BSens Take Two

After a somewhat inconsistent start to their season, the Binghamton Senators had their most successful weekend of the season, winning back to back games against the Phantoms and the Rochester Americans on Saturday night.

The latest three game winning streak comes at a good time for the BSens who have a busy weekend ahead, with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.  Luke Richardson’s team has posted a 7-4-1-1 record overall, good enough for second place in the AHL’s East Division.

On Friday night, Ben Bishop got the start for the BSens and put together his best outing of the season, stopping 33 of 35 shots on route to a 5-2 win over Adirondack.  Binghamton goals came from Grant, Eckford, Cannone, Zibanejad (his first of the season) and Mark Stone.

It was nice to see Mika Zibanejad finally end his goalless drought.  Zibanejad was actually named the game’s first star on Friday night.  Friday's game featured a line brawl with both Grant and Eckford getting into impressive tilts.

Less than 24 hours later, it was Robin Lehner leading the charge, as he stopped 49 of 51 Rochester attempts, earning him first star honours.  You never want to read too much into these regular season games but it was nice to see Lehner respond with a strong outing of his own a night after Bishop played his best game of the season.

Hopefully those two can continue to push each other moving forward.

Saturday’s goals came from Derek Grant, who had a pair, and Shane Prince, who picked up his first goal as a pro hockey players.

All in all, a great weekend for the Binghamton Senators.

  • Little new to report on the CBA front.  After last week’s suggestion that the two sides take a couple weeks off, there was suddenly word that negotiations would continue today in New York.  Talking is obviously better than not talking but obviously there is still a ton of work to be done.  Interesting read here where Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press sits down with Gary Bettman to get his read on the current negotiations.
  • Jared Cowen underwent surgery over the weekend with the initial recovery time set at 6-8 months.  Tough luck for Cowen and a significant blow to the Sens blueline, should the NHL end up playing a shorterned season.  Ottawa’s blueline of Karlsson, Phillips, Methot, Gonchar, Lundin, Borowiecki and Benoit looks fairly thin on paper and would need a couple guys to step up in a big way.

Wikstrand has been scoring and playing at a pace no one expected. Which is awesome and will see him play at the WJR's. However keep in mind he is at least 2-3 years away from the NHL.

Wikstrand was picked 196th overall in 2012 at 18 years of age. Was seen as a long term prospect given his age, considered undersized in weight for the NHL. He is a two way defender who is never caught out of position and plays PP very well.

I never heard about the tweets going on, but if you look at his previous seasons stats, in comparison to this year, it's pretty impressive.

2012-13 Mora Allsvenskan 22 9 6 15

9 goals and 15 points in the second highest league in Sweden is pretty good.

I've been seeing Grant's name more and more in the last few weeks in Bingo. He seems to be coming into his own. Is he centering the 2nd line, or are they switching them around at this point?

Good weekend for Bingo.. Glad to see Bishop have a good game. It was tough for him to get going with no training camp -- just scrimmages with locked-out players.

And great to see Lehner doing so well. He has played 10 games and has a .945 sav% and GAA of 1.77. He is ranked 6th in the AHL.

Good read on the Winnipeg interview with Bettman. So during the long meetings a week ago.. the NHLPA made 17 proposals and the NHL agreed on 13 of them. So how in the hell can those players like Crosby, White, etc.. come out and say the NHL is not negotiating? I just don't get them.

I certainly hope both sides are really realizing the damage they are doing to the NHL and cooler heads prevail and the meeting tonight gets somewhere. Get the share of HRR at 50-50 and then give the players a 10 yr contract limit but keep the variance.. The rest should fall easily in place.

Seems so simple.. this give and take.. but these two parties won't do either.

Nice to see the Bsens having team success. The lack of offense from the touted 3 is a bit concerning, but lots of adjustments for them this year.

As for Lehner, he's the man, and nothing Bishop can do to keep up with him. I think it's time you stop talking like there's a battle to be had here. Lehner is and will be the future of the Sens organization. Bishop will only be in the NHL if management wants to give Lehner starters minutes in the AHL. Their skill levels aren't even comparable at this point.

People really have to put the AHL in perspective for scoring. One Bingo does not have a dominant center. Second Bingo has more rookies then any other team in the league, some players dont come into their own until their 2nd season like O'Brien. Finally some players are far better in the NHL then their numbers in the AHL would suggest. Colin Greening was a 4th liner in the calder cup run, yet played top six in the NHL.

-2 #10 Sandy 2012-11-19 14:04
IF there is an NHL season this year then Bishop will be in Ottawa and probably traded at the deadline. The way Lehner is playing now you can't keep him in the AHL past this season.. unless of course the lockout goes into next season.

And IF the lockout ends... there a quite a few good young players, ie Subban, Del Zotto, Jamie Benn, etc that don't have contrats yet... So with what they say will be a 10 day window to get the game done... some teams are going to be rushing to get these guys signed..

I posted something on this a week ago...he's looking like one of the best steals from the draft without a question.

Regardless of how long it takes him to make the show, any 7th rounder that turns into a legit pro let alone an NHL regular should be considered a major steal!

Lets hope he has a great showing at the WJC.

A couple question,
1. How is Zibby and Silfverberg playing? I realize what you wrote in the above post about Zibby, but besides that, how are they doing? I felt like they were be putting up more points this year.

2. If the NHL does cancel the season....how does the draft work in regards to team's drafting position.

From the limited amount of play I've seen, Zibby's playing well but the points just aren't happening right now. I definetly think his stats will improve. I haven't noticed too much of Silfverberg.

Zjad and Silverburg have played well, Zjad especially had several great chances but just couldnt bury one until recently. Silverburg has been the most consistent rookie forward in Bingo.

I'll have to search but there will definitely be a draft. If I remember vaguely the draft order is based on 3 things including the amount of times the team has made the playoffs over the last few years.

Again I will have to look into detail but I think it's like a lottery and each team has 3 balls put in and one gets taken away for Ottawa (we made the playoffs) but Edmonton would likely have 2-3 put in.

0 #25 AllStarAlfie 2012-11-19 22:09
I looked further into it and it looks like each team has 3 balls put into the lottery. If the team makes a playoff appearance in the last 3 years, they get a ball taken away. If they were in the playoffs 2 or 3 times, they will get 2 balls taken away. Each team will have at least one

Now there might be an exception for teams like Edmonton so they pick later, anyways feel free to expand or correct me if I'm wrong on this

I think the draft question was asked a few months ago and the answer then was this (of course I don't know if it's right or not).

Every team starts out with 3 balls, you have one ball taken away for every year out of the last three that you made the playoffs or for every no 1 overall pick.

Those teams that end up on zero get one ball back because every team gets a ball in the lottery.

So Ottawa gets 1 ball along with the oilers and whichever teams have made the playoffs at least twice in the last 3 years.

Let's make a bet right now that Edmonton still gets the #1 overall pick in the next draft.

I would say there are specifically 2-3 boneheads on here that are routinely giving thumbs down because they somehow think that that this whole lockout should be pinned exclusively on the owners as a whole.

On a side note, nice to see the players continuing to alienate the fan base as well as the people paying there ridiculous contracts... I'm looking at you Kris Versteeg...as one poster commented on TSN, your right Kris, any league that can justify paying you 4 million a year must not be run properly.

Minnesota getting 1st or 2nd overall would be scary. Their recent trades and FA pick-ups have them well positioned (although there may be cap troubles ahead0. Them having the opportunity to have McKinnon alongside Parise, Heatley, Setoguchi et all, or Jones alongside Suter would be very interesting.

They also have a really good bunch of prospects according to most guides I've read about that sort of thing.

As crazy as those FA pick ups were, Minnesota is the exact type of team I'd like to see win the lottery to help fix the Northwest division. They've been a bottom feeding fringe team for awhile. They have sold out crowds each year, and have made the best of what they had in the roster, but always fell a little short behind everyone else. Vancouver is already stacked. We know where Edmonton will be in a few years and Colorado has a pretty impressive young team right now as well. Outside of Minnie, I think Calgary is in dire need of a good boost to get the fans back into it and make that division competitive again. If you are looking outside that division, then Winnipeg all the way!!

I agree Sandy, they're good enough as it is!

It surprises me even more knowing that they were going to lockout the players and lose part of the season that he was so aggressive with those front loaded heavy bonus contracts. I guess he put all his chips in a salary cut without a make whole provision.

I mean, adblock removes both the Senate picture, and banners from ad networks.

The Senate picture deserves to be displayed (which can be done by moving it to path without /ads/).

Other banners... well, I don't care, since they are removed by adblock anyway ;) But if you think you're losing money, try to add Donate button and see what is better.

Grant Smith I would say should be scaring Kaspars Daugavins as Grant if he can do this at the nhl level would be a cheaper replacement on a 2 way contract.....I love Daugavins he is a guy that pumps your team up in the locker room and is a true team player but we have too many forward prospects so some will have to be moved out eventually.

Happy to say I brought my Son to his first 67's game, thanks for the tickets Chirp. He asked a lot of questions and had a great time. He kept calling them the Senator's until the 'Let's go, 67's' song was played a few times and got in his head. I think he knows the difference now. The attendance was low, very low. You could hear a pin drop, but I guess some of that has to do with it being a Tuesday night game and the fact that most fans from the East end won't travel to SBP. Oh, and lets not forgot the losing streak they've been on.

67's FINALLY picked up a W with the 5 - 3 victory. It was much needed before this 9 game road trip. Monahan's goal 24 seconds into the game was a sweet setup pass and it looked like the 67's were going to take it to them. But Kingston owned them in the 1st period, which ended 1 - 1, I think at one point the shots were 12 to 2 or something crazy like that. And when the shots were closer, the majority of saves that had to be made by the Kingston keeper were far out wrist shots that were really just Ottawa trying to keep the puck in the zone.

However, in the 2nd Ottawa stormed back scoring 2, 2 minutes apart, which caused Kingston to swap tenders. From that point on the 67's didn't look back. Even taking 5 penalties to the K's 0 at the end of the 2nd, the 67's maintained great pressure. When it was all said and done, the name being praised was Steven Janes who finished with 5 points and Clint Windsor for getting his 1st win this season.

I never looked into it, but was there a reason they couldn't play at home within these 9 games that forced them on the road, or was that simply an OHL schedule thing? Often you see that when big events are coming, but I wasn't aware of much happening at SBP outside of a few concerts.

This is said to be a significant move in the NHL's direction but we won't really know that until the league has a chance to react.

off hockey topic or ad topic here..anyone try the Wii U yet? am thinking their concept is very good, just not sure how well it will be received if they keep up with the cartoony style games like Wii Sports. (quite a price tag too at $300)

Don't know a ton about Wii U. What is it exactly?

basically its the similar console I believe from what I have heard..but your controller is now basically like an ipad...and say if you are playing a game that involves a map..say like Elder Scrolls Oblivion..your map shows on your controller while your game play is on the tv in front of you..not sure if that all the perks yet..haven't had a chance to try it yet.
