According to sportsnet only a 66 out of an 82 game schedule can be attained. At the end of the day, NHL owners and NHLPA are fighting over the fan's money. You mean to tell me that they can't decide how to allocate 3.3$Billion and you have the players crying "unfair" to an agreement. This is downright shameful. Don't players know that the average salary in Canada is about 45-50K annually, the average player makes 50 times that and to say the least is half or 1/3 as educated. From a Canadian hockey market, we "The fans" will come back, we may hold out in the short run but in the long term we live and breathe for the game and we will be back. I've been brought up on the game, I love the game, I breathe the game, there is no other sport in my mind that can compare to a game of hockey. I had so much pride to dawn my Sens jersey on every game day, I was proud to be a fan of the Sens and a fan of the league. The same can't be said true about the American hockey market, hockey is the 5th - 6th sport watched on American television. Bettman has developed his legacy of expanding hockey to the west coast, enhancing the game in the US, increasing revenues through television contracts and bettering the game with his rule changes. What happens when a third of your buildings in the NHL won't sell out anymore because you pist people off. Revenues begin to drop. The American hockey market won't be coming back. Well Mr.Bettman, I claim that your 20 year legacy will be destroyed, watch NBC back out of their agreement and watch some franchises that you fought so hard to keep disappear. You worked 20 years to grow the game and your destroying it in 1 season. Sorry for the long rant, I am so annoyed of this lockout.

I guess when you add an extra 0 on the end of your salary figure, you lose your rights to be treated fairly, right? Because hockey isn't a job for these guys, it's a game right? Even though, like most workers, they put in hours and hours of commitment to their team through practices, charity events, games... But I guess if you enjoy what you do, you shouldn't get paid too much for it, since work + fun = no no? These guys are living out their dreams but people too often forget this is all they have because they've invested so much time (literally their whole lives) into it. It sucks that there's no NHL, but they'll sort this out. Might as well support the other players in the OHL/AHL that are often over looked..

Found this comment on Facebook -- as she breathes a sigh of relief. "In the first season match against Rapperswil-Jona , which had to play without the sick NHL star Jason Spezza, the Lions had in the last nine minutes revealed 2-0 and still lost 2:3. This time, let burn the ZSC nothing more, it also brought the first goal from Michel Riesen (18), who met for the eighth time this season, not the concept." Going to put a 'negative' on this one also?

how old is lupul? wouldn't he be on an entry level deal before the last lockout? when he signed his next contract he and others get a big pay raise because they finally get the million+ $ contract. seems like a bad idea to use a guy on an entry level deal as an example. is this #nhl propaganda? It was more than Lupul that he referred to but salary increases of 300 & 400%? Sorry but that's just ridiculous. No wonder the NHL is in the mess it is now. The Owners are mostly to blame and the players are out of touch with reality. How do we find out if Spezza is hurt? Do the Sens deal with this arrogant idiot? Allan Walsh ‏@walsha Now, precious cap at risk, franchise values plummeting and NHLPA stronger than ever. Yup, job well done. ----------- I guess he is the NHLPA's mouthpiece. Sure it's great for the NHLPA for franchise values to plummet possibly reducing # of teams in the NHL and # of NHL players.

Although I don't agree with most of his articles there is one in the Ottawa Sun today from Steve Simmonds about the salaries of the NHL players since the lockout. He is using Leaf players as an example as that is what he knows best. This is just mindblowing the increases in salaries most of these players took. http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/10/25/dollars-and-sense-in-the-nhl As for Melnyk selling the Sens.. more Toronto centric media garbage. They don't know or care about anything outside of what is (in their minds) the borders of the centre of the hockey universe. It has been reported that those 3 offers of the NHLPA last week included salary INCREASES at the beginning. And they wonder why the NHL took 10 minutes to refuse them. So they are prepared to now lose 26% revenue in lost games to the end of November to save 13%. Sure makes sense to me. .. NOT.

This was never about "moving" the team. NHL would not allow it. I really doubt that. Never say never. Did the Jets also not move to Atlanta? While it's great that Eugene is intent on keeping the Sens here in Ottawa, I think it'd be wise for him to get a partner to inject more cash into the franchise. As much as we want to believe "winning" will bring in new fans, so will will marketing. And it seems to me that compared to the Canucks, Oilers, and Leafs, we are one of the less marketed teams in Canada. Of course, it doesn't offing help that the Leafs are owned by Bell/Rogers, so already we're kind of screwed since Leafs games are broadcast through tv/satellite/mo bile/rogers/tab let/etc. I just think it'd be great if the Sens had more exposure nationally, but it's very tough due to the situation/monop oly. It'd bring in more income, but I guess it's true that many sports teams owners don't actually make large profits from their clubs (unless you're MLSE/Lakers Group/Dallas Cowboys).

if the nhl considers players contracts must be honoured no matter the outcome and deductions then we could be far off a new deal. I dont think the NHL should be able to control already signed contracts and reduce them without breaking the agreement which is the contract. why does the NHL think they own the players rights if they are cutting salary to their liking? think about it, all of those over blown contracts will be reduced creating cap space just to allow GMs to sign more bad deals. it makes no sense. Owners, teams and GMs need to be held responsible for their own actions, signings and how many butts they put in the seats.

I actually once did a business project on the Sens about their coportate social responisbbility . It gave me an oppurtunity to look into some of their basic financials..... no in depth report on their profits , revenues and expenses...as obviously they're not Incorporated. However, from what I saw the team usually manages to break even near the end of season/begginin g of playoffs.( i.e ..expenses covered, but no profit). Now ,obviously this past season was very successful year from the business point of view ( and even hockey!)with about 13 mil in cap space, and selling out almost every home night. Now I may be just a young naive student, It wouldn't make sense for him to start looking for offers if the previous year was such a success..Im sure his financial team is making revenue projections based on this new rebuild..(consi dering losses in lockout and salary payroll increase as top end prospects eventually sign their major contracts). also what suprised me more was just how much the team / organization values being an integral part of contributing to the city's well being. Especially in youth. there's a very large amount of money ( easily upto $4mil) that the sens payoff in charities, research and benefits. At least from what i researched...Eu gene's the shiz!

At this point all the players are asking is for the owners to honor their contracts but the NHL just won't even consider it. Probably because they signed a ridiculous amount of long term contracts right before this CBA expired expecting them all to be 10-15% cheaper and now don't want to pay up. So again the owners screwed themselves. If they wouldn't have signed all those contracts, them honoring the contracts that wre already in place before August came along wouldn't have been nearly as expensive. The players are ok with 50-50 as long as its slowly brought there. If the NHL would honor the contracts, every year there would be contracts that expire and therefore would bring the percentage closer to 50-50 until enough old contracts are gone and they actually are at that even split. But the NHL insists on an imidiate 50-50 split because that means the players have to take a cut (aka the owners don't need to pay out 100% of the contracts they just signed). The NHL tries to say they've made consessions since this process began. However that's completely untrue. The only consessions they've made we're from they're origininal mind boggling offer of 43% for the players. So they think they lo good because they've come from 43% to 50%. I mean common. The sad part is that tons of fans now think the NHL are the good guys. Meanwhile the players haven't been offered a single good thing to make them consider taking a pay cut. If the owners maybe came to the players and said I'll give you this and this and therefore expect you to give back some salary maybe the players would play along. Instead the owners are saying you give me this, this and this and I give you nothing. This deal will never get done until the league either decides to honor the contracts or at least offer the players a little something in return

The statement of Melnyk working for his money is a little false Unfortunately Melnyk was a little dirty when it comes to making his money. Read his bio. That said he is a great guy who loves his team as well as the city. He is also Ukrainian like me and has donated millions to hospitals and the Ukrainian community in Toronto among other things. So I still have very much respect in him and believe him when he says he won't sell the team. I think it would be his absolute last resort. He may have lost a ton of money in his divorce but that doesn't mean he's bankrupt. Until he is I doubt he sell the Sens or any of his other beloved assets.

I think it would be great if Melnyk found an ownership partner. Clearly the organization's financial situation isn't ideal at the moment, but I highly doubt Melnyk is even close to considering selling the team. Right now, considering the Sens are still in the building stages, it isn't necessary to spend anywhere near the cap, but eventually, if ownership is serious about contending for the Stanley Cup, then they will have to be willing to big spenders. To compete for the Cup, teams have to be able to draft well, make savvy trades at the right times, and add key free agents. I want to see the Sens return to legitimate contenders in this league. I hope that Melnyk's goal isn't to just "survive" and hope that we can compete against the big spending teams.

"I am sure he would rather the build from within, and be long term viable rather than burn money on unproductive UFA's." I think it's more a "happy" confluence of the "right" way to do things and a lack of money. I think there was a natural purse tightening because of the situation the senators were in, but Melnyk has definitely had cashflow issues and those have translated to the organisation. If the senators were realistic stanley cup contenders we would see a small injection of cash I'm sure but not the major leap to be a spend to the cap team. Based on comments from friends who up until the lock out worked in the organisations as accountants Melnyk is not the happy billionaire spendaholic that he is sometimes painted out to be.
