Senators Recall Gryba, Grant, Dziurzynski

(UPDATE 9:59 AM)-  Apparently Gryba was only the beginning.  With some injury issues up front, the Senators have also recalled Derek Grant and David Dziursynski from the Binghamton Senators.  Doesn't leave much down on the farm but a great chance for the kids to show what they can do.  Practice at 11:00 AM at SBP.

With Erik Karlsson expected to miss the next 3-4 months, the Ottawa Senators are turning to another Eric for a little help.

This morning, Head Coach Paul MacLean announced that the team has recalled defenceman Eric Gryba from Binghamton of the American Hockey League.  Gryba is having a terrific season, appearing in 38 games, racking up 11 points, and registering a team best +28 plus minus rating.

The move means the Sens now have 7 defenceman on the roster as Gryba joins Marc Methot, Sergei Gonchar, Mike Lundin, Chris Phillips, Andre Benoit and Patrick Wiercioch.

We'll see what Paul MacLean has in mind for defence pairings when the Sens hit the ice for practice at 11:00 AM this morning.  Will have another update after that skate.

True. If Scrivens has to be the 1st star every night, they are in trouble.

I think Benoit played his last game for a litlle while.

Why? Because he didn't score? He singlehandedly lost the game?

He didn't have a good game at all tonight I thought. He has to prove that McClean did the right choice to sit Wiercoch and that was not the case in my opinion tonight. Also, you want to give youngsters ice time.

Considering the outcome, I didn't think has was that bad. Switching him out that game would not have made any difference.

Highly doubt the Sens make a trade, they will ride it out till the end and if Murray can improve the team for the future, he will but i say they keep it as is and get an awesome pick.

Honestly, I guess I'll have jump onto that wagon, cause I don't think there's a move out there to save us at this point.

Ottawa looked OK tonight, but thats just because toronto played very very poorly. The next few weeks are going to be UGLY

I really want the Senators to draft Anthony Mantha

he's the CHL leading goal scorer, 2nd in points, 6foot4 and only ranked 16th for some reason. I guess it doesn't pay to be bigger and score more points...

ill continue to push for him as our pick til draft day I guess

I think Ottawa should and will make a trade or two... considering there are a few great players that a apparently on the trade block it only makes sense.

Players that are said to be available that I would consider moving for depending on price...

Ryan O'Reilly, Kieth Yandle, Mark Striet, Corey Perry (Dream), Derick Brassard, Jay-Bo to name a few...

Zibanejad has totally disappeared. Looked great his first few games. Looks really slow like he is in cement. The newbies looked good though. Need to trade Gonchar asap. He is not helping us. I'd take a 2nd rounder for him.

Well I thought we played decent tonight, we outshot them and had some great chances.

Dacosta was our best player on the ice again.

29 games left and from what I gathered about 5 games till the deadline.

Silverburg Dacosta and Turris sure gave their all tonight with nothing to show for it.

DaCosta has been the best player on the team (outside of Karlsson when healthy) since he was brought up.

Too bad he doesn't have more points to show for it because he creates tons of chances

Not sure what game Floridasensfan was watching but it Silfverberg spent most of his minutes on the ice. The guy gets pushed off the puck so easily. I expect more from Turris. Perimeter shots ain't going to cut it in this league. The man needs to take the puck to the net here and there. I will agree that DeCosta was and has been one of our best forwards. The idiots calling into the team are always talking about his skating as a negative, I think he flies when he's on the ice. Loved seeing Smith lay out Kessel. The three rooks has a decent first game. I could see Gryba getting a full time gig in the bigs. It's going to be a looooooooooong season.

I don't mind a reasonable amount of losses as long as there is an obvious demonstration of effort and some amount of skill on show. With Clouston and Hartsburg there were simply too many "lazy" losses for it to be tolerable. It got a bit depressing. I don't expect that these players will do that to MacLean.

Forget Mantha, I want Mackinnon. Sens played pretty well but they couldn't bury one. DaCosta by far the best player out there. Alfie made some bad decisions. Silfverberg seems to be lacking a step. If you're going to make an offer for Perry maybe Silfverberg is one of the big pieces u include he has value right now. Grant and Dziurzynski looked great. Zack Smith will he ever score again? If Sens make a trade lets clear out some guys. Cuz when Hoffman and Stone recover they'll be with the big team. Go SensGo!

First of all to clear things up MARK STREIT IS NOT ON THE TRADING BLOCK. The islanders just signed him to a big contract and they are going to keep him for a long time. However that doesn't mean that The islanders won't trade him if offered the right pieces. Second why are people trying to trade for defense right now? From Jay bo to Yandle. Our defense is 5 times better than our offense right now. If anything trade to bolster our offense. Todays game proves how our offense is the problem (no goals) not our defense.

I did not see the entire game... but from the stats they did not get outshot badly.

There are players playing higher in the lineup than they should and they are not be 'hidden' among vets == like Kadri is in Toronto -- and Courturier in Philly.

This team had trouble scoring with Karlsson in the lineup

The best player at the draft is Seth Jones. Big defensemen like him who are very good are harder to find than forwards...

By next weekend Michalek & Regin should be back... but not sure how they help.. they were not doing too much before they got injured.. but it's experience... which the Sens did not ice a lot of this game.

IF the Leafs are supposed to be this great team... they should have buried the Sens with more than 5 goals..

In all honesty, if the Sens were to win the lottery, I'd entertain trading that pick if the right offer was available.

When you consider the number of prospects in the system and the amount of time it takes for a newly drafted player to be an impact player in the NHL, you could potentially move that pick for an established elite player.

Please no deal. Call me crazy but I've liked our play of the last couple of weeks. I know we're missing the net but we controlled a lot of the play against TO tonight. A little luck and we could have one that game.
They could barely handle our team of Grizzly veterans (Alfie, Phillips, and Gonchar), 3rd/4th liners (Condra, O'Brian, Lundin, etc) and AHL (the rest).
I love the experience we're getting

If the boys keeps working their ass off like last night, they will win their share of games. Can't be that unlucky all the time. Alfie with a post again and a real good scoring chance from Condra.

Sens must realize the ugly goals the Leafs got last night was right in the slot. We mostly got our chances from the outside and it's tough to get goal from there if your name is not Stamkos.

Ya maybe now we can keep gryba and trade Phillips... exactly like we should have done 2 seasons ago. Phillips is garbage. He gives opponents all the time and space they need and he surrenders the blue line every single night

Phillips actually let's the other team cross the blue line on purpose! Its part of his weak as fuck game plan.

People must understand that in that Calder Cup run the two big snipers are NOT with the organization..K eller...Ptotulm y. With the proper drills, attention to technique and repetition scoring can be improved. It is not purely natural , it is perception and muscle memory, Somebody tell Turris to do something other than shoot from 40fr and have it defelct off the oppositions stick.

Gryba will be with the team for the rest of the year. He is not on an entry level contract and there is no way he would clear waivers, he would be scooped up by any number of teams. If anyone goes down, it's Wiercoch as he doesn't have to clear waivers.

I never said Silverburg was successful I say he was trying and skating hard. Silverburg is a sniper with a quick shot, he has a ton of pressure on him to perform even if self inflicted, also obviously adjusting to the physical play of the NHL.
Silverburg is the real deal, give him at least this season to adjust
Everyone is just getting their feet wet this year, way more rookies than last year.

We played decent being we played with a fair bit of panic and gripped our sticks hard.

Swagger is a big thing we are missing with Spezza Karlsson out and it is contagious.

+2 #327 MethotToMyMadness 2013-02-17 10:12
My observations from last night. Leafs didn't have control of the game as much as they would have liked, but that's a testament to how the Sens are playing. However, we had far too many turnovers, players falling down, or simply trying to skate faster than they can, causing them to trip forward. Zib has been doing that at least twice a game. It's a clear sign how much faster the NHL game is. Those things will get corrected with time.

While the shots were in Ottawa's favour, we didn't have more quality chances than the Leafs. Too many shots from outside, without traffic In front. And if there was traffic it was the Leafs who were blocking shots with skates, legs or sticks. Reminded me of a playoff game trying to preserve the lead.

Also the Leafs very aggresive penalty kill was too much for the Sens without Spezza or EK there to control the tempo. Sens couldn't get setup, and when they got to a lane, it was always to a Defense who's receiving on the backhand.

Continued...

We are now 4 games and over 20 attempts at the PP without a goal. If they cannot correct it, we won't be winning many games. The NHL these days is a special teams league. Until this is corrected us Fans will continue to write and complain.

I truely believe the Sens will start scoring again, but why or why must we continue to push up the ice, slide back to a Wing and then try this toe drag wrister 15 times a game? They almost always get deflected off the defenders stick up into the mesh. It's getting frustrating beyond belief.

I just think too much has happened in too short of a time with injuries and players getting inserted and adjusted. We are snake bitten, players know it and its spread through the team. Once they get that even strength and then a pp goal, they will start rolling again. But until then players will keep gripping the sticks too hard.

And How many consecutive posts has Alfie hit now on the power play?

A college player usually won’t play his first pro game until he’s at least 22, at which point he’ll get at most three years of exemption (if he goes to the AHL) and at least one year of exemption (if he jumps straight to the NHL). College players are for this reason usually the oldest to still have any exemption left.
He can go down!

Silfverberg has played 15 NHL games. I would give him more time to adjust.

The young players are getting NHL experience which will help down the road.

The 3 young players playing their 1st NHL game at the ACC.. I'm sure they were very nervous.

Gryba is big and hits and almost scored in the first period. I think he is kept up.. unless Bingo really needs him.

They lost again last night 5-2. Lehner in net. I'm not too sure how long Lawson is out.. because Cheverie was the backup.

Need an update from TIMWRX.

Sens play NJ tomorrow afternoon.. I hope in a half empty arena the young guys will feel more comfortable..si nce their 1st game is out of the way..

I don't think there is anything wrong with Silfverberg or Zibanejad. They are both playing tough minutes and learning fast. Silfverberg in particular has adjusted tremendously and is winning far more battles/anticip ating play much better.

However, the organization should consider sending them both down to Bingo for a week or two at some point if they still aren't producing and need a little shot of confidence. Same thing we did with Karlsson. It will get pretty draining in Ottawa if we just continuously lose all the time - which frankly we are expected to do.

I wouldn't suggest this because they're playing badly - they aren't. Just in the interest of protecting their development.

Not sure what game you were at. Gryba was solid as was Methot. Gonchar and Benoit were weak on the puck and not impressive at all considering they were the offensive players. You will be out of position at times due to the flow. Cant stand around and wait for them to come to you. Both goals were a fluke. Coach Mac disagrees with you "Gryba was real solid"

I don't know what game u were at cuz Benoit made the best defensive play of the night when he broke up the 2 on 1. Then he rushed up the ice and just missed on our 3 on 1. Gryba was solid also cuz the 2 Maple Laugh goals were fluky at best. 2nd one had it have been the Sens scoring it would've been disallowed.

When you step up to make a hit it puts you out of "position" 90% of the time. Its your team that covers you. Its the price you pay for physicality. Otherwise you would wait for your opposition to skate into you and thay doesnt usually happen.

Thoughts and predictions on tonights game? I have a bad feeling but I want to say we win 2-1 maybe 3-1 with an empty netter if they pull their goalie. Kov or Clarkson scores the first goal and Mac lets them know they need to step it the fuck up.

Reason: Andy is due to enter #BeastMode. The players gain some confidence from some big stops and the empty home arena. Da Costa gets Sens first goal. Someone on D gets the game winner. Then if goalie is pulled Turris or Silfver get it.
