On a night where team toughness was front and centre, the Sens earned the series split thanks to one of their tough guys.
Nick Foligno scored late in the third to tie the game and Chris Neil played the role of playoff overtime hero as the Ottawa Senators scored a gritty 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden.
The Sens and Rangers don't really have much of a history but after the events of last night, it's safe to say we are in for an epic playoff series.
The intrigue started early in this one when Head Coach Paul MacLean made a last minute change to his line up, inserting additional toughness in the form of Matt Carkner and Zenon Konopka. To make things even more interesting, both were in the starting line up along with Chris Neil, Zack Smith and Jared Cowen.
After a listless performance in the opener, you knew the Senators would do something to change the momentum and it didn't take long for Carkner to make his mark on this series. He targeted Brian Boyle after the Rangers tough guy took liberties with Karlsson in Game 1 and sent a strong message that the Senators will not be pushed around.
From that moment on, you could just tell the Sens had an added swagger, showing just how valuable a guy like Matt Carkner really is to this team.
Plenty to watch for today has both Carl Hagelin and Matt Carkner will have disciplinary hearings. Hagelin clearly targeted the head of Sens Captain Daniel Alfredsson and should pay the price for it. Alfie left the game after the incident and his status for Game 3 is still unknown.
Carkner's hearing is scheduled for noon while Hagelin will meet with Sheriff Shanny at 1:30 PM.
- Paul MacLean has received a ton of praise this year for his ability to bring this team together and get them all pulling in the same direction. MacLean is a guy that understands how the game is played and he showed that last night. Have to love the decision to start five tough guys and send a strong message to start Game 2.
- Would love to hear where this game ranks in your all time favourite Sens moments. Watched this game at St. Louis on Elgin again and the place went absolutely bananas after Neil's winner. Sens Mile is alive and well!
wonder what phaneuf was sucking last night!!!
We need to show the team that we're 100% behind them.
If Alfie does miss the rest of the series I hope we go after their star players and take them out. Karma is gonna be a bitch and the Ranger's will get what's coming to them. Obviously the Sens will be smart enough to wait for a time when it won't hurt the team, if one of those times doesn't come, so be it we'll take the series win and pay them back next season.
If you missed it: hearing for Carkner (OTT) noon, Hagelin (NYR) 130...
Carkner punches Boyle (same size) who refuses to protect himself, and gets a hearing....
Shanny is a joke.
WE need Stone to come up because it is his type of goals that will beat Lundquist.
To be fair, Boyle was dishing out baby jabs. Carkner full out assaulted Boyle with haymakers. Still, that's what you get when you bring a knife to a gunfight.
Another concussion at this stage of his career could be the last straw. During his last concussion he stated how disturbing it was not even being able to play with his kids without getting dizzy and a headache. I would have to think that if he gets that feeling again it would be reason to call it quits.
The last thing I want to see is that being the way he goes out after such an amazing career.
Please be ok....
Well Boyle kept his gloves on and it more of an aggressive face wash than punching.
Not saying Boyle shouldn't have gotten at least a double minor with Karlsson not getting "roughing" for being a victim, but a hearing and fine or even a 1-game suspension for Carkner is not really unfair.
And IMO Stone isn't ready to do anything Foligno, Neil, Greening etc can't do.
Imagine
Michalek-Spezz-Stone
Silfverburg-Turris-Alfie
Greening-Foligno-Smith
Condra-Winchester-Neil
THose are 4 crazy lines + all our other depth.
SENS can do some serious damage. Not scared of anybody in the EAST! LETS do it BOYS!
As with Hax, I was pissed we didn't come away with a PP over the first incident but I thought Carkner got exactly what he deserved from the officials last night and if he get's a game I won't be that upset.
I know why the "3rd man in" rule is there but I still don't think throwing Dubinsky out of the game was the warranted - but after all the refereeing howlers the Sens have had to deal with this season, I'll take it.
13:00
thanks
you can watch it here
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/sport/ice-hockey.html
Yeah Dooboo getting tossed was a bit of a bonus. I assume he was throwing some cheap shots in the scrum as well or maybe mouthing off to the officials - but yeah, I'll take it.
His 10-year-old-gir l tantrum was classic as well.
Regardless if Carks gets some kind of penalty today, he was the man yesterday. I totally support his actions.
Awesome game last night. Let's keep'er going for the rest of the series!
Go Sens go!
We should re-sign Carkner and target Willie Mitchell
And if Shane Doan is available we have to get him.
If we sign a defenseman to replace Kuba and Murray/MacLean decide one of the Bingo guys is ready to replace Gilroy, I'd totally support Carks as a 6th/7th guy.
And Shane Doan is 35 - no thanks. If we were fully rebuilt then fine but it's way too early for some grizzled veteran signing.
Of course I can acknowledge their is a difference as long as the league will acknowledge there is a difference between carkner/boyle fighting and boyle/karlsson fighting.
Hee Hee - a full Gatorade pail is heavy - I was impressed.
I liked the skate stomp when they told him he was ejected.
"No! NO it's not fair!!!!"
They need the leadership Phaneuf does not have.
Depends on the price tag. He's making $4.5M this year and other teams will offer him more than that. (i.e. Quebec)
Spend that money on Karlsson and young UFAs that will be around when we're a cup contender.
I love Doan and all, but he's not what we need right now.
Yes he is a great leader... No he isn't going anywhere...
Next topic...
after what they did to alfie its only fair for frankie to runover lundquist then punch out scott.
;-P
Murrays biggest problem this summer maybe turnning down agents from UFA's calling him wanting to be a Sen
Hows that for optimistic.
his thumb...
Love it!!
What with them picking Ottawa to finish dead last at the beginning of the season, and now their picks going down in flames, maybe they should re-evaluate their carrer choices and stop calling themselves experts.
If Alfie can't play, who gets inserted in the line up ?
Do you take a chance on a kid like Stone or do you simply put in Bobby Butt in there ? I've lost all confidence in Bobby Butt this year.
You are to polite.
With all due respect, I have to disagree with you.
I had a class this week where an expert on concussions came and spoke and that's the danger about concussions, just because you don't see blood or a broken bone doesn't mean the player is alright, that's why they're called an invisible injury.
Alfie does possess some insane 'swedish fountain of youth' type liquid somewhere in his house that he uses for injuries but head injuries are such a different beast. Just ask Crosby or Lindros how difficult they are to recover from...
I do sincerely hope it was just a precautionary measure not to put him back in the game.
PS fuck tortorella for saying he ducked, that was clearly an intentional shot to the head.
The problem with Iggy is he is not an UFA and would take a pick plus player plus prospect which we should not do.Iggy has a no trade but I think he would waive especially to come to another canadian team but I wouldnt want to pay that much for him.
we should let our youngsters develop and add 1 ot two UFA's that don't cost us anything but cash.
CONSIDER IT DONE!! Thats awesome!
If you think Konopka is coming out of the lineup after his game last night you truly know noting about the game.
Don't forget a "Healy sucks" chant as well.
I have Elliott in my pool and I want to know why I didn't get 2 points, let alone 5 points for a shutout win!?!?! I know Halak started the game but Elliott played double the minutes and made double the saves to preserve the shutout! I think that rule should be changed for backups coming into a game. If they make more saves and play more minutes, it shouldn't matter if your team was leading when you entered the game....weird rule!
"Wa-Water Sucks...It Really Really Suck... WA-WATER SUCKS...IT REALLY REALLY SUCK!!! GAAAAAAAAAATTTT OOORAAAADEEE!!! !" That would be the best chant EVER!!!!
Surprisingly, Healy actually was very pro Ottawa last night. He gave high praise to Karlsson for his defensive awareness and how impressive his minutes were despite only playing 1:30 minutes of the first 10 minutes of the game. I think he did some twitter reading last night and realized he had to tone down his obvious favouritism.
It's funny since Torts played the coach in Waterboy didn't he?
If Alfie can't go then Konopka stays in I'm sure with maybe Klinkhammer coming in. But if Alfie can go then I wouldn't be surprised to see Konopka cycle back out to keep a fresh guy or two in every game.
Lmfao torts as the fonz....
Phillips hit was high but was more of a crash into the boards hit where he wasn't responsible enough to stay down. He did leave his feet but not with dirty intent.
Hags went forearm first into Alfie's head.
I think instead of Torts asking the league why there's no hearing for Phillips, the league should ask Torts if he was upset enough over the Phillips hit to instruct his players to target our captain? i.e. premeditated intent to injure our captain with a dirty hit to the head?
I have Halak so I'm fine with it.
Jim O'Brien & Carkner/Gilroy only "regulars" taking option to skate...
1. When a hit to the head occurs the player has to go back in the dark room for 15 minutes then pass the concussion tests. I think he failed them and he was pulled out of the game.
2. It snapped Alfie's head a bit, so it could be a stiff neck possibly. So give him a shot in the neck of Cortisone (I think that is what it is) and he will be good to go for game
He never went to the hospital last night so it has to be one of these 2 reasons.
As much of a tough badass as Alfie is, I think that even if he passed the concussion tests (given his history and the fact that it was a clear blow to the head) any doctor would probably hold him out of the game.
Maybe that's just me being hopeful that he's okay and can play Monday though.
2. Matt Carkner on Boyle was not even close to the Boyle on Karlsson thing. However, I absolutely love it. I think in the regular season that's a 2 game suspension. I can see Shannahan cnosidering the misconduct the same as a 1 game suspension and taking that into consideration. Then again, this is the Sens....
3. The Crosby bashing needs to stop. He is not a whiner. Get over yourselves. Anyone that thinks that is blind. See that letter on his chest? That means he is SUPPOSED to constantly be talking to the refs. Yes, he is passionate. But he is also the best player in the world. Anytime there is a stoppage in play, who is the first player the camera pans to? He's under such a microscope you see everything that is going on.
4. Hagelin's hit is an obvious suspension. It is the exact play Shannahan supposedly wants to get out of the game. But, it is against Alfredsson. So factoring that in....all bets are off.
5. Phillips hit was a head shot. It wasn't a direct and obvious elbow to the head, but it was still a head shot. In the regular season, its a suspension for a game or two. Hagelin's would be more along the lines of a 4 or 5. So adjust for playoffs.
Could it have gone any better so far?
The Rangers were more physical and aggressive in game 1 and they won.
Ottawa responded in game 2 and forced OT and eventually won on a dirty, playoff style goal.
Alfie got knocked out and the team had to rally without him - which they did.
Karlsson is getting treated like a punching bag out there and being forced to create in different ways - which he's been able to do.
Win or lose this series just playing in it has accelerated the rebuild significantly.
My antivirus detected a Trojan when I tried to play it.
There's a difference between talking to the refs as a captain or alternate and continually whining to the refs whenever things don't go the way you want.
Crosby is a great leader and captain and definitely the best player in the world - but he DOES whine a lot.
Then again, so did Gretzky.
Alfie's head was leaning away from the player and his head was targeted.
calahan was leaning into the hit and his head was positioned to try and draw a penalty. That's the difference phillips didn't target the head.
And Carkner should get a medal for punching out one of he leagues biggest pussy's.
Can't see Alfie playing in game 3. They should call up Lassard just to fuck up Callahan.
Hax, they are both hits to the head no matter which way u look at it, Phillips had no intent of delivering a headshot, but he did.
Hagelin, carkner should be sudpended...Phi llips might get fined only...
since lines are being thrown out there and if Alfredsson is okay and hopefully no suspension on Carkner (ps it doesn't matter if its rabbit punches or haymakers a shots a shot.)
Foligno - Spezza - Alfredsson
Michalek - Turris - Neil
Greening - Winchester - Condra
Smith - Konopka - Carkner
Phillips - Cowen
Kuba - Karlsson
Gilroy - Gonchar
I rather double shift a physcial forward then lose a big body on the back end
You say yourself that Hagelin should be suspended and Phillips fined only (which I agree with) so how can you say they're the same?
I'm not saying they weren't similar and that the hits didn't end up being hits to the head - but the CBC talking heads were saying both hits were the same (i.e. same severity, same intent, same punishment etc).
Phillips was guilty of being reckless in his hit and getting too high - I'd have little problem with a fine and he did get called for elbowing. But Hagelin clearly ran Alfredsson and tried to hit him in the head. Not any kind of recklessness or mistake or lack of discipline - it was an assignment that Torts gave him, plain and simple.
Amazing how fast a year can go by! Back in ottawa! #beautifulcity
Let the armchair coaches set their lines with Stone now.
But he's clearly in town to be a black ace.
If you honestly think Callahan had his head positioned that way to draw a penalty you are insane. Phillips hit him in the head - and ONLY the head. It is a dangerous play that the NHL wants to get out of the game. Was it as bad as the Hagelin head shot on Alfie? No. Not at all. Hagelin's was obvious and fairly intentional. Phillips was one of those fast plays that happen in a game. BUT - it is still a check directly to the head.
I directly said that Hagelin's was much worse. I did not say that they are the same. So in that respect, you are putting words in my mouth.
"Silfver now has 11 playoff goals. That's one away from the SEL record. Who's got it? Daniel Alfredsson, of course, from 04-05. #Sens"
Ah, the future is bright with Silfer :)
LOL - you don't think Carkner wasn't dressed ENTIRELY to take care of Boyle? Cheap shot/mug? No, but certainly was there to send a message. He jumped off when Boyle did and back on when Boyle did.
What's more is that Torts knew that was coming and clearly told Boyle not to drop his own gloves. I'm sure Torts figured he'd be up 2-0 or 3-0 after 5 full minutes on the PP.
And Hagelin might not have been told to literally concuss Alfie but he (or the team in general) was most certainly told to run our captain.
I heard people say we could have Silverberg by the end of the weekend was just wondering what's going on.
Also great game last night, This has to be my favorite Sens team ever the old Sens would of went down by 1 and completely fell apart and lost, The new sens can play with or without the lead and battle back from just about anything very impressive indeed!
Why do such a high percentage of Canadians want to crucify a good, young, Canadian hockey player, the best in the world - hands down, and the guy that scored the winning goal for an Olympic Gold Medal.
I will be the first to admit that Crosby was a whiner, as advertised, during his first year to year and a half. He is emotional, he is competitive, he is emphatic, he is exactly the player I want wearing the C for Canada for the next 3 olympics. The guy eat, breathes and sleeps hockey.
And as far as his 'whining' goes...I would love to hear the video tapes all these fans have of his in-game conversations with the refs. If someone's got them...share them. Because as it stands, we have no idea what he is saying or not saying.
If Brynas wins this game they sweep and win the SEL Championship, which could possible mean we could have Jakob for game 4 on Wednesday. It would be a stretch to expect him for tomorrow, but hey, who knows?
I'm dying to see this guy play.
They're up 3-0 in the seven game final. So if they hold on to win today then the season is over and Silfverberg should be headed here.
As for Crosby - I hate him because he's an opponent. He doesn't play for the Senators so I hate him. If he played in the West I could be neutral for the most part, but he's in our way.
When he plays for Team Canada I'm 100% behind him.
And yeah, you don't really need to hear the words to know he's whining - look at his face.
LOL - someone needs to read "how to be a fan of sports"
Mac: Alfie feeling good today - he will be re-evaluated tomorrow. No word if he will practice on Monday. #Sens
And the beauty is that he will be ready for the intensity as he is coming after four playoff rounds and he should hit the ground running. I really hope he makes it for Wednesday, and until then I hope Klinkhammer draws in if Alfie can't go tomorrow night.
Sens dressed skill and speed... the Rangers played physical -- which is okay.. but went over the line with Boyle.
Ranger fans are whining that Boyle is not a fighter... then don't act like a goon on the MVP defenseman of your opponent and disrespect that player with multiple punches to the head and face. You do that.. be prepared to pay for your actions... if you don't... you're yellow.
If Tortellina thinks Alfie ducked.. he needs glasses. If he thinks Phillips should be suspended then so should the NY player (either Del Zotto or Staal -- don't remember which) did that brutal crosscheck to Turris on the Foligno goal. We don't know how Turris is... but I'm sure he's pretty sore today.
If the Rangers thought they would just run over and cheapshot the Sens through this series... then they are just plain dumb.
To Mr. Glenn Healey... were good earplugs on Monday.. you are going to hear it from us.. we don't like you.
To Mr. Bruce Boudreau -- who said on HNIC yesterday afternoon after hearing Spezza's interview.. that it sounded like the Sens were just trying to wish themselves a win... when actually they were going to lose game 2 worse than they lost game 1. Well Mr. Boudreau... go suck a lemon... or better yet... take a long walk off a short pier... but better wear a life jacket... you will sink pretty fast... you fat SOB.
Hope Carkner isnt suspended
Pretty much agree. Konopka was signed to win draws and add grit which he absolutely did last night.
However, Winchester is at 61% for the series and Spezza 52%.
So MacLean can sit Konopka in favor of Klinkhammer or Daugavins if he feels he needs to. Especially at home where he's got last change.
But yeah, I'm sure MacLean would like to dress Konopka for game 3.
Bring it. He is a pylon and will be easier for our boys to skate around. He will have Konopka to deal with if he gets out of hand and there is still Neil and the rest of the Sens toughness.
From what I read... he can't fight either... If they are going to play real dirty to take out Sens star players... expect the same in return...
This is priceless..... just absolutely priceless -- look at the fans in the background.
https://p.twimg.com/AqidU6aCAAEOZ4z.jpg:large
Fat floats.
I know we're not used to this as Sens fans, but our team has plenty of toughness. It's not like in the old days where it was Neil or nothing. Or having to dress McGrattan.
We have guys that play tough but don't typically fight (MM9, Phillips, Greening etc) and then guys that will happily drop the gloves if there's a need (Smith, Konopka, Foligno etc).
If torts thinks he's going to win this series by "out-toughing" us - I'm thrilled since that will not work.
Not sure what these comments mean for Silfverburg though.
Did stone skate today? And just to bash the leafs

Who cares what they say...let them bitch on the boards...let the team beat them on the ice. No point looking juvenile.
What is the deal with Boudreau on CBC? I can't believe the ass kissing that is going on. Hrudey and Stock agree with everything he says and seem to be in awe of him.
That guy is useless and will spend more time in the box than on the ice. Look forward to our boys getting more power plays.
dumb.
I hope Maclean dresses Carkner & Konopka again tomorrow night & he should also dress Klinkhammer & Dzuirzynski instead of Condra & O'Brien who haven't done much & were both benched in the 3rd period yesterday. Butler should replace Alfredsson if he can't go.
It just always seems that the NHL, the refs & all of the commentators are always against our team. I guess they are still mad that Hamilton didn't get a team & that Toronto is out of the playoffs again for the 7th yr in a row.
Bring on game 3 boys!!!!!
Hagelin says he texted Alfredsson to apologize for the hit. Says he tilted own head back to avoid Alfredsson's stick and got own elbow up
If this is true nice to see him show some class and apologize.
thoughts?
Fn auto correct sorry meant brynas game lol
I still have it on the PVR...will watch to see if it seems legit
Bullshit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhjhBMGYEng and here is a good video on youtube...I also didn't realize Anderson flew out like that
Go SENS Go!
P.s. Playoffs now are way better than failing for Nail!
"Rangers did speak during game 1 intermission they plan to take players out Spezza being one of them..."
Pens & Flyers picking up nastys...
@WeAreSensFans -- God Bless America goes back to the days of the Broad Street Bullies. Kate Smith used to sing it at times and whenever she did Flyers were winning.. she was their good luck charm.. so to speak. They just keep up that tradition every playoffs now. I really like Lyndon Slewidge.. but you can't beat Lauren Hart in Philly along with Kate Smith doing that song... it's really good.
Best I have so far
http://www.firstrowsports.eu/watch/119257/1/watch-philadelphia-flyers-vs-pittsburgh-penguins.html
Yeah and at the same time Letang fights Timmonen and both were given 5, 10 & a game. So Pitts down by 2 goals and they lose their best D.
Then Braydon Schenn does a clean hard hit on Martin of the Pens, I believe.. then Asham comes in and crosschecks Schenn in the throat... this game is getting real nasty... I guess the Flyers are tougher at home than on the road.
I have a feeling Alfie is going to play anyway.
Really could have used him here for Game 4 as I suspect Alfie is done
That would be epic and maybe send those fucktards a message.
Make it loud so they can't ignore it
They'll just make it as though we are still hung up on Heatley and chanting Heatley sucks.
Or they'll edit it out somehow. :)
En route to Ottawa with Mama Boro driving my truck #thinkijustlostmymancard
anyone see this, is there anything to it, must mean they know carks suspension, unless hes just coming to ottawa for fun lol
Pushing the glove away was BS.
He does all the horrible little things that piss people off but cries foul as soon as anybody touches him. The period is a magnification of the episodes between him and Foligno.
Just in this period he has:
punched somebody in the back of the head during a scrum when the opposing player was being held by an official
slashed at the opposition goalie's glove even though the puck was covered
flicked away a players glove that was on the ice as Voracek went to pick it up
during a "fight" with Giroux, deliberatley pulled him to the ice and then punched him when he was on the ice
most people are going to say that it's playoff hockey and it's intensity and everybody does it - and i agree with most of that - what pisses people off is the Crosby holier than thou act. He comes across as wanting one rule for him and one for everyone else, and that doesn't fly.
I still think he's the best player in the game and I love watching him play but I would love to watch him getting absolutely crushed every once in a while, unfortunately he's good enough to avoid it most of the time.
Said what I wanted too lol
pretty sure he lives in ottawa
Part of the group of "Black Aces". There will be a handful of guys coming from Bingo. Has nothing to do with a Carkner suspension.
Do we know who else is coming up Chirp? Is it posted anywhere?
Not yet. Sounded like there were still some issues to sort out but I would assume we'll know the names by tomorrow. Boro, Gryba, Wiercioch, Stone,Da Costa all likely candidates though.
If Alfie is out for game 3, then I hope the SENS call up and give Mark Parrish a chance.
He's a RW with 700+ NHL games, 7 +20 goal seasons, a powerplay specialist and playing for the ISLES in the past knows all about the RANGERS. I know with the rebuild there was no point on using him. But this is the playoffs and experience goes a long way. Look at guys like Recchi and what they have brought to the table. With guys like Condra and O'Brien only getting 7-8 minutes he could easily take their place. Also being the captain in BINGO, his leadership could come in handy.nv79d
The line-up could look like this
Michalek-Spezza-Parrish
Foligno-Turris-Greening
Winchester-Smith-Neil
Konopka-O'brien-Condra
Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Carkner
Cowen- Gonchar
Edit: phi vs pit series
lehner,dacosta,borocop,peterson,zibanejad,gryba,wiercroitch,hoffman,dzuirzynski
sorry spelling errors, copy/paste and corrections suck on a tablet.
fleurry is going to have the worst playoff gaa average this year!
Both Flyers and Penguins depend on offence too much, and both teams suck at defence. As of right now, it looks like the penguins is the worse of the two. The Flyers beating the penguins does not really mean that they are playing amazing, it's just the Penguins are sucking in both goal and defence.
HAHA, HILARIOUS! He does kinda look like The Fonz!
People are mad at Crosby, for face washing Giroux in a scrum, punching a guy (if you can really call it that) and for sliding a guy's glove away from him after a large scrum.
Yet the collective sentiment of this entire board was that the Matt Carkner play last night - where our player literally attacked, sucker punched and then continued to beat the guy while he was on the ice - was great?
Don't get me wrong, I loved what Carkner did. He took it a bit too far, but message sent. But if you think what Crosby has done in this game is 'dirty' or 'gutless' or 'classless' then how can you support the actions of Carkner.
This is not even worth commenting on it is so far off base.
lol
Adams is a bitch...Crosby is a coward. I hope the whole damn team gets what is coming.
Only guys I like is Neal and Malkin. Malkin doesn't seem to get involved in nearly as much BS as Crosby...and Neal will at least fight his own fights to a degree.
(since 86-87 - when all series went to best of 7)
I think the thing with Crosby is after his second concussion he said head shots don't belong in the game. That he will not be going into scrums at all as that's where some injuries can occur.
Then you see him with Foligno.. when Crosby throws the 1st elbow. You saw him today with his little tricks and behind the back stuff.
It appears he is being hypocritical (sp?) and I don't think some people like that.
The Pens are trying to be dirty rather than playing their game.. but give Philly credit.. they are doing a good job of getting to Crosby & Malkin. Courturier is having a great playoffs.. but he plays with some really good players. The young players on the Flyers are really coming to play this series... we shall see if it continues.
Damn those Pens are killing my hockey pools.
GO SENS GO!
He does. He just doesn't have a "CrosbyCam" following him all the time.
BS Malkin is as big a star as Crosby. They are probably in the top 3 in the league for star factor/recogniz ed on the street etc.
He just isn't a bitch
If I were to label either Pens stars as being a 'bitch' I would say Malkin before Crosby. Malkin takes absolutely stupid harmful penalties at inopportune times. Crosby on the other hand usually gets into the type of shit that he did today to try to spark his team. If you see Crosby doing that while sitting on the Pens bench, you feel like an idiot. Especially the 3rd and 4th line guys. Malkin is the type of player that will spear someone for a hit that they made earlier.
People are criticizing Crosby today for a lot of things. Some of it warranted - absolutely. But the play where he taps the players glove away from him - get over yourselves. If that was Daniel Alfredsson we would say it was genius and hilarious. Just a little bit of gamesmanship. And if we wanna get really into this - Alfie has been known to do some not so great things when his team is down - taking a slap shot at Scott Neidermayer after the final horn?
Honestly when he came back I gave him a clean slate...and tried to like him...needless to say didn't happen
People are mad at Crosby, for face washing Giroux in a scrum, punching a guy (if you can really call it that) and for sliding a guy's glove away from him after a large scrum.
Yet the collective sentiment of this entire board was that the Matt Carkner play last night - where our player literally attacked, sucker punched and then continued to beat the guy while he was on the ice - was great?
quote]
It's not so much that he does it, it's the fact that he complains like crazy when stuff that happens to every single player out there happens to him.
I think Crosby is to be applauded for virtually everything he does as an ambassador off the ice and the way he handles the intense scrutiny placed on him, I'm simply pointing out that he gives people plenty of ammunition to dislike him.
And to use your glove example, I agree it's hilarious - i never said it wasn't, I said it was the sort of thing that Crosby does that pisses people off.
I just think it's very easy to pull that sort of crap when you know you are never going to really have to answer for it.

I love our Captain. I believe he is one of, if not the best, leader in the game right now. I think he is a hall of fame first ballot guarantee. I think he deserves infinitely more recognition by the media (outside Ottawa) and league than he gets.
But hockey is an emotional game. Smart players do dumb shit in the heat of the moment. And I have noticed over the past couple of years that a major percentage of the posters on this board are so pro-Sens that they can't see anything else. If we judged Alfie as harshly as we are judging Crosby right now, would he really stand up to our lofty ideals about him? There is a reason why he gets booed every time he touches the puck in Toronto. But we LOVE him for that stuff.
Point being - shit happens. This little shit is a constant part of the game by every player on the ice. Is anyone yelling about Legwand today grabbing a hold of Franzen from the bench? None of you are complaining about him spearing Legwand on the play in the groin/mid section right after it either....that spear was MUCH worse than anything Crosby did in Game 3.
shanny explains haglin suspension
more than i expected
Just stop. You're seriously comparing Crosby and Alfie in terms of class? Crosby is the best player in the league but flat out he's a big time whiner. Maybe you should take his balls out of your mouth and just accept that it's true. I've seen many live games vs. the Pens and he complains more aggressively to the officials than almost any player in the league. That doesn't mean other players don't also complain but Crosby absolutely has earned the reputation he has. It has nothing to do with a "spotlight" on Crosby. He really just is that much of a whiner. Accept it, move on.
If I remember a couple of year ago Alfie at the end of a period shot the puck on Niedermayer.
And there's also the Sundin stick throwing imitation.
For us Lapierre, Crosby and Boyle are all a bunch of classless player.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and I must say Neil and Carkner where prety cute yesterday :)
3 games is good, was expected. Carkner decision to come soon.
YOUR NHL TEAM IS AN AMATUER GOLF TEAM!
thats it game over go watch golf, let the big boys play playoff hockey and go whine to somebody that may like you.
I'm surprised a ruling on Hagelin came down before Carkner. I would think they both would receive suspensions.... .I'll be shocked if Carkner doesn't. Then again it might be seen as an act that Shanny only sees as worthy of 1 game and since Carkner got kicked out at the star of game 2, he might sentence him to time served with a fine. Not likely....but might happen.
I appreciate and understand what Carkner was doing/intent, but his actions warrant discipline. Whether he plays again in this series or not, he gave the Sens a rallying moment that will carry over.
Sundin said that same thing, he came out and said afterwards that he thought it was funny and had a laugh with Alfie about it
Thats the point I was laughing real hard when alfie did it and I had no problem with the shot on Nieder.
I also did not like what Boyle did on Karlsson but its part of the game and I'm real happy about the beating he got from Carkner yesterday and a bit sad Neil did not connect more on the small fight they had.
For me, that's a far more honest and better reaction than it could have been, so props to him for that.
That doesn't change the fact that it's these little shitty things that drive opposition fans insane, especially when you give the appearance that you expect preferential treatment or are hypocritical about it.
Ok enough with these low scoring Philly vs Pittsburgh games #crazy
I agree in theory...but the two incidents aren't even close to the same. Similar yes...the same absolutely not.
Quoting The Apostle:
Saw it too...He comes across as a pompous spoiled little brat.
Yes, because I choose to defend the hands down best player in the world, for doing things that every player in the NHL does, I have his balls in my mouth. I've also noticed a trend that when people on here have no real argument they are reduced to making comments like this.
Do I believe Crosby is as classy as Alfredsson? No. I'm trying to make a point. We complain about so many players and specific plays that happen on a daily basis but we don't even question most of the actions of any Sens player. Lets face it here guys...most people on this blog completely turn their heads to anything a Sens player does even if its just as vicious or classless of the actions of a non-Sens player that we bash insistently.
I'm not defending boyle but if u can't see the diff netween the two, u need thicker glasses... boyle didn't drop his gloves vs karlsson, carkner completely cold cocked boyle in te jaw twice before punching him on the ice. To say the both are the same is clearly uneducated and uninformed.
That sux!
Expected and warranted, now let's move on and win game 3!!
I think its fair but was hoping the ejection from the game was going to be enough for Shanny.
the video is on Shanahan tweeter account
Hilarious
Boyle didn't drop his gloves, he gave karlsson a bunch of gloved jabs, could have done much worse, like imagine boyle doing what carkner did but on karlsson. We would be screaming for the death penalty...
Garrioch is saying game time decision (then again this is Garrioch)
If you are PM I guess you don't want the rangers to know if Alfie is going to be on the ice until the last moment.
In the first clip, the period is winding down. Alfredsson isn't the first nor the last player to try a slapshot from approximately center ice at the opposing team's goalie in a desperate attempt to achieve a fluke goal in the dying seconds of a period/game. You can see Niedermeyer move into Alfredsson's lane during his slapshot windup no less, so that's hardly targeting him. I think you're buying into the American commentators sensationalizat ion of the situation.
In the second clip, the hit (more like a push) is actually from the side, and not from behind like Bob Cole is making it out to be either. It's the same type of intense play you see when two people go for a loose puck near or along the boards. Tucker had a known history, as Eliotte Friedman points out in the later stages of the clip, of diving and embellishing for the sake of trying to draw a penalty. So again, while it is unfortunate that Tucker got hurt, the intent is not there.
Anyways, the reason I believe that Crosby has been branded the way he has is based on his words after coming back from his concussion about staying away from scrums and his actions early in his career whereby he would argue with the referees after everytime he got knocked down.
P.S. The reason Alfredsson gets booed in Toronto has to do with the mock stick throwing, that made fun of Sundin's incident where he launched a piece of his broken stick into the stands in frustration. It was simply intended as a joke between two fellow compatriots, which Leafs fans to this day can't seem to comprehend.
Gloved jabs can be just as damaging -- see boxing.
Glad to see Hagelin gone for 3 though.
Sure can, in a 12 round fight...:P
they are also very wide and have a large diameter that makes the impact more severe, i would think broken noses and jaws would be more frequent if players were allowed to keep their gloves on.
thats why there a rule saying you must drop your gloves to fight.
MacLean has characterized it as Alfie's decision if he plays or not. So assuming that's not gamesmanship, it looks promising. No way it's Alfie's call if it's actually a concussion.
Wasn't it a couple of weeks ago.. that Tortorella had that rant about the lack of respect in the NHL and that cost him $20,000.
So he condones what Boyle did. Condones what Hagelin did...
And while nothing was said about the brutal crosscheck on Turris.. I assume he would condone that to... But Phillips hit was worse than Hagelin's...
Now who is the hypocrite...
Sucks to have Carkner out.. but remember he only played about 2 min last night.. so essentially he got a 2 game suspension..
Watching "alfie" related videos on youtube, don't pay attention to the altercation.
Just look at Karlsson and Gonchar standing next to each other from 0:14 on, it's like somehow they knew someday they would be together
I realize the reason why Alfie is booed in Toronto.
And in the first clip there is absolutely no debate that Alfie deliberately shot the puck at Neidermayer. He looks up, turns away from the net and shoots the net at the oncoming player.
The second clip, for sure Tucker tries to draw a penalty, but it is still a hit on the numbers. Not exactly a clean play by Alfredsson there.
But I really am not trying to get into a debate on the merits of Alfie. I think he is great, I am more trying to make a point that we completely rationalize any questionable play by a Sens player while being outraged by similar plays by a member of a rival team.
In other news, I think the suspensions that were handed down to both Hagelin and Carkner are both just and reasonable. Considering the 'playoff inflation' that suspensions have, the 3 Hagelin got would have been a 5-6 gamer during the regular season. I would have been happy with that. And the single game from Carkner is well deserved. Like others have said. If he just threw the first couple punches before Boyle fell he wouldn't have even been tossed.
I think the punishment fits both crimes and now that they have been handed out, we can go back to playing hockey. I'm looking for a strong game from Spezza. He is the next Captain of this team, whether some people like it or not, and he needs to show it in game 3. I want to see him get mad, like in the Winnapeg game. It seems like when he gets mad he usually does something special.
Sedin sisters
2girls no cup
I already told you, go watch golf.
Gladly. But I will also be screaming at the TV at the hockey game with the best of them, wearing my Alfie jersey with pride. The funny thing is, I'm not really saying anything negative towards anyone on this site or any NHL player. I merely have a differing opinion and am more than happy to have an intelligent conversation about my views and opinions.
Instead you decide to dismiss this opinion with comments like that one. Why not either debate something like a man, agree to disagree or just stop responding? Your attempts to be funny (go watch golf? Classic) are neither constructive nor relevant to the conversation.
Just a word of advice, as a fellow SC follower... Don't bother man.
While there are a ton of educated, well informed, hockey fans, that number is outweighed by the number of Sens fans. Fans that only know Sens-hockey. Anything and everything Ottawa Senators... in other words, homers or stans (having a passionate fanbase is great). Those are the fans that are obviously biased and very rarely present an objective view or opinion. Anyone who shares an objective, negative or pessimistic view get shunned a.k.a Tookie.
I'd say just enjoy the game, but if you're seriously trying to engage in hockey discussion, go somewhere with less trolls/stans/ho mers because you won't get it here.
shutout!
I just find it frustrating. I am not a pessimistic fan. I don't even claim to be a realist like the aforementioned Tookie. I believed that this team would shock a lot of people from the get go, but didn't think we would manage to actually make the playoffs...unti l about January.
I was a regular poster on here back in the good ol' days. Before it blew up and you had hundreds of people commenting on any given article without the slightest clue. Now I can't even make a post on here. It makes it very hard to visit the site on a multi-daily basis.
and if you don't like the site, fuck off
You started the day off raving about putting Stone into game 3 of an NHL series.
You then go on to suggest that he and Spezza will magically have some killer connection without ever have taken a shift together.
Then you suggest that we should target Willie Mitchell and Shane Doan as UFA's this summer.
You then peg Iginla as a bad idea (with sound reasoning) which someone else suggested for an off season pick up.
The next post suggests that we are winning the cup so we will not need to sign anyone. Then suggest we're going to have to beat off player agents begging us to sign their players.
Couple of contradictions. But you are definitely an 'informed fan' unlike that rascal Tookie.
I kinda remember that being his only talent
The guy has 3 shots on net in 2 playoff games..
To put that in perspective, Karlsson had 10 shots on net last game
Michalek had nearly 5 minutes of PP time and was 2nd among forwards in ice time last game and only registered 1 shot
can someone explain what I am missing?!?!
Why is he allowed to waste such quality ice time for one shot a game?!?!?!?!?
Dont get me started on greening who had ZERO shots on net all game
Glad to see a real gutsy playoff guy like Neiler get the game winner but it's too bad the guys fighting the hardest arent getting top ice time
GO SENS THAT HAVE THE GUTS TO SHOW UP
Alfredsson, who will be a "game day" decision on his possible return or not !
On the Carkner incident , he actually got suspended in
Game 2, and was also suspended for the next game, so he really was suspended for 2 games !
Hopefully, now that both teams got" tit for tat ", they
will focus on playing great up and down hockey, and abstain
from the vicious play, of trying to take each other out !!
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!
We really have to stop with all the hate, let's enjoy these playoffs everyone. If anyone should be angry it's the Canuck and Penguin fans. While I predicted LA to beat Van, I didn't think a 3-0 lead aw going to happen, I'm surprised they haven't already started tearing te city apart. As for Pitts, who thought they would end up facing elimination In game 4? I don't think anyone predicted that.
Reading the talk about Spezza, 9MM, Greening. Remember they are up against the Rangers top D, who are one of the best shot blocking crew in the league. You have to expect the numbers to be down, this is when the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines play the most important role. Now that Ottawa has the push you'll see more production, they are just getting started.
Here's to a great game tonight. Go Sens Go!!!
I also had a ham sandwich for lunch and walked the dog later in the afternoon.
Its creepy you being so infatuated with me.....
Haha classic... I share your sentiments Chris..
TheBoss hit the nail on the head too...
Your examples of Alfredsson's questionnable play are questionnable at best too. If you analyzed the clips more closely, you'd see that my description is actually accurate of both situations. In both cases, alternate camera angles would only further reinforce my point. If you want an actual example, look for the video of Alfredsson going apeshit on Brooks Orpik in the corner that someone posted above.
Keep your foot on it and don't take it off till its 4-1...
@ AllanR & ChrisT
There is no point in analyzing "questionable calls".
We want to see great up and down hockey!
See my previous post #243 and move on !!
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!
I'll be there chirpin' Boyle til I can't speak anymore!
Quick question for anyone who has heard anything...
What's the status of Ryan Mcdouagh? (sp) that slapper that he took of the inside of his leg, close to the trouser grapes, in OT that would eventually lead to Neil's goal looked like it hurt, maybe keep him out for game 3??
He'll probably play, but just a reminder that we/re not the only ones banged up!
I'm so jazzed up!!!
Go Sens G00000000000000 !!!!!!!!
I think the same thing...that being said the game following wild games are typically a let down in the raucous sorta way.
You'd think so, but after seeing yesterday's Pens-Flyers game, whoa it reminded me why I do love watching the playoffs. The intensity definitely grows over the course of a series... Could we be building a bitter rivalry with the Rangers? Maybe... I mean the "Battle of Ontario" is all but dead in my opinion... Hoping the game doesn't get too wild though.
Agreed on all counts. I have watched almost every game so far, its nuts...Still have the Sens battle on the PVR can't bring myself to delete it.
Kinda funny I rewatched it yesterday and even though I knew the results still got pissed when NY scored in the first and still jumped and cheered when Neil scored in overtime...Haha ha I am a loser
Totally off topic(well maybe on in the sense of a good way to get pumped up) if anyone ever enjoyed rap google Tupac Choachellla. They got him on stage as a hologram and it is really well done.
Pretty sure that's the only time I've ever yelled out 'WHAT THE FK?'
Not gonna lie that hologram blew my mind... The complexity, the motion, hell the detail on him... Amazing.
On topic though, when Boyle scored, got me pretty riled. As they said though, he's been been putting points up in the last 10 games? We gotta cool him down, along with the rest of their top line.
As bad as it sounds, kind of glad Staal hasn't come into form yet either. I guess he must be suffering from the lingering effects of his concussion. He doesn't look as good as he should (but again I don't watch the Rangers often, and have only caught glimpses of Staal this year).
Daniel Alfredsson is on the ice for the morning skate. #BelieveIt
