  • Thank You

Without overstating it, this really was the best season I have had as a fan of the Ottawa Senators.

And while many fans will quickly default to the Stanley Cup run, there was just something about this team that made this lockout shortened season extra special. Cheering for and blogging about the underdog Ottawa Senators team was the most thrilling, unexpected, delightful experience I've had as a sports fan.

BSens Fall to Hershey

After three straight wins in preseason, and then back to back victories to open the regular season, the Binghamton Senators got their first taste of defeat on Friday night- falling 3-2 at the hands of the Hershey Bears.

Binghamton scored twice in the third period but could not find a way to beat Bears starter Danny Sabourin for the equalizer. The BSens have a chance to get back on track tonight when they host the Syracuse Crunch.

Robin Lehner was one of the best players on the ice through Bingo's first two games but struggled a bit last night as the Bears beat him three times on 21 shots.

All the offence came from the back end as Captain Andre Benoit scored the first goal for the home side while Tyler Eckford's shorthanded goal closed the gap to one.

Mika Zibanejad set up the Eckford goal and was possibly the best player on the ice in the third period. This lockout is obviously rough on hockey fans but there are some definite positives for the development of Sens prospects. Both Zibanejad and Silfverberg are getting a great opportunity to adjust to the North American game at the AHL level and that should be a huge benefit for the big club when the season starts.

The BSens have a chance for a quick rebound tonight againt the Crunch. No official line up changes announced by Luke Richardson yet but there was some talk about resting Jared Cowen in favour of Swedish defenceman Fredrik Claesson. Should have full line up details a little closer to game time.

You can tune in on the Team 1200 or check the comment section below for a stream.

  • Interesting piece here from Bruce Garrioch and the Ottawa Sun. An exclusive interview with Donald Fehr in which he discusses the current stance of the players and where he sees the negotiations going from here. There are currently no talks scheduled between the NHL and NHLPA with the window to play a full 82 game season closing quickly.
  • Quick update on the Sens prospects currently playing in the CHL.  Matt Puempel scored last night and now has seven goals through 9 games.  Stefan Noesen scored his 7th of the season in just 10 games while Cody Ceci has 11 points in as many games with a struggling Ottawa 67's team.  Goaltender Francois Brassard has an 8-2 record with a .919 save percentage and last week was named to the QMJHL team for the Subway Super Series to take place next month.

Zibanejad looks like a force so far this season.

Good to see Puempel, Noesen, Ceci, Brassard, and Driedger doing great.

Doesn't Bingo still have too many players on their roster? How many are hurt & who are they? And who has been sent to Elmira so far or back to junior? I really like that big line of Dzuirzynski - Grant - Stone ... hopefully all three will find their way to Ottawa for next season.

I assume that Bishop should get in a game soon & why haven't they not sent Prince back to junior yet?

When will Prince be getting back? And when he does, will he be a top 6 guy?

Bingo GDT? is team 1200 covering tonight's game?

Also seen that lawson got recalled to bingo from elmira, did someone get hurt? or is bishop just not in gameday shape yet?

I really think the owners are going to stick to their guns on this one. According to Shayne Hnidy, the majority of players over 26 want to get whatever they can and get back playing within a few weeks. When you only have 3 or 4 seasons left in your career, this is not an ideal situation.

if the players are adamant about moving to 50/50 gradually.

Why don't they make a six year contract that sees the players get
52
51
50
49
48
47

Players get what they want now which is basically to look after themselves and the owners get what they want which is better long term profitability.

Huge brawl after bingo's 4th goal (yes 4-0) with 2 fights. Great passing play finished off by grant (stone assist). Exciting game with lots of fights! Who needs the NHL?

Dziurzynski/Gra nt/Stone, wow, they are awesome.

Stone assists on Grant's goal making it 4-0 then Dziu beats the crap out of a Crunch player post-goal. SUCH A FUN GAME!

Only he can give up a 5-0 lead by letting in 5 goals in pretty much 1 period.

Sens lose 6-5. Holy crap I cannot believe it.

All on Lawson, no matter what anyone says. Giving up soft goals like he did absolutely deflates a team. WHY wasn't Bishop the backup ARGH!

I hate to say this, but this is when Lehner has to take some ownership on this loss.

He lost his temper, or thought it would be fun to fight...got kicked out and they lose big time. For all the "maturity" talk about him...this was definatively bad judgement on his part. He needs to be smarter than this. If you want to be a starter, you have to be responsible and not just do stupid things like this for self-gratificat ion.

Lehnzies is taking a ton of heat, especially from "The Voice of Criticism" on Team 1200. Again, Rob Lenz is the one that will take us to the promised land when the team matures. So he pummeled some hick goalie that will be squeegeeing cars in a few years, it happens man.

Lawson can't entirely be blamed but that game was sadly reminescent of that 6-5 loss to Buffalo 4 or 5 years ago in the playoffs...

Silfverberg - not overly impressed so far. Its early though. Stone has great hands - he's a keeper. The guy does everything.

If Lehner could see into the future and witness how poorly Lawson was playing, then he should have avoided the fight. But the team was up 5-0 halfway through the game, and nobody could have predicted how bad Lawson was going to play. The team dragged a bit after Lehner left but they really weren't given any confidence knowing that any puck near Lawson could end up in the net.

I really can't put into words what i saw at the arena tonight...there is a ton of blame to go around. The whole team is at fault not just Lawson. Lehner had no business fighting their backup goalie being up 5 zip. The coaching was terrible, and the team as a whole played the atypical not to lose mentality after what happened. If anyone has any questions about tonight I will try to answer them. But in my 8 years now of being a season ticket holder down here I have never seen such a meltdown.

Wow, tough to hear.
A melt down by a young team after a big lead, nothing new. Not fun to watch but hopefully this will become a lesson learned. WHat did you mean about poor coaching? What do you think Richardson didn't do or could have done differently? Really appreciate the insight timwrx.

Things like failing to put a replacement in the box during Boros 5 minute major. They did the greatest job killing the penalty but when it was up they continued to skate down 5 on 4 because no one was there to come out of the box. All coaches usually do and have a designated guy to sit those penalties. Ex: last year it was always Hamilton. And the fighting getting out of control allowing the momentum to swing. Watching the lead evaporate and not taking a timeout to focus the guys. And as far as goaltending, after Lehner was tossed Bishop dressed and sat. Not sure if he couldn't play do to injury or rules or what.
