SensChirp Gets the Call- Game Day Update

(UPDATE 8:10 AM)- Just about to head out to catch the morning skate scheduled for 10:15 AM. The message for me is simple, don't do or say anything stupid. Could be a challenge.  Will try to update the blog afterwards but be sure to keep an eye on @SensChirp on Twitter for updates throughout the morning.

After nearly three years of operating the SensChirp blog, not to mention a couple years on the Sportsnet message boards as Chara03 and JoseCuervo, SensChirp is finally getting the call.

Tomorrow, when the Ottawa Senators host the Boston Bruins, I will be looking on from the press box.  Yep that’s right, the little blog that could is finally getting an opportunity to mingle with the pros.  I only hope they're ok with me wearing a mask to hide my identity.

Included in this rare, behind the scenes glimpse of life in the media, will be access to the pregame skate and coach’s press conference, a cushy seat in the press box (although I’m entirely prepared/expecting to stand) and a chance to speak with the players after the game.

Now I realize that while this is a cool opportunity, by no means is it an indication that I’ll be crossing the line from blogger to media.  I know my role.  I’m not a journalist.  This is a fan site and it always will be.  But for a kid who grew wanting to write about the Ottawa Senators rather than play for the Ottawa Senators, this is a pretty special opportunity.

And for that, I have to say thanks to the Senators organization.  They are thinking outside the box by inviting bloggers in like this and I think it’s something fans of the organization really appreciate.

But the reality is this would not be happening if not for the loyalty and support of the readers on this site.  Through the ups and the downs, the scoops gone wrong and the overhauls to the website format, the readers have remained loyal.  The community we've developed has become one of the best places on the internet to talk Sens hockey and that is because of you, the reader. Thanks to all of you!

For updates, be sure to follow me on Twitter @SensChirp.  I’ll be updating the blog in the afternoon with the usual Game Day post.

  • With last night’s loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Sens will now finish in either seventh or eighth in the East.  That means they’ll be opening up the playoffs against the Rangers or Bruins, with Boston still the most likely first round opponent.
  • Thanks to everyone that joined in last night’s fan led Alfie tribute.  With each period the chant seemed to pick up steam and by the third period, fans really seemed to be getting the hang of it.  Here’s hoping it’s a tradition that continues on Thursday night against the Bruins.  That and a "Yes We Can" chant of course.
  • Sens are on the ice for practice at noon today. Will post updates at the bottom of the blog when they become available.

Congratulations Chirp! Definitely well deserved. You are an excellent writer and I love reading your blogs every day.

Make sure you don't forget your bird mask with a centurion helmet for Thursday to keep your identity hidden.

It might be a good idea as well to create another event and make sure you include the 'Yes We Can' chant as well. Otherwise I'm not sure it will continue/catch on like it did in last night's game.

Want to avoid overwhelming people with it. We'll see if it happens at the next game on it's own. Then for the playoffs, I'll create another event with some ideas for the first playoff home game.

Well earned Chirp,
really appreciate the insight you bring, and really hope you continue to work as a hockey fan, and not necessarily as the media.
But a congrats also to many of your devoted posters, who come on here and help you bring some excellent insight, and comments on our Sens.

Also want to note that the 11:11 chant was first noted here, and in short time it made it by game time, only shows the following that is growing on this site.

Well done Chirp, you should be proud of your accomplishments

Good on the organization for being "with the times" enough to realize the importance that the blogging community has on the team and fan base!

Can someone explain the "Yes we can" chant with respect to Thomas? I'm obviously missing something...

Earlier this year Thomas snubbed an invitation to be honoured at the White House with the Bruins, he's one of those Tea Party nuts who doesn't like the president's skin colour and tries to frame it under socialism.
What better to get under his skin than to chant Obama's 2008 campaign slogan (which also mirrors our underdog status)?

Those Aflie chants last night were horrible.

first, Alfie wasn't on the ice for any of them. So they died down quickly.

Second, what's with the countdown? why not just start chanting alfie? it seemed like everyone wasted their voices counting down and forgot to chant alfie after

third, why do we have that giant scoreboard if we arent going to use it? how hard would it be to flash the name 'alfie' on the bottom of the screen whenever you want to get a chant going? not very.

I like the idea, but it was poorly executed. I could have done better just by riding the bus to the game and telling everybody the plan.... I HAVE done better riding the bus and telling people the plan.

Although I wont say it was awful, I do agree on a few points here. No need for the 10 second countdown in my eyes. obviously the major benefit is by chanting for 10 seconds it cues everyone else in the building that oh ya its 11:11

Spontaneous alfie chants would be better suited at 11:11 instead of aforementioned countdown

I'm all for alfie chants, and I really think we've been stingy as fans this year and last. I guess fans have forgotten that he scores when we chant.

I just think an alfie chant when he's not on the ice, and the other team has the puck, peppering our goalie, is a bit stupid.

Would love to see one in the dying minutes of a game, down by one, on the powerplay, with alfie on the point... that would make sense.. but when he's sitting on the bench, and we cant keep it going for as long as the 10 second countdown? embarassing

I agree no need for Lucic to run our goalie right before our playoff series

Also gives Bishop some playing time in case he is needed in playoffs while coming back from injury

Don't be a dope ... I was at the game & participated in the chant ... and it was kinda cool to watch it grow each period ... we don't need the scoreboard to tell us when to cheer ... the whole point of this was that it was a grassroots outside the box idea. I applaud the effort, and hope the tradition grows.

Alright, my comment might have come off more seriously than I intended it. My bad. I have no proof Thomas's views are tied to racism, that was a stretch, but it's hard to believe about a goalie I respect that he's into the brand of Republicanism that believes Obama is a Muslim born in Kenya and consistently disrespects the President.

Well if we could clearly hear it on TV then it wasn't that bad (I agree it died out about 4 or 5 alfie's in though).. The whole point was to chant at 11 minutes, yeah there's a strong chance he's not going to be on the ice but that wasn't the point.

I just find it funny (I'm not directly pointing to you) that most people who have a problem with this are the same people who gripe every game how SBP is so boring...

Coming from the TV crowd, you could easily tell that the chant was catching on with every period.

It would be awesome if that continues FOREVER. Imagine bringing your kid 10 years from now and they ask "who's Alfie"?

Hell, they still chant "Potvin sucks" at MSG...

According to Chirp the dirty Bruins plan on resting several key players tomorrow versus the Sens.. what do you guys think the Sens should do?

My gut instinct is that this is like game 0.5 of the series. We want to show them we can beat them, we want to remind our team that we can beat them, get out there and relentlessly kick the shit out of them to set the tone for what surely will be a "war" of a series and likely a war of attrition will all the big bodied banging we will undoubtedly see. Also after a *very very* weak effort last night we need to get back to the grind work ethic and winning confidence. Do we really want to waddle into this series possibly losing our last three games to close out the season?

On the other hand, there is an obvious benefit to both sides to rest a couple of bumps and bruises before this jackhammer of a series likely starts. I think the past several games we have been honing our "playoff style" hockey a little bit, and I have no doubt that MacLean is cunning and probably has a good battle plan approach pieced together to match the Bruins. Do we really want to unveil that tomorrow or catch them by surprise Game 1 in their own barn, and never once stop to take our foot off their throats...

A "W" is always good, but if we can accomplish that by resting a key player or two, try to avoid any injuries tomorrow and hold our battle-plan cards close to our chest... then that is a good thing as well.

On a different note... I know the schedule won't be posted until next week, but can we expect something like:

Game 1: Tuesday, April 10: Ottawa @ Boston
Game 2: Thursday, April 12: Ottawa @ Boston
Game 3: Saturday, April 14: Boston @ Ottawa (HNIC)
Game 4: Monday, April 16: Boston @ Ottawa
Game 5: TBD - if required
Game 6: TBD - if required
Game 7: TBD - if required

The only thing on the Scotiabank schedule is:
April 13: Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall

And I expect CBC wants to have an Ottawa game and Vancouver game on HNIC.

How great will it be to have a home playoff game on a Saturday???

Or in Pittsburgh random "mario, mario" chants. I know I would laugh at them cause it would be funny

Anyways keep up with the chants while he is playing, no reason it can't be done while he is here, or everytime he makes an appearance when he retires.

Would be nice to make a few "andie, andie" chants in the playoffs, I'm sure with enough people and the noise be muffled we could say it was for alfie or andie and both players wouldn't know the difference 2 birds 1 stone

Chirp,

I don't know if you remember me sending in a suggestion, a while back, about a contest for all of the readers trying to predict next seasons opening day lineup - who sill still be here, who will be new to the team ,etc...?

While I hope you do move forward with it (after playoffs), you could always have a similar contest around who will be in the line-up for the first playoff game this year?

I know - given the number of readers, that you would have alot of entries that are the same, so you could always use first "first senator to score a goal in the playoffs" as a tie-breaker...

I think this would be interesting too. What do you think?

I know I have a dark-horse candidate for who will not be in the line-up, so I'm sure others have similar opinions...

"Never let yourself get between Bruce Garrioch and the buffet table"

Be careful up there, Chirp.

Coming from the TV crowd, you could easily tell that the chant was catching on with every period.

It would be awesome if that continues FOREVER. Imagine bringing your kid 10 years from now and they ask "who's Alfie"?

Hell, they still chant "Potvin sucks" at MSG...

Hell my 2 year old knows Alfie by face, its hilarious, Groom em young!

He can also name by face, Spezza, Karlsson and his favorite is Michalek, kinda creepy but awesome at the same time!

Oh and grats SC, punch Brennan for me if he's there...

The Ottawa-Bruins series will not start until next Thursday (April 12). Wednesday evening in Boston has the Celtics playing at home, so that day is unavailable.

Still have the Saturday HNIC game that I'm sure CBC wants, but it will be in Boston, not Ottawa...

@connor smyth I was at the game too and the chant was great in my opinion, especially considering it was the first friggin time. I dont know where you were sitting but I was way up in the nose bleeds and each period it got louder and louder. EAch time it took till about 8 in the countdown to get going but got louder and louder and the ALFIE chants lasted 20-30 seconds. Nothing wrong with that. For an SBP crowd, its as good as it gets. Seriously, your gripes sound more like sour grapes which is nothing more than sad.

While I recognize the ALFIE chant is a prompt too, it is nice to see a little grassroots noise vs only hearing the crowd when the noisemeter is on or when they show the goddamn Leafs score in the out of town scoreboard. I am so sick and tired of hearing the word "leafs" in SBP when they arent playing us. they are insignificant and not worthy of mention.

SBP has a lot of work to do in the noise department and last night was the best step in the right direction I have ever heard.

Edit - if/when during the playoffs we are down and the crowd is silent waiting for something to cheer for, we should all feel shame. cheers are meant for boosting a team as much as they are for celebrating a goal. you can hear crickets in that place when the Sens are losing or not playing well.

Yep I can't stand the Leafs suck thing.. Last night, that was the thing that i couldn't wrap my head around... My Leafs fan friend was getting quite the kick out of it though..

Why the hell are we talking about the Leafs when they are long gone and had nothing to do with that game?

I get that it adds atmosphere to the building, but let's cheer the Sens and not against the Leafs, it just makes Ottawa look like they have a bad inferiority complex..

I agree, that comment is pretty ignorant.

I dont think you even read Thomas's official statement did you? There is serious concern in the united states right now about the attacks on citizens freedoms through legislation. The snub came shortly after Obama signed the NDAA into law on new years eve. The NDAA allows the US military jurisdiction on US soil, declares US soil a "battle ground", allows indefinite detention of US citizens without due process merely on suspicion. I could go on with other examples but thats for another blog.

So no, Thomas's concerns have nothing to do with the color of Obama's skin and everything to do with the Fed gov't getting "too big and out of control" to loosley quote Thomas.

As much as i love the idea of getting on Thomas' nerves, i do not support the "yes we can" chant. Sorry, im with thomas on that one.

Enjoy the experience.

For those that are going to tomorrow's game.. don't forget this will be the last home game until game 3 of the playoffs. Make sure we send the team off with a big Go Sens Go at the end of the game.

If Lucic is playing tomorrow.. rest Karlsson -- provided Gonchar is playing. We know that Karlsson will be the prime targe for the Bruins. I think the Sens should just dump the puck in Chara's corner and hit him every chance they get. Eventually it will tire him out. Chara, Lucic, Marchand, Thornton & Krecji -- along with Thomas are keys players for Boston.

Practice shooting pucks on the net... to actually hit the net. Overwork Thomas...

I hope Sens don't draw Dan O'Rourke/Tim Peel for the playoffs... that would be there nightmare.

This a place I come to wind down a few times a day and WE appreciate the job youve done since the start. Im sure your going to ask the right questions when you get the chance and tell us peasants all about it. Enjoy the game tomorrow and i'm hoping they invite you again for the playoffs.

Not much to say about last nights game... The Neil goal would have changed the tide... unfortunately the war room in Toronto doesn't know what is and what isn't a goal (see Kane vs Ottawa last Monday). Too bad, because the refs can't call a clean devastating hit either. 1st Star should have been Neil. We need him to be a missile in the playoffs.

Just bought my Vintage Jersey for the playoffs to go with my OBAMA YES WE CAN, GO SENS GO posters.

I really don't see the need to sit out Karlsson. If anything he needs to see what the playoffs are going to be like and get ready for it.

There's really no risk of someone on the Bruins trying to legitimately injure Karlsson or anyone else - they're just not like that.

I'd rather see Karlsson play but have some sort of plan on how to deal with the forecheck and the attention he'll be getting. I don't want Game 1 to be a totally new experience for him.

If anyone on the team has a legitimate injury that needs a game off to get better that's different, but Karlsson himself said he plans to play the rest of the games saying "I'm young, I'm ready".

------------------------------------------------------

You don't think that one or all of Lucic, Marchand or Thornton would not take delight running Karlsson whenever they get the chance? Marchand likes to clip.. Lucic & Thornton could do damage to Karlsson just by their size alone... Sens going into the playoffs without Karlsson does a lot of damage to their offense... but I hope you are right...

Heard a bit of a comment the other day on the Team 1200 that the league may consider starting some playoff games @ 6:30 some @ 7:00 some @ 7:30 -- so fans can see a little of all the games... what do you think?

Well I'm not saying they won't try to bruise him up, I'm just saying you won't see a Slapshot-style attempt to injure as the league would react pretty severely I think. Karlsson's an all-star, young guy, small and possible Norris winner - he's not the type of guy they'd let a dirty hit go unpunished and it's not like mid-season where they can act like it was just a fluke.

But let's dress Carkner just in case ;)

As for 6:30 starts - I hope not personally. I have PIP and "last channel" that does me just fine thank you. Earlier starts would be hard to get home in time (for me anyway).

Don't be a dope ... I was at the game & participated in the chant ... and it was kinda cool to watch it grow each period ... we don't need the coreboard to tell us when to cheer ... the whole point of this was that it was a grassroots outside the box idea. I applaud the effort, and hope the tradition grows.

Ahmen! For an idea that grew steam for the most part on blogs, this is something that definately has the potential to pick up steam in future games. And it WILL. An Alfie chant...hard sell eh....not! Even the season ticket holders flipping through their IPhones and yawning during down times in a game will take notice and join in. I garuntee it will pick up more steam in the Boston game...especial ly when Alfie is on the ice (if it works out that way).

GSG!

The Sens organization won't touch the Obama/Thomas thing with a ten-foot pole. Doesn't mean fans can't though and I wouldn't be surprised if a few players make veiled references to it in interviews.

Mendes: Jason do you think your team can win one of the first two games of the series to steal home ice advantage?

Spezza: It will be tough since they're the defending champs and a great team, but can we do it? Yes we can.

I haven't been able to find a schedule but it seems they're headed to the finals. So I guess he could be available in as little as a week or as long as two weeks maybe?

Murray pretty much said last night that they'd rush him over as soon as they could be it seemed like they plan to have him and Zibanejad as black aces only.

Though I guess if we're having trouble scoring goals or if we have an injury then they might try to parachute him in - seems risky though.

There is a flip side to this coin. If Boston goons want to take a run at Karlsson Thursday night...why not let him play....with ofcourse the strict instructions of "forget the play, just duck these guys at the last second and let them suck on the boards with every failed hit."

Meh...could work. Just bait em a bit. Plus Karlsson can work on his timing for dodging bullets.

In all seriousness...b iggest hits happen when your players are trying to make a legitimate play. We toy with them a bit and maybe Marchand or Lucic blows out a shoulder or something when our players duck.

so silfver and rest of brynas beat the defending champs in 5 games yesterday. the other series between SAIK and AIK can end tomorrow SAIK leads it 3-2. hope it does end for 2 main reasons. a)it will bring silfver over here sooner and b) brynas have had a much easier time beating SAIK than AIK this season.

from what ive seen in comments today, we should expect playoffs to start here on the 12th. that means silfverberg can join us probably by game 3 or 4 depending on how quick his series goes.

oh yeah, congrats chirp!

so silfver and rest of brynas beat the defending champs in 5 games yesterday. the other series between SAIK and AIK can end tomorrow SAIK leads it 3-2. hope it does end for 2 main reasons. a)it will bring silfver over here sooner and b) brynas have had a much easier time beating SAIK than AIK this season.

from what ive seen in comments today, we should expect playoffs to start here on the 12th. that means silfverberg can join us probably by game 3 or 4 depending on how quick his series goes.

oh yeah, congrats chirp!

Thanks MD - I knew someone would have more specifics than me.

So unless the Sens are down 3-0 and desperate I doubt Silfverberg gets thrown in right away. But it will be nice to have him practicing with the team for a few days. Not only does it give MacLean an option if JS is learning the system quickly but it also keeps a bit of healthy pressure on the other forwards to work hard etc.

I still am doubtful he plays any playoff games as MacLean has preached system, system, system all year and I don't see him suddenly dropping in a rookie who hasn't played a single game in North America yet. But if there's an injury or two?? Or if he's practiced with the team for a bit first and someone is struggling???

agreed, and silfver with his talent and his 2way play just seems like someone that can quickly adapt. still no reason to rush him in, plus im not too sure if i want someone's first NHL experience be vs boston..in the playoffs.

slightly off topic about erik karlsson but a different erik karlsson. this karlsson is 17, playing for frolunda too! and he is a forward. really dont know too too much about this kid but he will be on next years WJC team in sweden. and seeing that his stats have been between 1.3-1.5 ppg since he was 16 playing in the j18 and j20 league. so his stats indicate he will be also a first rounder type not in this upcoming draft but the following draft

how awesome would that be, not too sure if they are related either.

you can see his stats right here: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=33395

Does anyone know how to vote on the nhl 13 cover? And can we vote for any player in the league? If so our all star voting was a success, we should al vote for Alfie as he is coming close to retirement he deserves to get on the cover!

Hey Chirp, if you see Neil or Foligno, tell them thanks for being such class acts.

There were a couple of little Jets fan next to me during the pregame skate in Winnipeg, and they both tossed pucks for the kids.

Those kids were so happy. It was awesome.

Then ask them why they didn't give me a puck... I was wearing my Sens jersey and everything. LOLOL

Has any player ever played an entire season in juniors, only to arrive in time for the playoffs to not have played a single game during the NHL regular season to play for the team that drafted him? If Silfverberg is arriving shortly, he will be completely unknown to all fans and analysts and to put him on the top line, is pretty gutsy. I hope Silfverberg - Spezza - Michalek completely tear apart the opposition ahead. Get 'er fuckin done boys.

not too sure about someone coming from junior but the closest example i can think of is markus kruger who finished his season in djurgraden and joined the hawks right at the end of the season for playoffs although i think he did play a few regular season games

They could also drop to 9th from last and way out of the lottery.

Go Leafs Go!!

30. (2) Columbus 61pts (clinched last overall)
29. (2) Edmonton 73
28. (3) Montreal 73
27. (2) Islanders 77
26. (2) Toronto 78
25. (2) Anaheim 78
24. (2) Minnesota 79
23. (2) Carolina 80
22. (3) Tampa Bay 81

I think toronto and anaheim are actually flipped right now, toronto has the tie breaker as they both have the same ROW and toronto won the only game vs the ducks this year and they have better goal differential :)

no thanks, hes pretty much petersson just 3 years older, physically weaker. we have enough of those in our system right now (da costa, pageau, petersson, filatov) not bashing on any of them really. i really like all of them, hell i was the one defending filatov since day 1 as much as i defended lee. just they gotta get stronger if they want to have similar production in the NHL as they do in their lower leagues.

A couple of questions that could be asked:

1. For Bryan Murray: Any updates with Karlsson Contract?
2. For Bryan Murray: Any College prospects still looking at to possibly sign?
3. For Paul Maclean: How he has like Jesse Winchester's game since being back
4. For Paul Maclean: Who will be the backup to Anderson in the playoffs? Auld (experience) or Bishop (guy playing good right now)?
5. For Daniel Alfredsson: What did you think about the fans cheering for you in the game against Carolina for you to play one more year?
6. For Any player/Coach/BM : What is it going to take to beat Boston in a series? Will your game plan be to get big guy infront of Thomas just like Chicago did with Byfuilin in the playoffs when Chicago won the cup. Who do you think will be that impact player that will do that?

just some good guide line questions that I think could be asked for the before/after the game. P.S. Record some audio from the press conference and post it on your site if you get any interviews that you are able to please

as a fan who's moved to Potsdam, Ny, have to admit I was a bit dissapointed in that Dave "the voice" Schreiber talked through the countdown and chant. Also that the chant was so short lived in the first . It only takes a few fans going strong to properly keep the chant going. To be honest I didn't even hear the second and third attempts. Here's hoping tonight us radio fans can hear what "should be" a great crowd that takes notice of the NHL or at least the commentators.

great news chirp can't wait for the new coverage!

Great idea on fans asking questions Chirp

1) to Gilroy "why are you so crap"?... Kidding :)

1)To Murray "with the rebuild going so well, and the this year already a success, what are the plans now for next year? Are we at the point of adding a UFA or two, to make us legit contenders next year?

2)To PM
"We have abviously had our troubles with Thomas, and to move on we will need to figure that out, what will be the secret to breaking that success he has had with us in the past?

"we will have to styme the Bruins forecheck on our D, to allow us to break out, any plans on how we can slow down their forecheck?

Condra " When the F are you going to score again? Again kidding, unlike most here I really do love his game, and I predict he gets off the shnide in the playoffs,

Enjoy Chirp, and make us Chirp followers proud!

Then again, maybe we should focus on getting the Alfie chants down first. One step at a time.

I'm not sure if this is official, but check out 5th result down "2012 Round 1 Playoff Ticket Pricing - Ottawa Senators - Tickets" in the google search result below

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=pricing+sens+playoff+tickets&oq=pricing+sens+playoff+tickets&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_l=hp.3...1312l10812l1l10906l42l41l5l1l1l1l1859l4731l32j2j8-1l35l0.frgbld.&psj=1&fp=1&biw=1033&bih=573&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&cad=b

You can see pricing in the description. There's also a preview picture if you click the ">>" next to the link. It's pretty blurred, but you can somewhat make out the pricing for each section. Unfortunately the link itself is broken, but maybe that simply because it hasn't been made official yet, or it's been removed due to being put up too early. Anyways take it for what it's worth; I know you're all probably as curious about the pricing as I am. It does seem believable though...

Whats the difference if they run him now or later?? he might aswell get used to it now.

People saying the outcome of the game doesnt matter are stupid, Boston aint sitting no one, they are coming out strong, try to impose on us their dominance and this WILL carry over to the playoffs.

Sens must show they can match the Bruins physically and mentally. Dont think for a second this game means nothing, the players sure think it means something. If we win, it gives the boys hope, if we lose, its just that much tougher to face them in the playoffs.

Dont use excuses for the team!

I think who ever has home ice advantage should be able to set their own game order. Like starting game one away then the next 4 at home, or whatever. Starting at home does not always seem to go too well....just a thought. Even more incentive to come in 1st.

Hello Know Nothing,

not sure if you heard but The Bruins ARE sitting Thomas, Chara, and Bergeron, so yes they are sitting their best players,

Hey don't know nothing, but this is only an important game as to setting the tone physically. The score really doesn't matter. Lucic will be running around trying to bruise up some of our players as Neil should be trying to do to them. Tonight is all about trying to intimidate the opposition.

That would be impossible logistically for selling tickets and scheduling TV coverage etc. Plus 4 in a row at home is a bit extreme. The higher ranked team is supposed to get an advantage but it's still supposed to be a "fair" series.

Though I suppose if they had 2 or 3 options max and just had to confirm which option they wanted the minute they clinched (or even in advance) I suppose it might work.

I prefer the start on the road model of 2 away, 2 home, 1 away, 2 home.

Liked the Alfie countdown and chant the other night - the one change I would make would be to add "One More Year" into the chant. Sort of 4 "Alfies" and then "One More Year" until the chant fades away. Also seemed a litttle odd as I don't think he was ever on the ice during the chant.

really liked the idea of the Alfie chant, and contrary to some posters, I was impressed that I had only heard about it that morning, and it made it by game time, so kudos to all involved.
The only thing that I noticede was that the countdown went well, but at zero, it seemed people were confused as to what to do next, so maybe if we can clarify what is next... Alfie, Alfie etc... for further chants we can always use that same 11:11 timeline, in honour to Alfie, but put in what our next chant may be... ie Beat Boston etc
what are your thoughts?

So you're saying that people seemed confused about what to chant and you're suggesting that we alternate chants?

Cuckoo, cuckoo!

Let's just focus on the Alfie chants for now.

Let me try this again, once the countdown went down to zero, some of the people did not know what the chant was supposed to be, ie Go Sens Go, or Alfie Alfie,
that is why it seemed to die down,

Totally agree but it did get a bit stronger each time as more and more people caught on. If we alternate chants nobody will be able to follow along.

I'm pretty sure I heard a few "Happy New Year"s in the first period of last game.

YEESH - so many frustrated choreographers.

Can't I just concentrate on watching the nuances of the game, cheer the great plays and boo the bad calls?

He He ... Happy new year... only in Ottawa,
agreed, but my point is that we start with this Alfie Alfie chant,
then we should continue the tradition of the countdown to always begin at 11:11 even if we change the chant to ie Bruins Suck or whatever, this way we can always honour Alife, and we can also change chants accordingly... just a thought

have you been to a regular game in Ottawa?
I've been to NAC performances that are louder.

This 11:11 Alfie chant is fruity. If you chant something at 11:11 then make sure it's "One more Year".
Tonight's score Sens 4-2
Go Sens Go

10 or so games a season (more if I had the $) since season #1

I go to see the best players in the world play the best game in the world - couldn't care less what the other fans do.

Congrats on the day, SC. On HF there's a discussion about if this is a communications change for the Ottawa organization. I hope so.

Feel bad for the off-internet types forced to read Brennan, Big Bruce, others.. Anyone with an internet cxn knows that Chirp, SSS, Yost, T6S, and ST do a 10x better job for 1/10th the pay.

Shouldn't really argue with what you're saying.
If "organized crowd theater" helps keep the stands full and the team in town - it's a good thing.

But honestly attending a game with 20,000 mutes wouldn't be a problem for me.

Just a question to throw out there.

Who do you want Ottawa to play in the playoffs:

the New York Rangers or the Boston Bruins. I personally prefer the rangers because they aren't the defending champs.

I agree, but it does not seem it will pan out that way.
Also by sitting their best 3 players, Boston seems to not mind playing Ottawa.... they should use that as motivation!

Would love the play the Rangers.
Not predicting an upset or anything but would expect a more entertaining, free-wheeling series.

Plus the New York coach's antics will keep me laughing all summer.

Yeah it was a nice attempt, its gonna take awhile for people to get into it, its just the way it is in Ottawa, people want to watch the game more than cheer. Dont know why they bother to go live then...

As much as I wish the Sens the best, I have nothing but respect for Thomas and his stance against the White House. If 1% of citizens would follow in his footsteps, we just may be able to keep our few remaining rights.
