Senators Grab Division Lead

It is March 17.  There are just ten games left in the regular season and the Ottawa Senators have taken over the top spot in the Northeast Division.

Filip Kuba played the role of overtime hero and the Senators overcame a dreadful night on the power play as they picked up a crucial victory on home ice.  With the 2-1 overtime win over the Canadiens, the Sens leap frog the Bruins and move into second place in the Eastern Conference.

After a Tomas Plekanec shorthanded goal gave the Habs a 1-0 lead, the Senators were sent to the man advantage time after time and failed to beat Carey Price.  Four shots caught iron behind the Canadiens netminder and Montreal defenders blocked shot after shot.

The end result was an ugly 0/9 night on the power play.

It just seemed like a night where the Sens weren't going to get a break. That was until a great hustle play by Zack Smith set up the game tying goal by Colin Greening with under 14 minutes to play.  Ottawa had a couple of chances to win this one in regulation but Carey Price stood tall in the Montreal net.  If not for Price, this is a game the Sens would have won handily.

Considering the outcome in the shootout on Wednesday night, you knew that Ottawa would go for it in the overtime and that is exactly what they did.

Erik Karlsson lugged the puck out of the Ottawa zone and hit a streaking Daniel Alfredsson on the right side.  Alfie made a quick move on the Habs defender and hit a wide open Kuba on the left point.  Kuba had all day to pick his spot and made no mistake beating Price on the blocker side much to the delight of about 60% of the fans in attendance.

The win gives the Senators control of the division for the first time this season and sends a strong message to the rest of the league. The Bruins, who now have two games in hand, will have a chance to regain top spot when they host the Flyers tomorrow night.

And depending on the result of that game, the Sens can either regain or stretch their Northeast lead with a win over the Leafs on St. Patrick's Day Saturday.

  • I mentioned this in the comment section but wanted to pass along some really exciting news related to the site.  For the first time, SensChirp will be getting media access and press pass for the April 5th game against the Bruins.  Obviously a really exciting opportunity for me personally but it's something that would not have been possible with ongoing support from the readers of this site.  Thanks goes out to each and every one of you.
  • Bryan Murray spoke with Elliote Friedman during tonight's broadcast and provided a handful of interesting tid bits.  The first is that he expects Anderson to return to the net sometime next week.  Also on the goaltending front, he mentioned that one of Lehner or Bishop will be sticking with the club even when Anderson does return.  Murray also indicated that while no formal negotiations have been held related to Erik Karlsson, he does expect the process to begin in the near future.

Ugly win, but a win nonetheless. Anyone else tired of Gilroy yet?

Anyways, I don't even care... I just scored Row 1 tickets to the Sens vs Jets on the 26th! Here's hoping that it goes to overtime! Both teams need points! I don't even care who wins. Haha.

Go Sens Go!

Now just beat those damn Leafs.

Brutal way to win a hockey game, but a win is a win !

MacLean will have them working on their Power Play at
practice on Saturday morning. Going 0 for 9, indicates
that they do not shoot but pass too much. You could clearly see they kept trying to set up Karlsson way too much.
Also, Karlsson felt some heat, and made bad passes at blue line, while sliding puck to other side of blue line!

Sens outshot the Habs 33-14, but the Habs lead till 3:07 of the third period, when Z.Smith won a race to the puck and set up Greening for the equalizer.

Since Bishop was not overworked , I think that Coach MacLean, will give him another start vs the Leafs tonite.
Do not see any lineup changes , so I guess Daugavins and Konopka will still be healthy scratches.

Nice to see Sens 2nd just below Rangers in Eastern Conference, and leading Northeast Division, just ahead of the Bruins !!

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dropping it after one last comment...

When comparing Spezza and Foligno, I wasn't talking about talent. I was saying that Foligno commits a lot of the same mistakes Spezza did when he was younger. Foligno is still young and has the opportunity to improve. Thats it; offsides and bad penalties can be fixed. Work ethic is all it'll take.

In a year or two we can look back, and we'll see who's right.

So game 1 of my sens road trip is in the books and it ended great. I was blown away by the amount of the Habs fans there, more then my previous visits. But it was satisfied watching them all parade towards the exits ASAP as soon as Kuba scored. Made it fun trying to out yell them and chant them whenever possible.

I have to say, I saw some absolute horror stories in the parking lot after, no less then 3 collisions, and a habs fan got out and punched another persons car leaving a huge dent all over the side. I just sat back and waited and let the chaos take over..

Not sure if anyone else saw it, but another highlight was a guy in a Nordiques jersey holding a sign in french that said.. 'Lets all wish the habs well in their upcoming golf season'

The Greening/Subban fight was a whole bunch of nothing but it was good to see Greening not let himself get pushed around. I still don't understand why he got an extra two or how they missed Subban throwing him down just before it.

Neil's fight was all about energising the team and he did a great job, they had their best part of the game right after the fight. He won the fight, but more importantly kick-started the team.

We have divison lead, they are 1 more point out from a Lotto pick!!

Now to get those pesky leafs back for that last game at SBP... If we nab these 2 points we are pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot and will be minimum 1 point clear of Bean Town and max 3 if they lose again!!!

GO SENS GO. rip em a new one tonight. Give that shaky Reimer a run to the bench.

Might even break out the Karlsson jersey for tonight's St. Party's day dust up!

Watched last night's game and as per usual, I'm always shocked at how good the Habs PK is. McStash is right when he says it's ssomething they can learn from.

On another note, I'm still not sold on Big Ben, but it's hard to argue with his stats so far as a Sen.

He was a,l over the ice last night. Sure, made some mistakes but as did every other defenceman. I still dislike the trade, Gilroy has done nothing to impress me, that being said I accept the trade due to the fact that Lee get the shit end of the stick at every turn here...he was the low Guy on the totem pole due to his draft position and who drafted him. I am also not against giving Gilroy a 1 ye deal to give him a full season with the guys and within the system.

I also hope Lee turns out to be a stud and essentially slaps us in the face...

First of he's wearing #100 for some reason.

Second, he's clearly a superstar in the SEL. The announcers didn't stop talking about him once during the intermission. The camera was constantly following him

I cannot wait to see him play for us. To me he looks more that ready for the nhl and because of his power forward style I think will transition muich more smoothly. If anything will probably like the smaller rink and more physical play

Interesting the way the Sens are reaching out to the blogging community. Good for them -- the mainstream press (outside Ottawa) gives them no coverage, so hey why not. It was laughable listening to the HNIC crew trying to talk up the Sens: "Hey, have you heard of the Erik Karlsson kid? Apparently he's pretty good."

HNIC as usual has spent an entire season covering every detail of another boring Leafs team that won't make the playoffs. Meanwhile, an exciting Sens team down the highway is having a storybook season with all kinds of intriguing plot lines. Sens playoff series' will get low ratings again because the national audience will see this as a team of nobodies. It's just what Melnyk's been complaining about recently and I can see why it's so frustrating for the organization.

Im proud as F^#^ of these fellas and what they have accomplished. I hope we hang on for the full 82 and still come out on top of the B's when they have their 82 games completed.

How can you say that? All game long he delivers crisp passes out of his zone. And he made himself available to receive a pass on the rush numerous times which then creates scoring chances. A few times he got the shot off and a Few times it got blocked just like about 30 other shots the rest of the team took. I don't see how you can't call that creating offense. Every game he's involves in more that a few scoring chances. That's called offense my man

No kidding, I guess people want all of our defencemen to be like Karlsson & all of our forwards to be like Spezza. Greening is having a great yr & yet there are fans that think he should be on the 4th line. Gilroy IMO keeps getting better & eventually will start racking up the points, he has 18 so far this season.

The Spezza & Karlsson fans love the fancy players & then there are others like myself who prefer the Neils, Greenings, Smiths, Carkners & O'Briens who work their asses off on every shift. The character guys, who keep the locker room together, who protect the elite players & make the difference when it counts most. Who got the party started last night? Chris Neil by a decisive win in a fight with Staubis.

anyone else thinks its possible to move up in the draft with Bishop (if he continues to play well the rest of the year)

this is probably way of course... but maybe we could ship bishop to Tampa for their first (or bishop and a B- prospect for their first)

and then ship Tampa's 1st and our 1st for NYI 1st

am I overvaluing Bishop and Tampa's need for a goalie?

and also..if I'm not overvaluing him...would you guys rather keep bishop to be the backup next year?

@ Tcharger,

To be serious, the information that we get from the owner
of this great website, is somewhat more important to me,
than some of the lame comments posted at times. No reflection on your input, which is always informative.

Maybe now that Chirp has a press pass / media pass, he has
no time to post the Game Day Thread ???

Im sure I will get thumbs down but We are currently ahead of Boston by 1 point, and they have 2 games on us
we aren't technically 1st unless boston loses 2 more games right?

We aren't technically first we are ACTUALLY first. The NHL goes on points not win percentage. Therefore we will be above Boston whilst we have more points them then.

It's a simple and beautiful thing.

Ok, but Boston Just got 2 points this afternoon and now they are back on top

Which is half my point, why celebrate 12 hours at the top?

Brutal game last night, hopefully they get their shit together tonight. I don't want to see a repeat of the last 5-0 debacle against the Leafs at home...

That being said, it looks like the Sens and Bruins are going to be flip flopping 2nd/7th for the next while...Either way, we are about 4 wins away from securing a spot!

GO SENS GO! FUCK TORONTO!

No

CBC is totaly Toronto based

The Sens are only 20 years old, so alot of the fanbase were leaf or hab fans before Ottawa got the franchise back. You can already see more and more Sens fans and it won't be long before games are dominated by Sens fans.

Besides, how pathetic do you have to be to wear that perpetual loser logo into a playoff bound teams barn?

Even if the Leafs win 20-0 they are once again, losers.

The problem with this imminent loss has nothing to do with the individual parts, but the lack of play as a whole. The Sens aren't playing as a team right now. They guys instead are being undisciplined and selfish. Stupid penalties, mental lapses, inconsistency; that's what's leading to the loss.

For some reason they always play poorly to the Leafs at home, but not on the road, it must be a mental thing.

But I have no doubt they will rebound from this loss and get back in it. Look at the standings folks. This season has been more than impressive for a rebuilding team.

I've come to the conclusion that playing the Leafs at SBP is more of a mental thing than the aspect of skill. The Sens are the better team, but for some reason, the pressure of playing the Leafs at home where 50% of the fans are Leaf fans always seems to rattle them. They just can't get it done.

At the same time, the first goal was an absolute fluke, and the second one was called by a poor penalty call on the refs on O'Brien of which there wasn't any penalty at all.

But still.

Listen I love Spezza but he won't take us to the Promised Land! I just don't see it. We have some talent coming up. Spezza can get you a young center. He'll be 30-31 by the time we are ready to win it all. He just flings the puck all over the place. MaClean better give him another talking to.

just being honest boys. My opinion.

The senschirp readers should buy a page in the Ottawa citizen challenging Sens fans to rally and sell out the sbp for the rest of the reg season games. It would probably cost about $50 each.

Chirp - what do ou think?

Rrrrrright, I have more respect for Glen Healey, at least he is honest about wanting to blow Brian Burke, some posters on here get their jollies handing out backhanded compliments to the Sens and think we don't see right through them. It's pathetic.

Again, Sens=Playoffs
Leafs=Golf

Everyone on the board knows you are a Leaf fan. You are not fooling anyone. Enjoy your night, A few weeks from now you can move on to baseball, or ballet classes, while the rest of us are watching our team in the playoffs.

P.s. The playoffs are a series where the best teams play each other for the Stanley Cup.

Oh, you mean the same playoffs where the Leafs eliminated us 3 out of 4 years?

Yeah I kinda remember those playoffs? LOL

Do you have any idea how pathetic you are bringing up when the Leafs were in the playoffs last? Did they even have flat screen tv's or HD back then?

OK sorry Bros - just eats at my heart when we lose to the SHITTY LEAFS! I need to see more effort from our stars. Spez just seems to be floating. He has to work harder. C'mon Silfverburg get eliminated already. We're lacking speed - the AHL guys from last years run are bURNT. Peterssen would spark us I think at least to spell some of the guys who are dead tired. Butler - condra take a seat please.

Anybody else hear Healy refer to Bishop as Lerner? As in, Lehner. Just after Phaneuf scored on the 5v3. 7:58 left in the third.

Nice to know he's paying attention to the game.

Hey Tookie - yeah trading Spezza for a glass of water.

You trade a guy like Spezza you get good players back - unless of course your name is Brian burke.

111519, you posted the 1994/95 roster for some reason. Of course they are all retired as that was 18 years ago. The Leafs last had a playoff game in '03/04. There are, I believe, 7 players who were in that game who haven't retired. But, don't worry, those 7 will have retired before the next Leafs' playoff game.

Their next game is against Boston.

This past week were 3 impt games against Mtl & Tor... Sens came out at .500.

The Leafs blocked everything tonight from the point.. and the Sens kept shooting from there... Too many frustration penalties by the vets. I can expect that from the young players but not Alfie & Foligno.

Neil should have jumped Komi instead of Grabovski -- what the hell was he thinking?

Bad game by the Sens. Not Bishop's fault.. but I'd like to see Lehner for one more game..

Sens had better smarten up... NJ is up next.. They play like they have the last 3 games it's gonna be ugly.

Who is going to be the #1 centre on this team if they get rid of Spezza? Not every team has a #1 centre... so to trade one is stupid.

I did notice more Sens jerseys in the stands tonight compared to the last Leaf game I was at... but it got quiet in the 3rd... The way they were playing... nothing to cheer about. I kept yelling.. but not a lot of people did...

Vancouver fans in Toronto, the leafs virtually every game in Buffalo.

Baseball has Red Sox/Yankees fans taking over all the time. Its actually hilarious that you will never see these crowds in Toronto

Anyways, Sens were probably pooped from 3 games in 4 nights.
Leafs can plan their parade from this one.

Watched Colombus vs Vancouver last night and Rick Nash would be the perfect compliment to Spezza. I really think we have the right pieces to make an offer on him and that his "list" of team will surely have to be made longer after that deadline fiasco. Colombus could use a guy like Bishop or Lehner on their team.
Nash-Spezza-Silfverberg
Michalek - Turris - Alfie
Zibanejad - Z. Smith - Greening
How can you thumbs down this ??
Sorry I know this has been beaten already, just my opinion when I see a no-show from Jason. I hate losing to the leafs.

Not trying to make excuses for Spezza but with his close friend being killed in that ski accident last week, it must be hard for him to concentrate on hockey. I'm assuming he will be at the funeral on Monday and this must be weighing heavily on Spezza.

Funny how people are taking shots at Ottawa for the fact that Leaf fans show up and are loud at SBP. They make it sound like it happens only here. Unfortunately it happens in every Canadian rink, yes Winnipeg as well. I explain it to people like this. The Leaf fans are like cockroaches. Every time you try to kill one, they seem to multiply. It's an infestation of a kind only seen between October and the first week in April. Eventually the cockroaches disappear in April and unfortunately return next October.

Ottawa's Powerplay is BRUUUUTALLL

Everybody is just standing around passing the puck back and forth, but NOBDOY IS MOVING THEIR FEET

no wonder MTL and TOR managed to block so many shots, its really easy to read where a player is going to shoot when he isn't moving

Look at how TOR scored on the PP. pass down low, kessel SKATES to the middle of the ice and fires

Two shifts later Ottawa is back on the PP and they're all standing still trying to T-up a one timer

Jason Spezza has been terrible the past 3 games but especially last night, he was a ghost

Agreed, agreed, agreed.

Someone was mentioning how we need to shuffle our shoutout selections (aka Michalek and Spez) because they have become so predictable. Well, so is our PP. Always the same play, shot from the point -- blocked and deflected into a corner, forwards hussle and pass back to the point. Repeat until the penalty expires...

And Spezza... I don't want to shit on the guy but christ, he's not playing anything close to a top line centreman the last 3 games. No hussle, bad passes, no heart...WTF?? Butler isn't the issue on that line, he's working his tail off.

Like Sandy said, Its gut check time. Some teams are pushing hard to get into the playoffs and we have NJ and Pitts this week. Need at least 1 of those 2 games.
