Game Day- Home Opener at SBP

The last time the Ottawa Senators stepped on home ice, it was in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

After more than 270 days, the Sens finally return to the friendly confines of Scotiabank Place as they play their home opener in the 2013 season.  There will be a couple familiar faces providing the opposition as Alex Kovalev, Filip Kuba and the rest of the Florida Panthers roll into town.

Florida comes into this one fresh off an impressive 5-1 win in their home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Brian Campbell scored twice for the Panthers and Alex Kovalev picked up three points.

You know Kovalev is going to want to put on a show against his old team tonight.

Not surprisingly, Paul MacLean will go with the same line up that scored a 4-1 decision in Winnipeg on Saturday afternoon.  It’s going to be really important that the forward combinations find chemistry early in a shortened campaign so MacLean will also stick with the same forward combinations.

Here is how the Sens are expected to line up.

Michalek-Spezza-Silfverberg
Latendresse-Turris-Alfredsson
Greening-Smith-Neil
Regin-O'Brien-Condra.

Methot-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Wiercioch-Benoit

After a strong performance in the opener, Craig Anderson is back in goal for the Senators with Robin Lehner dressed as his back up.  Jose Theodore is expected to get the start for Florida.

A friendly reminder for those of you that will be in attendance tonight.  Considering the success we had with it last year, let’s try and bring back The Alfie Countdown for another season.  It’s pretty simple- when the clock hits 11:11 each period, the crowd counts down from 10 and then follows it up with an Alfie chant!

I’m sure they’ll be some rust to shake off the first couple times but stick with it!

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:30 PM with the game available on the Team 1200 and Rogers Sportsnet.

GO SENS GO!

So stoked for the home opener tonight. I would have liked to see Boro in for Benoit but oh well, P-Mac knows best! Hopefully those top two lines will start to gel tonight and Anderson has another strong start.

Please please puhhhhh-leassss e keep that bum Kovalev off the score sheet tonight. We all know he's going to want to have a huge game at SBP in front of all his nay-sayers like me!

Kovalev will try too much tonight. He will OWN us on the boards though, he was always "l'artiste" along the boards; just cant get him off the puck.

I think Florida comes out FLYING tonight, they are a good team that is very well coached. I think Ottawa comes out harder in the first 10 minutes than what we saw in Winnipeg. This should be a beauty.

ps.... I have Florida making the playoffs. 3-2 Sens.

haha Kovalev refusing to speak to media until after the game lol

Also give benoit a chance. Him and Weircoch have played together all year. Gonchar and Phillips struggled as a pairing on Saturday so it's not as simple as saying take Benoit out and put Boro in

Weircoch and Benoit are stable and have familiarity

Also you take Benoit out and who plays the point on our pp#2? weircoch and phillips? God no

I don't think it's a huge issue if Benoit ends up getting taken out eventually cuz Alfie could man the point with weircoch on pp #2, and greening or regin could fill the forward spot. Having said that I do like Benoit and don't really want to see him moved yet

I think we are done with Alfie on the point to be honest. We don't need it, and you really don't want to take Alfie off that top unit.

Benoit will be sent down once Lundin comes back, but until then lets give Weircoch that sense of familiarity as he adjusts to the NHL game and gets his nerves out

Happy to be commenting on a Sens home opener day. Wish I could be there in person, but I'll be cheering them on from the confines of my local watering hole, which isn't a bad alternative ;)

This Florida team is the only one that worries me this season, due to how uncertain so many people are with them when it comes to making the playoffs. They go as high as 4th or 5th in the East in some reports and as low as 9th or 10th. They have put together a lineup of many fringe type players who were looking for a shot and in the end, it's worked out well for those players and the club. Gotta give it to Tallon, seems he has a knack for doing that.

But on the flip side, Ottawa is the same type of team. Many cannot fully predict where we'll end up. So if you think of it that way, we have just as much of an edge and just as much potential in the offensive. And I really like Anderson's 7-0-1 lifetime record against the Panthers. Looking forward to him making it 8-0-1 tonight!

Won't go down the prediction road, never a fan of doing that, as I always feel like it's a jinx waiting to happen. So I'm just going to cheer as loud as possible and keep the faith!

I'm not worried about Kovalev tonight. He's been known to do that in opening matches, he'll be lost in the action. I'm interested in seeing how our forwards play against Kuba.

Bring us another 2 points boys, Go Sens Go!!!

I'm pretty sure Alfie was on the second unit in game one, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm 95% sure Silfverberg was on the top line with spezza and milo for pp #1. With the slapshot accuracy Alfie has got I don't think there is a reason not to use him on the point, especially if we're just trying to shake it up one game.

I prefer the separate, smaller window. For me, I need to hide senschirp on my work computer (Screw you boss, I'm reading SC!) and the little window really helps. Currently it still opens in a little window but you have to scroll side to side. That being said, if it causes issues with the site then I have no problem settling.

The reason I'm not really interested in seeing Benoit in the line-up is because he's not a part of the long term future of this team. Borowiecki is. Gryba is. I'd like to see if either of those guys are ready for prime time.

Besides we don't need to play Benoit on our second powerplay unit. Karlsson is more than capable of playing a full powerplay and Gonchar and Wiercioch can split duties.

Pretty sure Spezza would join into the Alfie chant if he didn't have to focus on the game. Spezza is class and team mentality. We will chant his name in the future. It's about respecting a star on this team who is in his final year(s).

Not worried about Kovalev(edit) tonight, he already had his big game this weekend...he'll be invisible for 3 months now haha ;)

Boro can get a chance when we meet a "tougher" team. Benoit and Wiercioch will provide us with nice quarterback passes all game like they did against the jets...and that is what we will need against florida.

I didn't do too bad on jets prediction...so I'm gonna go out on a limb against florida and say overtime 3-3...then flip a coin.

surprised to see zero karlsson predictions by people commenting.

i'm looking forward to an even more dominating performance from the norris man after his 3 pointer last game. also interested to see how Regin pans out. This season is make or break for his value. I also love the sens line of Neil-Smith-Gree ning, this line is a dream come true.

Here's hoping Silfverberg nets his first of the season at the home opener. Btw, zibanejad has 3 goals in 3 games since coming back to bingo.

excitement all around.

sens have goaltending, forwards, coaching. Their defense is pretty good with some perceived holes, but if it holds up well then we look good in the east - atleast in the early going

also can all us sens fans start a petition to get healy off sens games on cbc?

I can't believe the amount of people concerned with Benoit in the line up, he played very well with Weircoch (did you happen to watch philips and gonchar????). Benoit not only wins wherever he goes, he always leads the playoffs in D scoring (memorial cup and 2X calder cup champion). He has a ton of experience, is a great leader and I can guarantee if you asked Luke Richardson which of the three deserved to play full time in Ottawa (out of Boro/weir/Benoi t) he would tell you Benoit without any hesitation. Give the guy 10-12 games in a row and I bet he sticks for the season.

I really don't think attendance is going to be the issue people made it out to be - especially in Canada where its so frickin cold that hockey is really the only good part of winter!

Warmer states- maybe a bit more difficult.

If they offered a free beer every game there'd never be another empty seat!

To that end there have been 13 sellouts for home openers and record tv ratings already. Ever hear the expression "no such thing as bad press"? NHL was on tv more during the lockout than during a normal season. Couple that with Obama speaking about it, Governors speaking about it, this may have actually had the reverse effect many had feared...

And yeah, the Alfie chants were beyond pathetic. People clearly did not know what to do as most skipped the countdown and started the chant at 11:11. Didn't help that we had whistles every period around that time.

Gotta stick with it though - need to get people informed and get this thing back on track.

11:11 - start the countdown.

11:00 (or technically 11:01) - start Al-Fie, Al-Fie chant for as long as you can take it.

The entire played well, and I mean everyone. Gonchar & Phillips played very wel defensively. Benoit & Wiercioch's chemistry have seem to have followed them from the AHL. Karlsson is, well, himself which is a beast on its own and Methot is a one man wrecking crew (see hip check earlier). Great to see the fans fill up SBP as well.

Okay, so it's just 2 games. But look who's in 1st place in the conference!

2nd game in a row PW46 kickstarts sens offense. i think the 3rd piece in our future top 4D is well on-track and hitting the stride at just the right time. Now if Ceci keeps his end of the bargain along with Claesson. Then Borocop, Gryba + Methot, that would be some D to boast. but patience patience.

Turris is on fire. Wicked shot and he loves to shoot, something spezza should get jealous of and then start doing too - not that there is anything to complain about spezz.

good to see silfverberg and o'brien get their first of the season. now we need smith and greening going. I think latendresse is close - getting chances, just needs to BURY.

do we even need Lundin with the way PW46 has played with Benoit being very very good too? With capable bodies available in Bingo, dunno. we could carry him as 7th D for injuries. I think Gonchar eventually will need some games off.

some sweet news is that Zibanejad has 3 goals, 4 pts in 4 gms in Bingo. Stone and DaCosta also are performing well.

you have to love sens goaltending right now. Anderson was beast mode - ROCK SOLID.

i have just happened to watch alot of the games since saturday and i feel sens have their game inching closer and closer to where PM wants it. Amazing flow and speed to it today, was a lot of fun to watch. EK65 is in a world of his own with his speed and skill, just DAMN. However, the real test i believe is coming with the penguins on the weekend - should be a fun game to watch.

Awesome game but we definitely ran into some problems with our D getting caught with the puck in our zone. Really hoping we can drop Phillips down into the bottom pairing before too long. He makes up for some of his speed issues with experience but the better players with wheels are going to exploit him as the season moves along.

Really love Methots game, he's the perfect compliment to Karlsson.

I'm kind of wondering if the logic behind having Lehner sit on the bench is for him to understand, that the backup in Ottawa will primarily be sitting... it's pretty evident after a couple games that Andy is going to be playing a shit load of games...

Great effort in both 1st and 2nd periods, in controlling the flow of the game. Craig Anderson leaving no doubt, as to why he is Sens' #1 goalie.

Most of the first 10-12 minutes of 3rd period, belonged to Florida, who just could not solve Anderson. Had they scored in 3rd to make it 2-1 Ottawa, it would have been a nailbiter to the end.

Late goals by O'Brien and Silverberg, killed the Panthers !
Paul MacLean's "double", got a great seat right behind the Ottawa Coach, and caused a few humourous moments, wherein
even Paul MacLean, was laughing after looking back at his "double"

Hope to see the Ian Mendes interview with this mystery man !!

Next game in Florida will have Anderson as the starter, and the next night vs Tampa Bay, will have Lehner start to give Anderson a rest !!

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Actually, the countdown is probably the gayest thing in all professional sports. It works a lot better without one

It works EVEN BETTER when you actually wait for the guy to be on the ice instead of just starting a random chant for a guy sitting on the bench
