Anderson On Road to Recovery

As the Ottawa Senators players and fans get set to embark on the Heritgae Train trip to Montreal, the team got some good news on the injury front.

While Robin Lehner and Ben Bishop have done an admirable job over the past seven games, the fact is the Senators a better hockey team with their number one goalie. Craig Anderson stopped shots and handled a regular hockey stick for the first time since the injury.

Obviously this is a great sign for Anderson.

He has been progressing well on the road to recovery and while MacLean was hesitant to establish a time line for his return, he is getting close. In the meantime, the Sens play on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and will need contributions from Bishop and potentially Lehner during this busy stretch. MacLean emphasized that there is a chance Lehner could return to the big club at any time.

Jesse Winchester has made progress as of late but was not on the ice today. Still sounds like it is a week to week thing rather than day to day. It has been a long road back for Winchester but obviously the organization has to be careful with a concussion.

The Sens are back on the ice for practice tomorrow at 11:00 AM.

  • Here is the latest edition of the Sens Prospect Report. The organization has to like what they've seen from Stefan Noesen the last little while. The 21st overall pick in 2011 has racked up seven points in three games last week and now has 80 points in 61 games.
  • A number of interesting issues discussed at today's GM's Meetings including Hybrid Icing, hand pass in the defensive zone and the officiating in the league this season.  For a great overview of the issues discussed, check out TSN's Insider Trading.
  • Mentioned this on the site a couple weeks back but it's time for a little reminder. There is a push among the fan base to get Bell to offer HD signal in the Ottawa area. Bell requires 200 complaints to in order to make the channel available in HD so lets do our part. Readers can email Bell at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. great to hear about noesen and the rest of prospects. yesterday brynas won game 1 of playoffs and silfverberg ended with an assist. hope puempel returns from concussion soon.

edit: just noticed they have silfver at 43points in 42 games. he actaully ended with 54 in 49

Even though Montreal and Toronto are trying to fail for nail, they will trying to win while playing against us, they will try to stop our playoff push and spoil our post season fun. On paper these are easy wins, in reality these wins could be critical for us. We need fans to be loud and proud and help the sens with energy during these games and the rest will be up to the pros.

Go Sens!

Yeah Landeskog is unreal. He's on pace for 21 goals, 49 points and 219 hits for his rookie season. Add to that he's a +20 on the Avs, a team who's next highest +/- forward is a +3.

I'm excited by Mika's potential too, but Landeskog is the guy we all hoped for last June. Unfortunately that late season surge really took us out of the running for his services. Landeskog is well on his way to becoming one of the premier powerforwards in the game.

I'm embarrassed that my team would admit any affiliation whatsoever with Bell. The scoreboard is very nice, but the Bell logo has a negative effect on the Sens goodwill. Bell hurts their brand. Evidence of this is how they put "HD" on the scoreboard yet will not even broadcast the games in high def.

It's like when Bell tries to deceive people with "Fibe" into thinking they are receiving fibre optic connections...

ok I am a little confused... why would we not consider getting Silfverberg over here for our playoff push???

I know we have had the Zibby talk, and burning a year off of his contract, but the reality is that Silfver, seems much more ready for the jump, and we all know that we could use him in our top 6 for the added offence.

It seems a little odd that our management has not had these discussions

Would this not be a most logical move?

What are the logistics in getting him here for the end of the season? Anyone know?

Hey Tooks what the heck are you talking about ? Get over the Landeskog wet dream and back to Agreed. I think perfect scenario is both of them come back. Hopefully Jacob is as dominant here as he is in Sweden and can keep up with our 1st line. I think Mika would fit in beautifully on the 2nd. If Silverberg can't play at that level just yet then play him with Z.Smith and Condra and keep Greening with the big boys. I think he does a pretty good job making space for Spezza and Michalek at least until we get someone whose really made for the 1st...aka Parise lol

The best part is Im pretty sure a year is already being burned this year off of Silverbergs contract so it really doesn't matter if he comes back

You almost have to put him with Spezz and MM9, if Mika comes then Mika goes 2nd line with Turris and Alfie.

As per Cassie Campbell, Mika is staying in Sweden to help Djurgårdens try and avoid relegation. This means he will play 10 more games over there, not sure on the exact schedule but looking at the calendar I wouldn't expect that to finish until the end of this month. So even if we wanted him over here, he would barely get a chance for any regular season games, we'd be throwing him right into the playoff fire.

Zibanejad and Silfverberg both made their decision to play over there instead of toil with Bingo. I think allowing either of them to scoot over and play for the big club now, just in time for playoffs would send a bad message, not to mention where it would put them development-wise...

We have great chemistry going on now, a team that believes in each other and we get our star goaltender back fairly soon.

I say stick with the plan, and don't call up any of the kids from overseas. They can battle it out next training camp.

Holy shit, I didn't realize we play the Habs again on March 23rd, that makes 3 games against them in 9 nights starting tomorrow!

Hopefully they are their frail selves and we can steam-roll them. On the other hand, these games against teams with "nothing to lose" can be scary and we have a lot of them coming up.

Hope our squad made the most of their short break this week and are ready to work their asses off down the stretch and not take any team lightly.

I'm unsure what or anything will be done with Zibanejad. The team this year has really been about chemistry and rewarding the players that played hard and played well in Bingo... however letting Zibanejad see some NHL playoffs games would be very beneficial in the long run.

The other thing to consider is that wasn't Zibanejad ineligible to play in the AHL this year since he was still under contract in Sweden? In that case I can see it being less of an issue with players on the team.

Silfverberg on the other hand could have signed to play in Ottawa/Binghamt on this year but decided to play overseas. But his play may warrant that he be on the team so I'
m not sure how much that will affect the dressing room.

-1 #36 TheAndswer 2012-03-13 10:57
I don't think we should worry too much about burning off a year of entry level contracts. If the focus is truly long term then it would be best to get these guys some playoff experience no?

Also, assuming that these players get better and progress steadily in the next few years wouldn't you want to have their contract renewed before they put up even bigger numbers?
Quote

0 #37 JayBo 2012-03-13 11:07
I think Zibanejad could have played in the AHL but it would have required that the organization buy his contract out from his club in Sweden (or something along those lines). Plus the Sens organization promised they would send him back to Sweden if the didn't make the big club.

Because NHL playoff hockey is bad for development? The best players available the morning of a playoff game is who should play. Look at the success PK SUbban had for Montreal when he was "thrown into the fire." he was amazing and was playing on pure adrenaline. If Zibenejad and Jakob S are available, they should be with the team. Practice with them, watch them prepare for playoffs, etc. If coach MAcLean thinks they are ready for a game in the playoffs, would anyone here disagree with him?

ANd I really dont know much about rules surrounding SEL players coming over. @Hax - Why is Jakob S not available for playoffs if Mika Z is?

If I've said it once I've said it a million times, "In Maclean we Trust." If that is the direction we decide to move in with Z-bad then that would be interesting, I am just voicing my opinion that we should be careful here, even if burning a year off his ELC wasn't a factor, which it is...

Taking a player who was not ready to start the season with the big club, send them over to the SEL where they didn't exactly have a jaw dropping season indicates to me at least that the player needs more development. Also consider factors like the ice size and physicality of the game which is why we really want our prospects learning in BINGO. If Mika was lights out over there and management thought he had earned his way into a roster spot that would be great, but I'm not sure that's the case.

We have good chemistry, guys have been working hard together and supporting each other and we've also had guys toughing it out in our farm system. I would be more than happy to stick to a conventional approach to a playoff run, with the depth we have over here and ready to go.

Quote:
For the first time since suffering a concussion Jan. 4, Matt Puempel took part in some contact drills in a pre-game skate Tuesday morning with players not in the starting lineup.

Petes' coach Mike Pelino said Puempel will have his first full contact practice with the rest of the team Wednesday. Whether or not Puempel gets into one of the final two regular season games is still unknown, said Pelino.

He would need to get final clearance from the team's medical staff but also pronounce himself ready to play as well.

“We'll just take it one day at a time,” said Pelino.
