Anderson Injured in Sens Win

Another night where the result on the ice was overshadowed by a scary injury to an Ottawa Senator.

The Sens came away with the win but the real story was Craig Anderson leaving the game with what the team is calling an ankle injury. Anderson had to be carried off the ice in the third period and could not put any weight on the leg. Anderson is considered "day to day".

Ben Bishop did the best he could in a tough spot but the Rangers tied and took the lead shortly after he arrived in the game. Hard to really fault him on either goal but you could tell the Sens were a little bit shell shocked after Anderson went down.

But give the Senators credit. They refused to roll over and die. Not long after the Rangers took the lead, Mika Zibanejad drew the Sens even with a great finish from in close on the power play.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the final minutes of regulation and in overtime but Lundqvist and Bishop stood tall.  Ben Bishop was solid in the shootout and Kaspars Daugavins scored the shootout winner and the Senators picked up another crucial two points.

You have to love the fight this team is showing right now.

Jakob Silfverberg, who has looked better and better with each passing game, scored the other Ottawa goal as he roofed a vicious backhand over the glove of Henrik Lundqvist. This was certainly SIlfverberg's best game of the season.

You obviously don't want to speculate but watching Craig Anderson get carried off the ice you can't help but think the worst. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to hear more on the severity but the fact that it's his ankle and not knee has to be considered good news. The "day to day" diagnosis is promising too.

In the meantime, the Senators will likely recall the red hot Robin Lehner from Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

The Senators now get set for a Saturday night rematch with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Place.

So impressed! The Binghamton Senators weren't the best team in the AHL for nothing! These guys are winners. let Andy get better, Robin and Ben will carry the mail for awhile NO PROBLEM! Hell if the Sens had a full lineup we might be the best team in the East. The Stache is learning valuable info on the players in our system. Grant and Dziurzynski are keepers. size kills and right now the Sens are a big team! How bout Zibby now Tookie, I loved his effort all night!

This team is seriously amazing. On paper, after all these injuries, nobody expects them to do very much or go anywhere but down. Hell. people on here have crapped on them the moment Spezza was down and out. They are resilient and playing there asses off, and it's paying off.

Even better, Alfie looks like he is having fun out there. He's smiling and has this look like he's possessed by the hockey gods.

Here's hoping Anderson's injury is nothing major and has a quick return to his throne in net. Until then, keep this train going as it is.

Great game.

What an emotional win by the boys! My heart was racing. Was yours? They really came through tonight. It's great to see that the "never let die" mentality hasn't changed from last season. That's three wins in a row. Go Sens!

"another 2 pts. #bish stood tall - hard place to come in the game. Love the #alfie save in the 1st! My ankle's gonna be ok, be back ASAP." from Craig Anderson's twitter account (credit to SC for the retweet).
I have to imagine 3 wins straight is putting the wind back in the sails of this team, I'm sure spirits were low after Karlsson went down but being able to prove they can win without him must be encouraging.
Throw in the natural competitive nature of playing rivals in the Leafs and the Habs, I can totally see them winning the next two in gritty fashion as well.

I am extremely impressed with Dziurzynski.

He's massive and has wheels for days. He also loves to hit which is something we can't say for our other massive fast guy (Greening). He seems to be the perfect guy for a bottom 6 role.

Silfverberg and Zibanejad had their best night of their young NHL careers.

However I've noticed DaCost is starting to slow down. Tonight as well as last game he hasn't had the puck on his stick as much. Doesn't seem to be involved in the game anymore.I'm his biggest fan but I think he may need a night or two in the press box. Wouldn't be a bad idea to throw in an eager O'Brien

Also...I can't wait to see Methot in the playoffs. Whether its this year or not, the guy is an absolute beast. His style of play is simply ideal for the playoffs. He's just gonna go out there and crush everyone in sight.

I know people hate on him, but Phillips is the same way. He's a beast who works his ass off. And always takes it to the next level in the post season

i thought the same about DaCosta, except the guy only got 6:18 of ice time - obviously the coach was more into matching lines tonight than anything - playoff style matchup.

silfverberg - moronic 8 shots on net
methot and dziurzynski: beast like 7 hits with some pretty crunching ones. that is the most of any player on the both teams - BY A LONG SHOT.

honorable mention: mika with 4 hits, 4 shots.

So much emotion tearing through me even as I write this. ok.
First off...Sens win. Yeah!

Secondly...I am so torn with my emotion with how it can be possible that this much damange can be done to one team in 18 games. Top line centre, best d-man in the league..and then...what happened to Andy tonight.

I will break for a minute...I appreciate and love this website...I view it daily and enjoy the feedback and comments from all. That said...I am going to skip this site for the next few days because I dont think I can stomach the inevitable...wh ich is some people drowning this blog with comments about "tanking", high picks...and basically video game fans taking over the discussion.

I for one..am in mourning over what has happened to my team to date.

Cheers to all you real Sens fans. I will talk to you in the coming days. But I def. need some time.

Looking at the Sens defensively and the goaltending situation, they are definitely in a league of their own right now compared to the rest of the league, if they could get the offence going they could be a dark horse come playoff time even without Cowan and Karlsson.

Makes you wonder if Murray might take a chance and use their 1st pick come the trade deadline!!

Prior to the Anderson incident, I had one key thought about the game: Alfie was a forward during 5 on 5, a defensemen on the PP and a part-time goalie. Probably 1 st player to do all three in a single game!

Hope Andy's OK.

Final thought: while I have seen many games over the years with poor officiating, never have I seen an entire season when not only is it bad and inconsistent but it's down right wrong and incompetent.

He really is an asshole. The Rangers should be the team to beat in the east based on their roster, but it seems like they just don't want to play for him and i don't blame them.

He goes to the butterfly because he is so huge and most of the time gets the puck but his glove side has been nothing but brutal since we acquired him. A game like this where he comes in and almost loses the game for us. Sure he did well in the shoot out but sorry I can't go based on that. He is a great back up. Will never be a star in this league. Hey Chirp,

MacLean has to go with Bishop,as he has performed well in last 2 games he played.
Both games resulted in wins !!

Last night, he was forced to replace Anderson, and Bishop was really "cold" as Denis Potvin said.

Starting Robin Lehner, would be somewhat
showing Bishop, that the team has lack of faith, in his abilities to perform well !

Sure Rangers took a 2-1 lead, but Ottawa was shocked after Anderson was injured.
They found a way to regroup and overcome the loss of Anderson.

Give the guy a break, do you know how hard it is for a goaltender to go in halfway of the 3rd period cold, with no warmup shots? Add the fact that Anderson was playing well. It's not like anyone expected Bishop to takeover. Give your head a shake, because once Bishop got his groove, he kicked ass.

Last night sitting first row behind the Rangers net right beside the zamboni entrance were the best seats i've sat in at scotiabank place. Usually sitting first row sucks because of the glass obstructing your view but it was not the case sitting behind the net. The only obstruction was Lunqdvist's fat head blocking my view. I had the best seat in the place to watch Silfverberg and Zibanejad's goals. And the shootout from behind the rangers net was awesome having them come in at me.
It was definitely a great game for Silfverberg. I complained a bit about Greening not shooting yesterday, so it was good to see him take 3 shots and have 3 hits this game. Zibanejad also with 4 shots and 4 hits played much much better. Dziurzynski looks like he's here to stay, he's playing great. I heard his story on the radio yesterday that he wasn't even drafted and didn't play college or major junior. He was just playing tier 2 junior and was given a tryout with Binghampton and made the team.

Personally, I would start Bishop on saturday as his play of late shows that he belongs and deserves a shot at being the #1 goalie, as long as he wins keep playing him. If he loses than go with Lehner the following game and go with the goalie that wins you games and hope one of them can go on a hot streak and keep the Sens in a playoff position until the trade deadline and Spezza gets back in early April.

Big Ben deserves a back to back.

He's a chance for Ottawa to showcase his skills and if the guy can't carry a decent workload, we'll not get a 2nd or even possibly a 1st for him unless we do. I'm really cheering for him to carry Andy's torch; increase his value; or set the stage for a Anderson trade if the team slips out of playoff contention.

It would probably be a lot uglier in here this morning if zibby wouldn't of tied it up...but I'm glad all the fans came out on a positive note considering the loss of andy.

silf beats brodeur AND lundquivst with that shot of his....how many NHL vets can brag about that??? now he needs spezza to dish out some setups and figure out how to get closer to the net to unleash so damage. He still shoots a little far away...but i'm hoping he adjusts shortly.

If Anderson was 35-36 years of age than yes I would consider trading him but the fact that he is only 31 years of age and likely has at least 5 years of hockey left in him and is playing like one of the best goalies in the league right now i'm not sure why we would even consider trading him. Anderson is a goalie that could single handly win us a playoff round or two and easily take us to the Stanley Cup finals.

He sure did not let me down last year in the playoffs against the NYR.

Would be crazy to trade one of the best goalies in the league right now.

Also after games I dont go rushing straight to this blog, sorry SC, we go drinking, Heart & Crown for the win!

Even the Leafs fans are starting to feel for us. I think we are due to meet them in the playoffs again and get this rivalry back on track.

01. Alfie - can we say enough about him. Great save, great energy, great jump! Love to see his shaggy smile!
02. Smith - doesn't score, but the heart and soul this guy pours into each game... contagious and fun to watch!
03. Methot - great trade - this guy is a monster and hits hard!
04. Phillips - is sneaking out of the shadows more often - great hits last night
05. Sweden - Thank you for Zibby, Silf and Alfie
06. Silf - I'm starting to get whiplash trying to follow his shots!

Side note - Andy get better
Side note - to all the Big Ben haters, he will show you and the Leafs what he's made of

I agree with this, Bishop has earned this start and Mac knows that, luv Lehner and all but he'll get another game down the road.

Also did anyone notice after comments here were made regarding Smith not getting PP time and lacking OFF and that I said he should be on the PP and to give him more OFF.

He was on the PP last night (2nd unit) and they end up scoring (Zib). Smith also played much better OFF last night, he doesnt need to shut down people, our D and goalie can do that on their own.

I think someone on the SENS staff must read this blog.

Lehner's time will come but Bishop gets over looked on this team by everyone, it's his time to shine. Show us what you can do Ben!

Not saying I would but I can only imagine what the return could be for the best goalie in the league. The Sens could get a wicked return. + we still have Bishop and Lehner.

But this only occurs when you lose, as long as we keep playing over .500, Anderson doesnt go anywhere.

Give yourself a big hug and tug; didn't you say you'd sit Smith? Yep you sure did. Now he doesn't have to play defense? Lets just have the forwards sit at the opposing teams blue line and have the defense ring the puck around the boards and out.

Your lack of common sense is showing in every diarrhetic post. Your hockey ignorance is fun.

Carolina is 3rd in the east with 17 points they shouldn't even be in the playoffs but because their whole division sucks balls they get to be 3rd bullshit! I think if your first in your division it should just guarantee that team a top 8 position, Carolina does not deserve 3rd place and neither did Florida last year.

I was one of the ones harping on Smith yesterday, more so than Tookie I believe

I agreed he probably had one of his better games last night, especially in the offensive zone

I still stand by my comments that a 3LC needs to score goals. Not saying he is playing bad but he needs to generate offense

Simple reason: If he is generating chances (Like last night) then who ever he is "shutting down" doesn't have the puck

Id much rather an offensive Smith than defensive Smith, because that simply means we have the puck and not the opposing top lines

That being said, when goals are hard to come by, we need everyone chipping in regardless of roll. Phillips is ultimate stay at home dman, and he still manages every once in a while to chip in here and there

Also, now that I think about it, Dacosta skillset is more suited for a top 6 role, which is occupied by turris and zbad, and Grant, Smith, JOB are better suited for the bottom 6 lines.

This way Dacosta can goto Bingo and be a leader with alot of icetime.

I agree the injuries dont compare at all, but every team has them, its part of hockey, although the hockey Gods are mad at us for some reason?!?!

We have been VERY fortunate to have Anderson play healthy this far, without him you have to admit we wouldnt be in this situation. Now he's out, dont know how long but that I think will be our FINAL test, if we can stay .500 with BB and Lehner then we are def gonna make noise in the playoffs with or without our stars.

The Leafs and Habs are playing very well, they are scoring and playing good defensively. Habs have Price as well, Leafs not so much with Scrivens, although he has been playing well.

Another great effort, big plays, big hits, much deserved win.

Silverberg did what I predicted he would yesterday, coming up big with that shorty. That no look top shelf was something else!! I also predicted Turris to have a big game. While he didn't hit the score-sheet, he did play balls out all night, so did Alfie.

Anderson going down made me throw up a little in my mouth. I guess back luck comes in more than just 3's, look at how many of our top players are out!! Anyway, Bishop and Lehner will hold the fort. Now the debate will be, who plays the next game? I can see that being the big discussion going forward.

And I won't forget to mention Zibanejad. He needed that goal something awful and it couldn't have come at a better time.

Anyone see the Deal Don Cherry's in Kanata is offering? $60 for a ticket and drive to and from. $80+ dollar value I guess.

Gryba's clearing breakdowns are puck control issues. Rather than sweep or chip at a puck he needs to momentarily control it before he gets rid of it. Especially on the PK. However he is playing against the oppositions top line..initiatio n by fire I guess.
