Game Day-Bishop Starts vs. Jets

On the heels of a disappointing overtime loss at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Senators are back in action when they host the Winnipeg Jets in an afternoon affair.

Despite Thursday night's loss, the Sens were able to pick up a single point, something they have managed to do in every home game so far this season. Paul MacLean's team will be looking for a couple points this time around with the 11th place Jets in town.

Much like last year, the Jets seem to be a different team on home ice. Winnipeg has posted an impressive 3-2-0 record at the MTS Centre but have struggled on the road, going 1-3-1 thus far. The Jets give up a ton of goals (only the Sabres and Caps give up more per game) so the Senators will want to jump on them early.

The Jets have lost four of their last five, giving up 23 goals along the way.

Mark Borowiecki was returned to Binghamton yesterday leaving the Sens with seven healthy defenceman.  Patrick Wiercioch draws back into the line up while Andre Benoit sits.  Kaspars Daugavins is also back in, while Jim O'Brien takes a turn in the press box.

No morning skate for the Sens this morning but here is how they are expected to line up

Zibanejad-Turris-Alfredsson
Michalek-Smith-Silfverberg
Greening-Regin-Neil
Daugavins-Da Costa-Condra

Methot-Karlsson
Lundin-Gonchar
Wiercioch-Phillips

Ben Bishop will make just his second start of the season for the Senators.  Craig Anderson has played a ton of hockey lately and the the Sens want to be careful about overworking him.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 2:00 PM with the game available on CBC and on the radio at the Team 1200.

Andy needs some rest, glad to see Bishop get the start, looks like it will be against their backup so fair game.

I am a bit glad it is a 2:00pm start, don't have to wait so long for the game.

Hoping for a big game from the senators, I'm feeling lucky about a 4-1 win again!

Someone mentioned a few days ago about a Senschirp app, is this something that would be possible for iOS and android? The site operates okay through the browser, but I think an app would be awesome.

bishop could not have got a better game than this.

I think O'Brien is sitting due to the clog-up at centre. don't know if it is that sound of a strategy though considering he is used on PK - but then again questionable faceoff performance by O'Brien doesnt help either.

Benoit decision is weird....maybe PW46s parents are attending too lol?

I don't understand what Mac is doing.

Jim O'Brien busts his ass off every shift and is playing just fine. If you're going to scratch anyone in the lineup, scratch friggin Milan Michalek, who looks like he doesn't even want to compete on this team.

And why Ben Bishop? Ride Andy. He's the best goalie in the league. We have back to back games next week- the perfect time to play Bishop then. And honestly, Andy doesn't mind. Shit- he could probably play the entire season.

Sheesh.

WIorcioch is part of the future let him play. Let Michalek get going hell he scored 35 last year. It'll happen soon, go 9MM, net one today. Really hope Da Costa gets more ice love watching him play, so slick.

Agreed. He's playing just fine. I don't understand. With guys like Regin, Michalek struggling... this doesn't make any sense.

He may not have the dangles of Alex Ovechkin, but JOB busts his ass off as much as anyone else on the team. Sit freakin Michalek. The guy barely moves his feet.
Quote

-1 #20 jasonontheoldsenschirp 2013-02-09 13:58
The only reason as to why Michalek isn't being stratched is because he is trade bait in a potential move with some value, so if they scratch him, it wouldn't look very good to other teams.

That has to be it. Because his play is speaking for itself. He has been dreadful to watch.

seriously guys some of you are the most cranky fans ever. yes you have the right to like or not like the coaches decision sometimes. but there is a very very good reason you were not auditioning for the coaches job and he was when it was available. and then there is an even better reason he got it amongst whoever else tried. so yes dislike the decisions or like them but dont lose your trust in the coach and gm and go beyond the boundaries of reality by trashing players, making general sweeping statements about them and then jumping off into trade rumors. honestly it just burns comment space over here and does not make it for an involving read. maybe the reason he sat Jimmy could be as simple as O'Brien just not doing something the coach really wanted or maybe he needs a game off or something. and just maybe Michalek is doing everything the coach wants him to and maybe his goals are not what the coahc is bent upon.

so with his injury and DaCosta's increased performance, additional minutes and now praise from the coach - time is up Mr.Regin. unless for some fans on this board he somehow mysteriously outplays Michalek.

i think DaCosta will be very very interesting to watch on the 2C role. if he can use his strengths, especially his stick and vision skills he could be very very valuable to the sens.

But Karlsson can't do it by himself. He needs offensive help.

It's one game. Last game when we had offense, you were all "damn we got skillz". Today we decided to pick on michalek and even the coach to a certain extent.

I'm not saying that we should be happy with today, but it's part of the game. One team has to lose. Sometimes it's going to be us..and that's just how it is. That's why it's the best hockey league in the world. We can constantly throw michalek under the buss, but for a guy whose used to playing with spez and getting into scoring positions it's going to take time to adapt. Last year, every one was on the michalek bandwagon. Remember when the lockout got over, and when michalek heard the news , he stopped his team bus in the middle of nowehere and took a flight back to ottawa asap.he's motivated.

If we want to be a unique as a fanbase, let's do it positively, and give the support to everyone on the team instead of tearing new assholes into them. We DONT suck on a nightly basis, so why act like leaf fans?

Must be new around here if you think everyone was on the Michalek bandwagon last year.

I don't hate him as much as some, but think we really should have moved him in the off season, that was his career year.

He is kind of the opposite of Spezza...he needs the WAY better player(play maker) to make him look as good as he does...Spezza needs the finisher to put away the plays he makes that nobody ever expects him to be able to make.

I'm in the mood to play GM this morning

1) We trade Michalek to Edmonton for Paajarvi -brings us a good young player and gives Edmonton a good experienced player who plays both ways(Paajarvi a left hand shot which we need).

2) We offer Greening and Condra plus a second pick or our first for Ryan O'Reilly( plus a 3rd or 4th pick if we have to give our first instead of the second). they need forwards and they get two here.

3) Then we trade Bishop for a good second round pick.

Ok then the line up is set once Spezza-Stone-an d Hoffman are back.

Paajarvi-Spezza-TUrris
Alfie-O'Reilly-Silfverberg
Hoffman-Zibby-Stone
O'Brien-Smith-Neil

Only one guy playing off wing anD that's Alfie -and he likes to attack the net from the left.

TUrris as I've said before is a sniper and IMO would be a better winger.

-2 #164 jakester 2013-02-10 10:06
We would have 2second round picks this year plus either two thirds or two fourths. Then at the deadline we move Gonchar for a first(if a dimwit team overpays) or for sure a second rounder. So we would have 3 second rounders -we could package two for a mid to late first rounder. In the end we wouldn't be in bad shape. No use hanging on to Gonchar like we did with Kuba last year. IMO that was a mistake.

One point to make is that the Sens don't have a 2nd rd pick this upcoming draft that went for Bishop.

I don't want Murray to make any rash trades or signings.

The Sens have lost 4 regulation losses. 3 have been by 1 goal the other by 2 goals. They are not being blown out of the rink.

Bishop played a great game yesterday the rest of the team downright stunk. Other than the Carolina road game that was the worse I have seen this team this season & they lost by 1 freakin' goal.

We don't know if the Sens make the playoffs this season. The loss of Spezza is huge & Karlsson can't carry this team by himself. And yes Michalek has to be better so does Greening. Condra is not a goal scorer, guys, he is there for his defensive skills.

What I want is the Sens to give Gryba a shot. They need someone who hits. Neil didn't even lay a hard hit yesterday something they could have woken up this team.

I'm all for the acquisition you have in mind but you need to be shot in the face for offering so much in return. Paajarvi is a reclamation project at this point he has nowhere near the value he might have commanded when he was first drafted.

Jake is intriguing with his trade proposals. Michalek is probably not going to hit an obscene shooting percentage like last year. Pajaarvi may just need a change of scenery with all the young kids in Ed-Mo taking room.

Now really looking to part with Condra though, kid has stamina in spades...if we don't beat the crappy Sabres or the underachieving Penguins (2-2 at home whatta joke...) then panic button needs to be taken out of the emergecy glass...

Our division is going to be a lot tighter this year. People need to take off the rose coloured glasses and just take a look.

Shit on the Habs all you want, but they still have Subban, Price, and Pacioretty...
The Leafs aren't too great this year, but JVR is proving to be an elite forward (they're now ahead of us in the standings and they dont even have Lupul)...
The B's are the same old hard to play team, except they somehow got even better with the addition of Hamilton...
The Sabres have a hot forward in Vanek, and Hodgson is coming into form, and they have a bonafide no.1 in Miller as usual.

My prediction is that we will probably make it into the playoffs, but it's not going to be a cake walk. We're getting in on the 6-8th seed. But once we're in, it's fair game, and we've given ourselves a shot to win it... This team is still rebuilding. And to say that a team in the rebuild got into the playoffs in each YEAR of the rebuild, is phenomenal.

seriously - for a team that is what 6th in the east right now people here want to make trades?
they are a win streak away from shutting the fickle ones.

sens have good D and they have fixed goaltending - most losses are by 1 goal margins and the sens have yet to allow more than 2 goals in regulation outside of the tampa loss + the win against buffalo.

the homestand is at 1-1-1, they need to win the next one to make it 5 points out of 8 which would be acceptable.

scoring: spezza missing has thrown a wrench into everything - but its reminded us that this is still a rebuild. its also shown who really belongs (Regin) and who should be given a chance (DaCosta, Zib). Sens have depth in prospects in every aspect. I think the front end will work once PM figures out the right line combos.

one thing sens need to do is start getting more physical and nasty. sens have latent toughness, but they need to exert - esp. in their own crease.
Quote

+2 #174 hq8 2013-02-10 14:18
also - yesterday's game is not one you make judgements on when the whole team as a collective did not show up. Karlsson will have off games - he cant be that perfect - he is pretty close to it though. even Maclean was fine with his game yesterday. with the way the sens played a 1-0 loss is still surprising.

simple fact is that the sens have become a little cute in their own crease and the other team's crease too. that needs to change.

Let's just keep going to war with 2 checking lines and a top six that has maybe 3 real players in it. Murray can sacrifice a bit of what we have now. We have Greenings,Condr a's even Smith's in spades in Bingo. We have 3 1st round picks still playing in Junior. Murray can go get two quality players like I proposed earlier and we'd be in business. You put TUrris on Spezza's wing when he gets back and you don't need Bobby Ryan. The money works Michalek,Greeni ng, and Condra(or someone else if you love him so much) out(about 7million) O'Reilly and Paajarvi in about 7 Million. Paajarvi is going to be one hell of a player - he's just lost in the shuffle in Edmonton. Bring him to Swedawa and he'll blossom. Roarrrrr u keep watching hockey like yesterday if u want but Ottawa deserves more.

Oh and Sandy I agree Gryba deserves a serious look he's dominant in the AHL. He's better than Boro and Benoit for sure.

And a rebuild doesn't mean that you just keep acquiring assets and stockpiling. you have to make moves like the TUrris move last year. You can't have 50 guys on the team so at some point use your pawns to acquire a bigger piece.

What I want is the Sens to give Gryba a shot. They need someone who hits. Neil didn't even lay a hard hit yesterday something they could have woken up this team.

Bang on Sand-E. Gryb-Ah is a Mucks pick so Murray would take a long, long time to play him over his own guys, that's how NHL politics go...

Tookieis100%Right OUT!

Gryba leads the AHL in +/- with 26. He is having a very good season. Why not bring him up... I know GMs favour their own picks to others... but you also have to be fair..

to say that BM favors his own picks is just incorrect. Jim O'Brien is a muckler 1st round pick from 2007. Gryba will get his chance, the murrays are not slouches at prospect development and advancement. not to mention they handed Brian Lee chance after chance.

Actually O'brien was a Murray pick...he drafted him about 10 days after becoming GM. He was his first pick as a GM actually. It's no secret he favours his own picks, just look at Lee...

Yes Murray drafted O'Brien but with Muckler's scouting staff. He did not have time to replace them... and their record during Muckler's time as GM was not very good.

Guess who was also drafted by Muckler and also got lots of opportunities with Murray. Foligno, Daugavins and Condra. In fact those three were in the same draft as Gryba so anyone who says that BM is favouring certain players because they are his picks is an idiot. Would you say the same thing about Karlsson? About Cowen? BM puts the players that he thinks deserves to be in the lineup in the lineup. Another thing, it is not necessarily BM keeping Gryba out of Ottawa. It might be the Paulrus.

HHAHAHAHA Lee?!?!?! REALLY, handed chance after chance?!?! You try playing a sport at a high level like that once a week, with a different partner half of the time and see how well you do....if anything we killed his career. I hope I am wrong for his sake.

That was an absolutely horrible trade.

That crappy player Paajarvi scored A short handed goal today. Mmm but I guess he wouldn't look good on the Swedawa Senators(tons of sarcasm).

um almost every d-man other than karlsson on the current sens has had a different partner for each game this season - they seem to be holding up pretty good as sens are in the league 3rd in goals against. Brian Lee wasted a lot of opportunities - he finally rounded his game last year thanks to PM and BM couldnt wait to trade him. and btw he was never worth a 1st rd pick considering the talent drafted all around him in the 1st round, so the trade wasnt that bad, but the pick was.

speaking of Muckler - talk about ruining the path of a team in a major way
Hossa - gone for the dilated one who himself is gone
Gleason - gone for Smolinski - 3rd line centreman
Sami Salo - gone for Schaefer - whose only positive was board play
Brooks Laich - gone for Bondra
Martin Havlat - traded for basically nothing - sens have absolutely no pieces remainig on the organization from that deal - the only piece that would have done anything - Barinka never dressed for the sens - never showed up
Martin Gerber - signed for a crazy deal
drafted Brian Lee instead of Kopitar or M. Staal ?!?!
let Chara walk and signed Joe Oh-no Corvo instead.....

Nobody is going to deny he's been buried in Edmonton and has a chance to rebuild his career somewhere else. It's your offer of Michalek that is bewildering and foolish.

That's how Ottawa got in this mess in the first place. Havlat, Chara, and Redden all left Ottawa for nothing via UFA / salary dump in the case of Havlat.

You can't set yourself up to lose trades badly and come out the other end smelling like roses. Love him or hate him Michalek is an established 20+ goal scorer who is capable of hitting 30 goals and posting 60+ points. Those do not grow on trees no matter how badly you want them to. Not to mention his contract value is excellent for the other all around things he brings to the game (Size, Speed, excellent defensive play)

Flat out there should be no panic this year. Losing the 4th leading point producer in the NHL for the full season pretty much means making the playoffs would be a bonus for this club. The goal should be to make this team great year after year not just a flash in the pan.

The sens fans calling for Gryba saying he is better than what they have got now make me laugh. #1- our D is the least of our worries we have are #rd or something in goals against. My critique on the D would be to leave the pairings together so they get used to each other. We need scoring in case you havent noticed.

as someone very familiar with the Bsens I can tell you that before the lockout ended Gryba was very much fourth on the depth chart down there behind Benoit/wire/bor o

Yes but the depth chart is set by the sens brass. Gryba was outperforming Boro and they were both defensive demen. How do you account for this?
