  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

Happy Birthday Alfie!

While his potential final season continues to remain stuck in lockout limbo, today is a significant milestone for the Captain of the Ottawa Senators.

Daniel Alfredsson, the one they call Alfie, turns 40 years old today.  He is the undeniable face of the franchise, the NHL's longest serving captain, and one of the classiest players and more importantly people, in all of the National Hockey League.

With more than 1,100 games in an Ottawa uniform, Alfredsson has racked up 416 goals, 666 assists and an incredible 1,082 points.  He has added another 90 points in a franchise record 111 playoff games.

The thought that this lockout may have ended Alfredsson's career adds additional anger for fans in the Nation's Capital.

The guy has given so much to this team, this organization and this city, that he deserves an appropriate send off whenever he does decide to hang 'em up.  Here's hoping cooler heads will prevail on the CBA front and fans across the league will have the privilege of watching Alfredsson back on the ice for at least one last season.

Happy Birthday Alfie!

The idea of never seeing Alfie play hockey again makes me want to cry. I'm not kidding.

Thanks for all the memories Alfie, am hoping we will see you put on some more heroics, and even though said if you don't, the countless moments of class and passion that you have left us will live on forever, to copy the moniker of one of the people on gmhockey, Alfie will always be Captain Clutch for us.

I will be hard pressed to forgive the NHL if this is how Alfie goes out!

Thanks for all the terrific memories, and here's to one more season!

I was a CH fan for over 30 years, and it took me 5 years to switch from Montreal to Ottawa.

The # 1 reason for becoming an Ottawa Senators fan, was without any doubt, the leadership and consistent play of our Captain Daniel Alfredsson. The above video sums it all up !!

Hope he plays at least 1 more season, and is honored on home ice, and that the Senators retire his #11 !!

HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY ALFIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have watched hockey intenesly for almost 40 years.
And I have had many idols throughout those years,
Lafleur,
Gretzky,

But none can match the level of respect that Alfie has earned.
No Way he retires without at least attempting to give us a proper send off, he has way too much respect for his fans, and himself to not at the very least attempt it.
Lets be clear Alfie is not the average mortal, if others can play in their 40's so can SuperAlfie.

And as for my top memories.
Hammering Tucker then scoring the OT goal against the Laffs in the playoffs
Scoring the overtime goal to put us in the Stanley Cup finals
And the countless times he took this team on his back, and led the charge for for our Sens,
but the one that sticks out above all else that proves the character this man has, and his devotion and dedication to this city, was when he agreed to renegotiate his contract with the Sens, when Bryden was in financial troubles, to ensure that this city keeps their NHL Team!

Praise Alfie... Happy 40th B-day Alfie... which in Superhero age is really only 30!!!

I love the above video - Alfie is the reason I dropped the Habs about 15 years ago to become a Sens fan. Alfie is by far my favourite hockey player of all time with due respect to my 2nd favourite Guy Lafleur.

Serious question. Does anyone know how I'd go about starting a petition to get a statue of Alfie made?

It'd be easier if you were American cuz apparently you could start one on-line, get 25,000 signatures and force Obama to review the petition...
