Couldn't disagree with you more, the viewership has already shown to be strong enough to deserve a better contract next time around if you read any news article about it. If we all turned into at home watchers for a season it would definitely impact the ratings. To compare it to a one off winter classic viewership is just a disservice to the conversation. As for the charity idea, how does that help fans who aren't sure if they want to come back? The Sens already help and donate to so many charities. You're obviously a fan who will just follow hockey no matter what they do, and that's cool, but you may want to find a better alternative to reach those who are not like minded. And where does this assumption of giving tickets to those who never buy? It wouldn't be hard to tie it into a sales promotion if that makes you feel better, but giving up on the fans this lockout has lost is a recipe for failure. It's not easy to wait for the next generation of kids to get hooked, that doesn't happen overnight. It's much easier to attract someone who's already been a fan.

If I was the Owner in Ottawa I would do what Melynik just did but go further. I would make it clear I didn't support the lock out and take whatever fine the NHL gave me. I think the worst thing for Ottawa Senators Business is to think Melynik is supporting the lock out. People will be more willing to come back to Ottawa Senators games if their owner was opposed to the lock out and he will probably make back his money via ticket sales compared to lost of ticket sales the team would have if you keeps quiet and it looks like he is just another greedy owner. I don't need any other crap at hockey games, I'm there to watch the game, like most other fans and I think the owner needs to take the "spite" out of the fans thinking as a reason to not going to games in the future. I think it would be the best thing for the Sens if it because news in the Ottawa papers, TSN, CBC that Melynik has spoken out against the lock out.

The Sens are actually stepping up over the lockout. They are honouring all the benefits that are allotted to each season ticket holder. On Saturday I am going to pick up my new free personalized jersey! The thing with the leafs and habs games are that it's sometimes painful to go to those games because we are surrounded by idiots. There is also crazy incentive to sell your tickets for 3-4 times what you paid for it and sit at home and watch it all for free. I go to about 20 games a season and only go to 1 leafs and 1 habs game, the rest I don't want to be there.

Staying home watching the games on tv is not going to dramatically impact ratings to the point of a better tv contract, I think a few people underestimate the sample size were talking about. The outdoor classic has close to 4 million viewers. If you are looking to win over fans and public opinion, give back but not by way of free tickets to people that will never buy a ticket but rather taking a portion of the proceeds and donating to a local charity like CHEO or maybe minor hockey Why not offer up a dollar on every beverage sold or something. Ultimately, I don't feel like the NHL owes me anything, I've been a fan of the Sens since they joined the league and a season ticket holder for 3 years, I just miss it! Without the owners, the Sens wouldn't exist but there will always be hockey players in Canada...

First off, After locking out the team for an entire season, my captain has retired and the NHL is still playing games towards another full season lockout. i would form an alliance with the canadian teams restart the WHA and make a new league made up of 8 Canadian and profitable teams. the league consists of a 65 game season and 3 rounds of 7 game playoffs. the teams are set to make record profits and the players are well compensated for. the TV deals signed have boosted profits and have allowed us to lower ticket prices 20% with the new addition of quebec the teams are now known just as the city/province name since the NHL is trying to fight us on franchise names such as the senators. we are known as the Ottawa professional hockey team. alfie continues to practice with the team and has agreed to play home only games for the regular season to be with family. he is semi-retired sort to speak. Our new Captain chris philips has shown great leadership in the summer getting the boys ready for the new up coming season. With canadian pride and record viewers the league is set for the next 50+ years and no strikes or lockouts are allowed in respect to the fans. The new WHA will wait until the NHL goes into protection due to record losses of canadian fans. the WHA plans to buy the franchises of detroit, chicago, boston, philidelphia, pittsburg from its creditors. the Loss of nhl hockey in the south has sparked new american sports of professional looting and jail time murder spree television. this has been great for canadians all around.

Ah ok. Well then I'd say if you already get some free, it would be hard for them to offer you more for free and still give free tickets to the non-season ticket holders. I just feel like it's a solution that doesn't please enough people and leaves too many out in the cold (especially with a condensed preseason). Hopefully they come back with something substantive for all to enjoy and forget about the harm done. But again, that would mean the owners see us as more than dollar signs and cattle. Maybe they could do 3 years of free preseason games, everyone signs up and gets 2 tickets to 2 games over 3 years.

@Chad - Good business is about making your customers happy, retaining them and looking at it from a long term view. Short term meaningful givebacks still make long term business sense. Whether I'm a fan or an owner I should realize this. The truth of the matter is if owners and players want to give back to the fans they'd both allocate a portion of the CBA settlement towards the fans. (ex: each side gives back 2.5% towards their fans instead of in escrow) This idea that it's a bad business decision if it reduces current revenue is a huge mistake most businesses make these days, and you can thank the stock market for that because it's not longer acceptable to show a stable market it must be a growing one. But the NHL isn't owned by public stockholders and they should know better. If fans want to show their displeasure, we'd all stop going to games and just watch on tv for a year. During this time the owners would be forced to reduce ticket prices to an acceptable level to attract fans back. Not only that, fans would actually be doing a long term service to the game as in 2 years when the tv contract is due for renewal, the viewership will have increased so much the contract would be significantly higher. Then fans return to the stadiums restoring the stability of the industry. That's just one example but as a fan or an owner or just a casual intelligent person, nickle and dimming your fans with glitter to make more money is not the solution. In summary, your "offerings" will bring back the fans that were coming back anyways, as those are mainly the ones in support of it on here, it does little for those that have left the game completely or those that require a meaningful demonstration of the owners giving a shit.

@sensnation You're definitely coming at this from a fan's perspective. My point is that I would be a new owner taking over. I'd be on your side completely if it was a fan's point of view I was taking. I chose to play the role of owner, and I was being mindful of the costs associated with more "meaningful" givebacks. I also wanted to continue some of the things that Eugene has provided for our franchise. The stability, security and culture of the team is completely different from the dreadful early years of this franchise. As a new owner, there are things that I wouldn't want to rock the boat about. As for Tim Murray, I get your point about a full interview process. I would assume though that, at this point, they would know whether or not Tim Murray would be capable. My point is simply to provide the team with stability going forward. I don't see much value in bringing in an outsider given what I already know about Tim Murray. If I am missing something, I would say to definitely have a full blown interview process. I couldn't agree with you more on the revenue sharing piece. If teams continue to be a going-concern because of the current system, a meaningful revenue sharing program is a must. I'm not sure it will happen because they do not have the same type of TV deal that exists with, say, the NFL.

@chad - Don't worry about it chad, from the reply on here I'm learning how simple the average fan is. This is why the owners are even able to take this lockout "gamble", fans will come back no matter. It's too bad fans are swayed so easily. I would require more permanent freeze on ticket prices or a reduction for a couple years. Free preseason games could help, but so few regulars actually play in each game so it does little for me. The idea that they can even charge as much as they do for preseason tickets is an example of how broken this relationship between fans and owners has become, but fans have no voice because they don't demand it, they just sit around whining about it, no actions are taken. If they really want to make fans happy, give away tickets to a rivalry game like the Leafs and Habs! It would also help increase the Sens fans in the stadium that game. As for Tim, he may be good, he may not be, but I would expect a full interview process. I personally feel like he's more of a talent evaluator than the man in charge, but we'll see I guess. But I'd want the full process, not just blind loyalty from the owner. Alfie stuff should be a given. Any owner that tries to sell that as his giveback to the fans is complete bs. Alfie's earned it, this is what you do with anyone of his ilk. The dunk tank is cool, but again the sens do some events already around games. I'm not sure how much of a carnival feel they really want as the owners want you there for the hockey game and that's where they want your attention to be. Also, if the owners truly want to give back to fans, they'll agree to better revenue sharing so that the small market fans feel like their teams have a real shot at sustainability and not like they're being blackmailed every season. That's a start, but I think you can understand where I'm coming from. I'd want meaningful givebacks, not sparklers on my cake facades.

@sensnation I'm a half-season owner. They don't give away free tickets to season seat owners. I pay for them. I get your point about pleasing fans like me first though. This can still be done. They can make my tickets free, and give away the rest via lottery. I don't see why Tim Murray would be a bad replacement. He's proven to be knowledgeable, and fits with the "take care of our own" type of business environment I'd like to continue. This can go a long way for the culture of the Sens. The idea of a promotion is to ensure that the revenue pie doesn't shrink. A little sacrifice now can ensure that the Sens remain a part of the community going forward. The long-term success of the franchise is more important than a couple of million up front. I defended my points, but I feel you didn't offer any value-added with yours. If you've got better ideas, please present them. It's easy to try and cut up someones ideas, but it's harder to offer your own workable solutions.

@Chirp - Interesting read about Melnyk. Sounds almost like an owner that's being held hostage by the other owners and he'd just get a deal done to have the season start asap and avoid further damage to the industry. I just hope the other 22 owners who aren't part of the elite 8 or whatever it is start voicing their displeasure internally and get this thing moving for real! If they really want to make my day, remove this 8 vote thing and remove Bettman!

No offense but it really sounds bland and like you're just putting sprinklers on a cake to make it look flashier. As a fan the free preseason is a great step, but most of what I read would sound like rhetoric. Also, the way to get these free raffle tickets ignores the fact several season ticket holders already get some free preseason games, when obviously those should be the 1st people you'd want to make a concession to attract back. Also, just assuming Bryan wants to step down and then assuming Tim would be his best replacement would make me question your business and hockey sense. Finally if as an owner you spent all this time arguing over a few percentage points of revenue and now you're going to give away a good portion of those gains right out of the gate with a damaged product and industry. It's completely illogical, just like the entire lockout. Yes the owners need to pay fans back somehow, but this felt like complete lip service and bs, and flashing a lot of "suggestions" that are already assumed to be coming with or without the lockout.
