This move is not as much about Lehner as it is about giving Bishop a shot. When Murray made the move prior to the deadline, he explained that both Lehner and Bishop would be given a chance to prove themselves.
Lehner played well in his audition, now it's up to Bishop to show he can play at the NHL level. With Craig Anderson not expected back any time soon, the Sens will need contributions from both young goaltenders.
Bishop has looked good in Bingo, putting up a 2-1-0 record and a .944 save percentage.
BB-Shopp to the rescue!
Go sens go!
Bishop has to match or better it...
Lehner has laid down the challenge.
I hope he took the demotion well. He did all he could do in his last 4 games... especially the Boston & Chicago games... He can't help it if the team in front of him for two of those games couldn't get the job done.
Yikes.
Lehner seems to be taking the news well - he's looking forward to playing the Marlies this week (beat the baby leafs!)
For Craig Button to leave Spezza off that roster though? DOUCHE.
Is it tomorrow yet?
UNLEASH THE KLINKHAMMER!
Binghamton needs a goalie too.
Exactly. Think big picture.
Not only does bingo need a goalie too but now they don't have to pay 3 goalies an NHL salary. It's also a business you know. This move saved Melnyk a solid amount of cash
Cant wait to see the giant play. I'll I'm looking for is to see how his lateral movement is and if he can make the necessary save to keep the teams momentum going. Lehner had that going every game until vs the panthers(not that he had a bad game, just didn't make the crucial save).
Even if the giant plays out of his mind I still see Anderson as our starter next year. There is finally a competition for the starter AND backup position. I think we should look at keeping that battle going as long as possible...obvi ously until it gets to the point where we get an offer we can't refuse on one oft the three or until the two young guys are just too good
Seriously, our DEFENCE is stinkin' the joint out, we're playing like we are home safe and sound and in a playoff spot. I don't think we appreciate how well "Andy" played to get us here. Gonchar is the key take the pressure off Jared that takes the pressure off #4 and #97, that takes the pressure off "Karl", who by the way handed in the Norris last night!
Our young goalies (Bishop/Lehner) seem to be getting some recognition from the NHL:

One of the best players on the ice. He had 7 hits and it looked to me like he tipped Cowen's point shot in but Cowen got credit for the goal. Either way he was instrumental in that goal. Looks like he's got good feet too.
I have to agree, these nick names for Lehner are silly...
With respect to Bishop, he's learned everything he can playing in the AHL, for him to continue developing, it's time to play in the bigs....Lehner is going to be awesome but he still has alot to learn...
Don't worry. You'll see him back in Bingo after he plays 3 more games. Unless he impresses enough to give away the 7th round pick.
@RobinLehner: Good times with the big boys!! See u b sens in Toronto tomorrow!!;)
Seems to have taken it well. I'm sure Murray initially told him his NHL stint was only temporary.
Great to see that. Probably a sign the kid's got a great work ethic. Keep up the good work Lehner. Hope to see him bounce back in the AHL and come better than ever in the NHL in a close future.
Lehner did, and then we can compare who will be the backup to Anderson during the playoffs !
Bishop's biggest challenge will be this Thursday in Ottawa vs the Rangers.
Go Sens Go!!!
With the trade for Bishop, I think that pretty well solidified that the sens will take a D in the first round of this draft. There are no elite forwards after the top 10 and goalies are now set (blue chip prospect wise) now we can focus on picking one up in a late round.
As for D prospects is it amazingly deep this year. After the top 4 D prospects, it is really a crap shoot on who will be drafted in the 10-25 range.
While Ceci would be great to get - as an Ottawa 67 member - I believe that he will be one of the front runners to go in the top end of that secondary group (10th overall range) and likely out of the Sens reach at the draft.
Players more likely in the Sens range are (in my own preference order)
Maatta - two-way D better skater than Koekkoek but less mean
Koekkoek - Strong two-way D who has a bit of a mean streak
Pouliot - Offensive D a little undersized with amazing skating
Still jumping up the boards is Finn. I haven't gotten a chance to watch him much, but he sure is skyrocketing quickly, and may just be out of the Sens reach come draft day.
I know there will be those who disagree with me, those who believe that the tank was the way forward - but isn't it nice that we are talking about prospects who are going to be out of our reach come draft day?
Just shows how far this team has come as opposed to the early season predictions from most of the experts and a lot of people on here (me included).
Whoever is at Ceci range we need to make a deal with, get the 10th pick. Right now MyNHLDraft has Ceci at 9th, right now Buffalo.
8th is Leafs, 10th is Tampa. I dont see any fo these teams except Tamps wanting to draft a D. Maybe send a couple of FW prospects to land Ceci.?
Actually no, it hurts...I would much rather get elite talent in the top 4-5 than be a one and done bubble playoff team.
Its great that our guys stepped up but we can clearly see now they're full potential has been reached, guys like Greening, Condra, Butler, Foligno, I would give anything to replace one of those guys with Yakupov, Grigorenko, Forsberg, Galchenyuk.
Seeing Greening/Butler on the top line makes me cry everytime...
Class is the right word. Auld has had very few games this year and although he wasn't ever really stand-out in any of those, he is still a good teammate who is respected by the other players, and he shows up to the rink with his lunch pail and goes to work. Can't fault a back-up goalie for having a rough year, he is exactly that...a back-up with very few games under his belt.
Problem is, teams in those draft positions will NOT move that pick for guys like Greening or Butler. We'd be forced to include a high prospect.
Grabs is a great player don't get me wrong, but to be committing that much money to basically a 2nd line player is awesome to see from a Sens fan. Personally he should have fallen in the 4.5 range
And the robot arm begins to move his pieces around the board.
Plus a team can only have 2 active (healthy) goalies on their roster at any time. (Im pretty sure...)
So, who would be considered good trade bait? Who would the Sens NOT move?
NEW YORK – Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slashing Florida Panthers forward Sean Bergenheim in NHL Game No. 977 on Sunday, March 4, in Sunrise, Fla., the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 14:06 of the third period. A minor penalty for slashing was assessed to Karlsson. The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Oh I know that, I was just saying I would rather be in 28th-30th place to have a chance at one of those guys. We are looking at a false security blanket, Greening, Condra, Butler, Foligno have all reach max potential IMO, 3rd and 4th liners playing in the top 6 really doesnt cut it, yes they had great years in terms of production vs value but they are not top 6 players.
I understand people are pumped for us to be back into the playoffs, hell even I'm getting excited but reality is we either face NYR or BOS with quick exits or even fall out of the playoffs.
The good thing is we have tons of FW prospects and I guess one of them has to turn elite, eventually?
If Murray can find a GM that will take a prospect from us in exchange for a pick that gets us a better prospect then he'll do it of course - but GMs are (generally) not that stupid.
The fact that we're ahead of schedule due in large part to the quick development of our young guys should mean that we're not as desperate for high picks as we would have been otherwise. Detroit and other teams have kept the young blood coming in with late picks for years - no reason we can't do the same. If we keep faltering with Andy out and finish 8th then yeah, I guess it would be better to drop all the way to 15th - but otherwise ride the Karlsson (and others) wave while it lasts.
For some reason I have a really strong feeling Puempel is gonna be a bust, I think we should move him.
My great great grandmother was a psychic so, I could be on to something.
Hmmm good question MadPJ...
IMO I would say Noesen is available, American teams would love to nab this guy from us, he is lighting it up in Plymouth after a slow start.
Another and I know this will not be popular would be Zibanejad, I just dont see him on the top line Michalek-Spezza -Stone/Prince/P ageau/FA, he's Fisher 2.0 and on the 2nd line I see Puempel-Turris-Silfverberg.
With Noesen 7 Zibanejad I think we could easily move up and get Ceci, which we have more of need of than FW.
Would love nothing more than to see Bishop drop the hammer on this Lightning team. But Im not going to kid myself....tonig ht's match-up worries me.
The team will have a great feel for both goalies. I hope the winner of this contest is based on performance and not contract or age. Either way though, I think this will show everyone we have 2 great goaltender prospects and neither is a bad decision.
As much as I love Karlsson, I am happy the NHL fined him because incidents like that need to be eliminated and it's best he learn his lesson now instead of pulling that in the playoffs and accidentally hurting someone more than intended. Lesson learned and the penalty is just a slap on the wrist. Easy for all to move on from.
I do think however, that Maclean has gotten to the point of over thinking his lineup. He had Turris and Alfie going earlier in the year, the simple answer is put the catalyst (Foligno) back with them. Although Greening is no superstar in the making, Spezza's line was much more balanced and consistent when he was on it in my opinion. I think the Butler experiment has pretty much run it's course, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in the press box for a couple games or with more 4th line role and situational offensive opportunities on the power play.
What you wouldnt like this team? Possible Stanley Cup contender for the next 10 years!
Michalek-Spezza-Stone(Could try out Prince, Pageau)
Silfverberg-Turris-Alfie(Puempel, Prince, Pageau)
Greening-Smith-Condra
Foligno/Daugavins-O'Brien-Neil
Karlsson-Ceci
Cowen-Phillips
Gonchar-Gilroy
Borowiecki-Wiercioch
Anderson
Lehner
Bishop
Can't seem to find it, but if anyone has a leak on what Bishop's new mask looks like, I'd love to see it.
Not that it really matters, but did anyone see the fight Bishop got in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9d1w1ILGlQ
Nope! You don't trade a young player with loads of potential who will more then likely be ready to step in the NHL next year for a player that is further in his development and might only be ready for the NHL in 2-4 years.
That's a lateral move at best, honestly I see it as a downgrade!
Your basically saying you are willing to trade the 6th overall pick In 2011 for the 10-15th pick in 2012. How is that an improvement???
If Murray trades any of our blue chip prospects, it will be to upgrade the roster like a trade for a young more established player.
It upgrades our D, which is what we need the most right now, not FW.
Zibanejad in the lineup wont upgrade anything, he's probably gonna play AHL next year, he's 19, he's not gonna be in the NHL until they feel he's developped enough, which is not close to being now.
either Nash or Parise will be a sen by summer. with all our depth, can't see any
room for Greening, Smith, Foligno and Neil. Lehner will be traded and Gonchar will be in russia eating porogies...
