There were few surprises last night as each Captain stuck with the predicted script. After taking Karlsson with his first pick, Alfie was able to snap up the other two Sens players as well as a number of his fellow Swedes.
Team Alfredsson even managed to snag former-Senator Brian Elliott as one of the goalies.
Meanwhile, Big Z and his assistant Joffrey Lupul (booo! sorry Joffrey) were able to put together a team that includes all the Leafs and Bruins in the game and not surprisingly, no Vancouver Canucks. Everything went according to plan for both Captain with one exception- Colin Greening ended up with the bad guy.
The fans in attendance and watching at home were hoping Alfie could swing a last minute deal but it never materialized.
All in all, a fun night for the fans and for the players. Former Ottawa 67 Logan Couture had the distinction of being the last player picked but handled it with class and dignity. I'm sure the new car made it a little easier.
Here is how the teams stack up heading into the weekend...
Team Chara
Joffrey Lupul, Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin, Marian Hossa, Corey Perry, Phil Kessel, Patrick Kane, Jarome Iginla, Marian Gaborik, Jordan Eberle, Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn
Zdeno Chara, Kimmo Timonen, Ryan Suter, Brian Campbell, Dion Phaneuf, Dennis Wideman
Tim Thomas, Carey Price, Jimmy Howard
Team Alfredsson
Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, Claude Giroux, Steven Stamkos, Daniel Sedin, Milan Michalek, Henrik Sedin, James Neal, John Tavares, Scott Hartnell, Jason Pominville, Logan Couture
Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Shea Weber, Dan Girardi, Keith Yandle, Alex Edler
Henrik Lundqvist, Jonathan Quick, Brian Elliott

- I'm sure a number of readers will be making their way down to the fan fair at some point today. Here is some information on what you can expect, including a list of which players will be there throughout the day. Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and the legendary Gordie Howe are among the players signing autographs!
- And for those of you that had planned to attend the Energizer Skate, it has now been moved to the Rink of Dreams. Click here for more information!
- Mentioned this on Twitter but for those of you attending tomorrow's skills competition or the game on Sunday, Local Heroes on Clyde will be running a shuttle bus to the event. The cost is $5 and if you eat there before the bus departs, you get 10% of your meal. Great way to get to and from the event. Any questions just call (613) 224-3873 for details.
Look forward to hearing everyone's stories from this weekend in the comment section below!
That was awesome
Grand Poobah of this year's All-Star festivities in Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson is making the most of what many believed would be his final NHL season as a player. Not so fast.
As relayed by the Ottawa Sun, Alfredsson told commissioner Gary Bettman on his radio show that he's leaning towards playing for the Ottawa Senators again next season -- the final year of his current contract.
"The way this season is going, if I'm still healthy after this season, I'm hoping I can go one more," said Alfredsson. "This year has been so good. If we can make the playoffs, that would almost be a dream come true."
The 39-year-old captain has 17 goals and 21 assists so far this campaign. Carrying a cap hit of $4.875-million, Alfredsson is only owed $1 million in 2012-13. That's a significant discount for a frugal team like the Senators.
Hell yes
For tonight I might just get 'lit' and skate around the driveway a bit, the weather sure is permitting.
Yes.
They are $15 at the door, $10 at Canadian Tire or Sports Experts.
wish I was there, that is a great price to meet Spezz, Alfie and Mr. Hockey...too bad a flight to Ottawa would cost me a lot and of course, my job, possibly my marriage too lol
Fastest Skater:
Last year's winner Grabner is not there, so there will be a new champ, I see Team Alfie winning this in a close one, Karlsson, Letang, Michalek vs Kessel, Gaborik, Seguin...
Break Away Challenge:
Ovie the clear winner in this one.....but he aint there. Kane can dazzle and we all know the King of moves (Datsyuk) will put on a show, Team Chara wins this one.
Accuracy Shooting:
D. Sedin was the winner last year, I think Team Alfie wins this one, they have the most accurate shooters of the bunch in D. Sedin, Spezza, Stamkos and Giroux. Datsyuk, Hossa, Iggy prob the best on the other side.
Skills Challange Relay:
I would go again with Team Alfie here with a slight edge, skating, passing and puck handling. Team Alfie has 2 of the 3, could go either way really.
Hardest Shot:
Chara...next!
Elimination Shootout:
Tough call but I'll go with Team Chara to have more players remaining, Datsyuk and Malkin and Kane, possibly finish top 3...
What do you think?
Anyone know where to get downloaded copies of hockey games? I would really like to make a dvd with the skills and all star game on it to look back on in a few years. Any help would be great. Keep up the great work guys.
Chara wins Hardest Shot
Greening wins Fastest Skater
Yandle wins puck control relay
Datsyuk wins Shootout Challenge......please
Team Alfie wins 13-8 Saturday!
Agreed about Alfie. I also enjoyed the Spezza / Karlsson banter between picks.
i was there yesterday and a schedule said perry and iginla are there for autographs early in the day. not sure what else
Damn thats not good, even if it is minor, now he's more at risk for another...
yeah.. really sucks. i searched arround to see if it was an ugly hit or something. everyone says they didnt see zib get hit at all. he just woke up the following morning with headaches and all other concussion like symptoms.
not like that helps but i hope it means its just minor (although you bring a good point that now he is more susceptible to another)
And lets not kid ourselves either, his style of play is going to bring alot more chances to get one. Hopefully this doesnt affect his play in the future?
haha I had the same issue...but the wife promised if they make the playoffs I can fly back to see a game or two
then I need your wife to talk to mine lol, but mine is a leaf fan...she will be bitter that we could be watching post season hockey while they aren't again lol
I am one of the ones always saying you can't fault a player for being Russian and it depends on the player but I have to admit Ovie is a cry baby for not going to the all stars, that and the world juniors where they were too good to wear the silver metal the whole frigin bunch of them, stating to be rare to back them up.
Sorry that was my ovi rant.
Yeah but Chara didnt chose him, the Rookies picked they're sides.
HOWEVER...
watching Lupul deal with the booing last night put a smile on my face. Ultimately, he doesn't exhibit AS MUCH douchebagge ry as many of the other leafs (see Phaneuf), and he lapped it up. Good on him for taking it in stride - it made for great entertainment.
I really enjoyed that draft, and I can't wait to see the skills comp tomorrow.
by the way - you may just realize who Peluso really is, because if I'm sitting near anyone who boos Alfie tomorrow at the Skills comp... #tasmaniandevil
Go team white
~Peluso
HERE IN CANADA, I BELIEVE THAT'S REFERRED TO AS A HANGOVER LOL...
That's pretty cool
"Everything in their power"???
I hope you don't mean stalling the rebuild one iota. Alfie would not want that and neither would I.
Now, spending more than planned to sign some UFAs or something then fine, but DO NOT move out any future assets for rentals - this year or next.
I hope they take a run at Suter, Parise, Gleason, Ruutu, etc.
Spend to the cap on quality UFA's only and/ or trade future picks, (not from the upcoming draft) for quality players that are currently on a team that has cap or budget problems.
Signing a UFA - won't stall the rebuild, in fact helps if we end up dumping later for more picks. Just costs EM money (fine by me).
Trading future picks for young roster players from other teams (i.e. guys that are still getting better) - not hurting the rebuild and in fact speeds it up (also fine).
Trading picks or prospects of any kind for older guys on their way down - NO F'N WAY.
-Karlsson for ASG MVP!

Seems like team Chara have a lot of confidence in Greening, putting him in 2 out of 6 possible competitions.
I'll go with Greening. He was a full second faster in the Sens Skills than the winning time in last year's All-Star Skills.
Better not include Glenn Healey.. I hate that guy.
Shane Prince is going to be complete steal this kid can flat out ball ...
A somewhat amazing recovery.
I'll tell you one thing.....we would forget real quick if he (melnyk/murray) could land us Shea weber.....he would look great in the Sens line up!
Anyone else get a chill & choked up when Alfie was announced?
Can I get a praise Alfie???
I attended Fan Fest today with my 3 year old boy and I have to say what a great job Ottawa put in with the event. One thing though, why gauge the fans if you are attracting thousands of fans? I paid $9.50 for an orange juice and a small bag of popcorn. Man I sound like an old man....
It's all over. Ended today at 6.
Sunday, there's a VIP only pre-game party, then the game then back to real life...
The place was heaving.
We want a cup in this city dammit!!!!!!!!!
Go sens go!!!
to live.
Kessel really surprised me, with his shooting skills in Accuracy Contest with 4 targets in 10 seconds or so !
Stamkos was to me the best in shooting on goalies, especially the last event Elimination Shootout, which
he won !
Both Patrick Kane and Corey Perry were very innovative in
using props to score goals , which made us all laugh !!
After watching Stamkos wish there was a way to get him in a Sens jersey.
you guys are lucky to live in Ottawa this weekend.
POP!!!! Hear that? That was me bursting your hope balloon.
Melnyk gave an interview before the All Star draft and said that the ASG is far from a money making operation for the organisation and that any profit the team itself might make is negligible. Most of the money raised has nothing to do with the Ottawa Senators and the money generally goes to the city.
The Sens organisation did a good job of putting it all together. At times I was surprised at how quiet the crowd was but my fellow Sens fans never missed a beat in booing the Leafs, and cheering for the Sens players.
Highlights of the evening as a live fan:
- Pre-event mascot game (hilarious stuff)
- Warm up surprise: Letang and Karlsson with wicked shootout moves
- Jumbotron in HD.. WOW! Finally!!
- Chara was the highlight for many but Alfie and Spezza winning their hardest shot heat (especially against Phaneuf) : Priceless.
- Lundqvist, Stamkos and Tavares in the elimination shootout. All three impressed thoroughly.
Lets hope Team Alfie can pull out a surprise victory in the All Star game today. Lot of offensive power on Team Chara. Quick, Elliott and Lundqvist will be the deciding factors.
The Skills Comp was awesome live
That Chara shot was downright amazing.
@Dirty Dr. Quif -- I agree.. Muckler did a lot of damage to this organization in trading Hossa in the first place.. and letting Chara walk -- when all others with the Sens organization said to keep him and let Redden go. Chara said this week that he did not want to leave. Hossa said when he signed that contract with the Sens he thought he would be here for the long term. What would have been if both had still been with the Sens.
Yeah I know under Muckler this team went to the SCF -- but the key players during that run were already in Ottawa before Muckler was GM... except for Heatley... where maybe Hossa would have been better...
But we can't go back.. Those were 2 very key mistakes that really hurt the Sens franchise.
So you're saying - just buy a Stanley Cup ?
That worked out real well for the other Ontario team !
Peel is managing the game today.
Enjoy it, it's been a while since his last, and it will be a while until his next goal
Why does it feel like we have played the whole game with one D man?!!?
Feels like im watching NHL 12 OTP with all the bad pinching by the D
This all for fun and this weekend was just as much a tribute to our captain as it was for the ASG and you are going to come on here preaching your negative BS?
get bent
Cheers to the city of Ottawa and all the fans that made this into a special day for the greatest Sen of all time. Hats off to all of you.
And then there's reality, elliot has been overrated all season and making some people question the anderson trade, yes his stats are good but his defence is better... eliott can still get rattled. Yes the game was fun and i didn't care that we lost,it was almost storeybook like if team alfie would've won with alfie the mvp. All is good and yes alfie deserved it, i also think alfredson would be in this years all star game regardless where it was. Didn't mean to be a downer on anyone, just saying im glad we have anderson now.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEYORE !
and tried very hard to get his 3 rd goal, but his luck ran out on him.
It was my first All Star Game, and I must say it was well done Ottawa.
Most enjoyable and memorable moment, was the constant chant of " Alfie, Alfie, Alfie, ...." which was well deserved and much appreciated by Alfredsson !!
Even the Sedin twins were tapping their sticks on the ice to honour Alfie after his 2nd goal. Very appropriate indeed.
Uhhhh.....You guys know they weren't playing with full intensity , right? You guys know they were all playing at half speed, right? Did you see any serious hits? NO. Did you see any real effort? Probably not. It's the All-Star game, it's not supposed to be serious....How they play and the score means absolutely nothing...
