Game Day- Battle for the Northeast

The Ottawa Senators begin life without Craig Anderson tonight when they host the defending Stanley Cup Champion, Boston Bruins.

With their number one goalie sidelined indefinitely, the Sens will turn to Alex Auld as they try to run down the division leading Bruins.  Auld's last start came on February 9th when he backstopped the Senators to a win over the Nashville Predators.

While on the surface it appears like the Sens may be in tough without Craig Anderson, the way the offence has been clicking of late they just might be able to surprise the power house Bruins.  Add in the fact that Boston was in Buffalo last night and the Senators may have a chance to jump on the visitors early.

Tuukka Rask got the start for the Bruins last night so we can expect to see Tim Thomas tonight.

Led by Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza, the Sens have been filling the net at an incredible rate lately.  Ottawa has scored 21 goals over their last four games and will give the Bruins all they can handle. Against a physical Bruins team, MacLean will reinsert Matt Carkner for some added toughness.  Brian Lee comes out.

Here is how the Sens are expected to look...

Michalek-Spezza-Butler
Greening-Turris-Alfie
Daugavins-Smith-Condra
Foligno-O'Brien-Neil

Kuba-Karlsson
Phillips-Gonchar
Cowen-Carkner

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM tonight with all the action available on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.  CBC has a stream available on their site for fans that can't tune in.  And if you are in the building tonight, BE LOUD!  With Anderson out, the Sens could use an added boost and they can get that from a raucous Saturday night crowd.

GO SENS GO!

  • Murray has indicated that he'll wait till the weekend is over then decide whether or not he needs to add a goalie.  From what I've been told, he has already begun to evaluate the available options but is in no rush to make a move.  There has been some talk about Dwayne Roloson as on option but I don't get the sense that is the type of move Murray is looking to make.
  • While I still do not expect Bryan Murray to be active over the next few days, that doesn't mean he will be sitting on his hands either.  Murray will be actively scanning the market for a bargain.
  • On Friday, March 2, we'll be holding another SensChirp Event at the Local Heroes on Clyde Avenue. For just $60 bucks you get a 300 level ticket to the game against the Chicago Blackhawks, $15 worth of food and transportation to and from the game. Not to mention a chance to mingle with some SensChirp readers. Call 613 224 3873 and mention the SensChirp event to book your spot. Space is limited!

Huge opportunity for Lehner. Not tonight, but he should most definitely be getting the start tomorrow. Really excited to see him play again. Hopefully he's lights out, because I'd much rather Byran Murray not use up any assets for another goalie. Yes it would be nice to have another goalie such as Bishop in our system, but I'd rather pick someone in the 3rd or 4th round.
I think Aukd is a solid vet who should be able to step in here for us and get a few wins. He has been struggling but he knows his role and should be able to keep us in the game tonight.

On another note, has anyone seen st. Louis' roster oncap 'capgeek' or 'nhlnumbers'? They have almost 10 top 6 type forwards. Some of which are RFA's(Stewart, Perron, T.J Oshie) and a couple that are UFA's(Arnott, Langenruner), and then there's a few that are signed for years to come(Macdonald, Backes, Steen).

Even if both Langenbrunner and Arnott leave via free agency (which I think is doubtful because both players have been solid all year) they would still have far too many players getting top 6 salaries/roles.

They made those additions over last summer because there were many questions surrounding Macdonald's and Perron's long term health (concussions). Now that both are back and playing very well they have a line up absolutely littered with talent and skill.

I don't expect them to make drastic moves at the deadline but once the offseason comes and they have to re-sign 3 pretty high profile top 6 forwards while still carrying macdonald's 4.7 cap hit, Backes' 4.5 and Steen's 3.3, plus Berglund's and D'Aghostini's being RFA's the following year. As a budget team, they will have major decisions about their forwards.

I haven't even mentioned their defense. It has been well publicized that st lou wants a good defenceman. This is probably because Jackman is getting old and is a UFA this offseason, on top of that, they have to budget for probably their best all around player in Pietrieangelo who has to sign next year as well.

On top of all that they also have a big cap hit in goal (Halak's 3.7)

To me it's pretty obvious some of those "top 6 caliber players" will be moved at seasons end. Or the other option they have is to move some pieces now from an area of strength to help a weekeness just like we did with turris.

Read this on Twitter this morning

On the Rick Nash front. Rangers have offered Del Zotto or McDonaugh, 1st and prospect Tim Erixon. Leafs offered Schenn, 1st, Kadri, Grabovski

Man, these are overpayments for Nash. He's a good player but that's a TON to give up

I hope the Leafs land him. He'd be going from a team with no center to a team with... no center. They'd still suck. And it would likely take them out of the Parise sweepstakes this offseason

On Andy's finger...

Is there any way he can get a modified blocker that could immobilize his pinky with his ring finger and allow him to play? He should still be able to hold his stick with two fingers and his thumb. Might be limited in his stick play but at least he would be available.

Goalie's? Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I think Toronto's offer for Nash is garbage. Kadri is a bust, and Schenn... well... I don't have a high opinion on him either.

I hope Nash activates hims NMC on these 2 teams. Just a personal opinion. I'd like Nash to stay in the West.

don't agree with the Carkner insertion at all. I think Lee brings a whole lot more of other things that are useful against a bruins team. for e.g. Lee is much more confident and stable in his own zone and has no qualms about skating the puck up, he is a dependable puck mover, he can play with some physicality and he is just an overall better defenseman than Carkner. Not a good move, Julien is too smart, he knows that he can pigeon-hole the Carkner pairing all night by putting out his speedier forwards against him.......

Carkner with all due respect makes the Ottawa defense and by extension the Ottawa offense slow and that is not the system Maclean plays. His system is speed, puck possession and back pressure as a 5 man unit, with a great allowance for defensemen to be involved in the play at all ends of the ice. Carkner does not allow that by being considerably slower than any sens forward or defenseman.

He's a UFA so maybe someone is interested.

The only other option to take out for him is Kuba (if the need is to get more physical) and he's A) playing well, B) also a UFA.

Hahaha clitsome. I think he'd be a bargain but it also may exacerbate the log jam we already have on our back-end.
As for goalies, I'm praying Murray sticks with Auld and Lehner. While it was a good move acquiring Turris, I maintain that Murray overpaid a bit and don't want to see any more top-end future talent be moved for the sake of what may well end up being a shallow playoff run.
Besides, Auld has taken his lumps. People carved him up for never being sharp and I'll be the first to admit he had some stinkers. Still, how can he ever have the chance to heat up if he's always got a spot on the bench?
And any bigs experience for Lehner is a bonus in his development. Let em' play, BM!
GO SENS!

The O'Brien line has been getting plenty of ice and Neil/Foligno have had some double shifts from time to time.

So similar to last year it's almost two third lines with no "traditional" fourth line full of plugs (since we don't really have any plugs).

#1 its not Murray's decision who plays

#3 There isnt a trade in the world that would be worth losing this game just so Ottawa can 'showcase' their #7 defensman

0 #31 St Nick 2012-02-25 13:48
Both Bishop UFA & Lehner want to be in the NHL next season, not the AHL. Even if Bishop is traded it's likely he will only be signing a one way contract with a team that will have him play the backup at the least in the NHL.

Anderson will eventually heal so Murray won't be going after a #1 goalie & is Rolonson or any of the other goalies out there a better option than Auld right now? This will also give Lehner some playing time which is what management seem to want to get a good look at him.

There is no need to go after another goalie, however, there is a need to draft a goalie or sign an unsigned goalie (European) for Bingo at some point soon.

The irony when so many think Carkner has no value to this team Maclean thinks he does against the tougher & bigger teams. He is not being showed cased, he is in there because he can handle the bigger 7 tougher players better than most of our other defencemen including Lee.

You realize Kuba is top 10 in the league in Shorthanded TOI. and Gonchar has 30 assists. I would not want Carkner filling in for either of them. I hope to god Murray does not trade Kuba or Gonchar if he's planning to fill their spot with Carkner.

I think Murray pretty much has the book on Carkner. I don't think he needs to put him in for 1 game to 'evaluate' him. Same goes for Maclean.

Heck, I even have the book on Carkner: On a good night, he's a physical presence with good defensive position and the ability to keep the puck in the offensive zone.
On a bad night he creates odd man opportunities against and takes too many penalties.

There, any GM reading this, no need to watch the big showcase

A couple points

- Also don't agree with Carkner going in. You've won 4 in a row, why change anything and what does that say to Lee? He has been playing great and doing everything right. I think that's horse shot to be honest.

- I think Murray is crazy to give anything up for a goalie. Let Auld and Lehner have the ball here for a bit. Anderson will be back soon anyways.

- Dustin Brown would be the only player rumored available I'd consider giving any picks/prospects up for

- Is Clitsome really on waivers? I would definitely claim him for sure! Ottawa boy as well. You can never have too much depth

Exactly.

Carks has a role on this team and provides the defensive depth we will likely need if we go further than one round of the playoffs.

A little baffled frankly that Pugilist Konopka isn't lacing them up today...

This is, without a doubt our biggest game of the year so far and for so many reasons. I would think the biggest reason is knowing we CAN beat the Bruins, should we wind up facing them in the post season at all.

Give yourselves some good tape to revisit in April boys, rip these dirty Bruins a new one!

I don't suggest "getting rid of" Carkner. But if a team is worried about toughness going into the playoffs and makes a decent offer then we should do it. Would have to be a good offer since he's great as a #7 guy though.

I doubt he's resigned next year unless Murray only has 6 guys he feels are NHL ready and wants to keep Carkner for depth on a short deal or something.

And Konopka - I like him a lot but I wouldn't call him a "pugilist". He's got some grit, sure, but the way O'Brien has been playing you can't take him out really.

I was so looking forward to those two Boston games.. but now with Anderson out.. not so much.

Auld played a good game against Nashville... but Boston is the better team.

My wishes were granted in that the game went to a shootout last night.... don't know how late the team got in.. I hope they are tired.

The Sun is reporting Anderson got injured by an ice pick... The tendon damage won't heal for some time.. but the once the stitches are out... can he play? That is the issue.. Patrick Lalime is available... LOL... Patrick said in a radio interview yesterday.. if it was any finger to be injured the 'pinky' was the least to affect the play.. BUT he did say it would have been better to injure the pinky on the catching glove side than the stick side... due to the fact it may limit Anderson's ability to handle the puck with his stick.

I hope Auld gets the job done.... if he has a bad game Murray makes a deal.

Anderson could be out up to 4 wks for all we know... and Lehner can't handle most of the games...

Going to the Isles game tomorrow -- hoping for Lehner to play.

As for Bishop... it should not take much to get him as he is a UFA at season's end.. as I don't believe he will be playing in 15 NHL games this year...

If the Sens trade for Bishop, I can see them attempting to sign him as the back-up next season. If that's the case, it gives them many options:

- Trade Lehner to a team like TB at the draft (especially if he threatens to head back to Sweden if not in NHL) if you feel Bishop can be your long term answer in goal

OR

- Trade Bishop during or at deadline next season for more assets to help rebuild or make a run in playoffs

In either case, it's a win-win for Ottawa if they get him now for a 3rd round pick

There is definately some good hockey trades to be found with the Blues if they can package Bishop with some of their excess RFA's that they will likely not be able to sign due to current contracts and future contracts that will be required as was brought up earlier.

I agree. Can't even recall how many times I've shaken my head in awe. He's had at least, in the past few games, many SOLID chances to really bury it in the net.. but for whatever reason his aim is terrible. Spezza would never miss those shots.

If Condra actually goes home over the summer and practices his shot ala Stamkos the previous summer, he would be a considerable threat IMO.

Ok there pal. I'm sure you were cheering when they got back to back goals from Daniel and then pulled Alex.

Jason played great and so did Erik.

Tomorrow we will likely see Robin.

Ummmm yeah. You're an idiot.

On another note, good comeback by the Sens, that was entertaining. The Sens can actually move up to sixth tomorrow with a win.

First - its not your team. Its Eugene Melnyks team. Secondly, thats great that they 'fought ' with 4 min left, down by 3, but they sucked from the net out for 56 minutes of the game.

The reason why the Sens got back in it was singularly stated by Neil. Huge fight to take down their best player and sit him in the box, pumps the crowd up, and immediately the Sens started playing better. That's called being a catalyst and leader.

Disappointing loss, but good comeback and shows that the Sens can compete with anybody.

Ummm yeah...Im pretty sure a pee wee goalie stops the second goal, so I do blame him because thats when the team truly lost all confidence and was forced to play come back hockey only to fall short.

So again, I do blame him. You can save 50, 60 or even 70....as a pro, that goal can't go in. It just can't. He changed the momentum of the game with that brilliant display.

He's junk - plain and simple. Sure he made some saves, but thats inexcusable for a pro. 20% they will win with him in nets....

Not going to get into a long debate with you but I have yet to see that reply (except in house). Looked soft unless it was tipped but yes, even then, Andy stops it.

But you should acknowledge that the team showed zero confidence from the drop of the puck. That's not Auld's fault - that's the team's.

Moot point though as Lehner will win tomorrow and hopefully Tuesday.

Hate to say it, but the reason we lost was because andy wasn't in nets and because Carks was in for Lee. I do not for the life of me understand why the fuck we still play Carkner before Lee. We have NEVER lost a game this season in regulation while Lee was in the lineup, and he has played 14 games. 13-0-1. Shouldn't that be proof enough that the guy is obviously doing something that helps our team win? Like really...I just don't understand why he isn't regularly in the lineup?! He plays a simple game that seems to balance our defensive core (or some shit), and doesn't skate at turtle speed.

EDIT: Also, I didn't think Auld was that bad, but bad enough to actually cost us the game (vs Anderson). Hope Lehner is in #beastmode tomorrow, we need to get back to our winning ways.

Im not your bro, or as it would be said properly, "brother". You would be lucky if you were related to me....you definitely wouldn't be called Dillan thats for sure, no male family member of mine would ever be called Dillan. Maybe 'Dylan', because thats more masculine , but not Dillan....

Do me a favour though, write this down too. Go out and get a life, Im sure your the person who is 36 years old, living at home in your mommy's basement, while she feeds you macaroni and cheese mixed with cut up hot dogs so you don't choke.... you likely refer to her as your 'roommate' so on the off chance you meet someone and bring them back to you house (i mean your mommy's house) they don't make fun of your relentlessly like I am doing right now....

That said, I think Auld shouldn't be playing, I was at the game and honestly, he made some okay saves but I think 2 of the goals were saveable, esp #2. Lehner should play the bulk til Anderson comes back or the get someone at the deadline.

Here's hoping tomorrow is better.

Absolutely... Tomorrow's game will be fun to see what he can bring. Like I said before though he should have played this game too since a two game tryout before the deadline would have been the best measure we would have been allowed with the timing of Anderson's unfortunate injury. Auld has shown this exact play in both season's he played here. He can stop pucks but tends to let in Lalime type game killers. If Lehner steps in and shows his game then we can have some comfort. If not he showed us a two game performance and could only blame himself if his game was not up to par enough to allow him to run with it and BM can go and get someone to hold the fort till Andy comes back.

Nice to see that we weren't going to be pushed around by the big bad bruins. I'd love to see a 7 game series against them in a conference final. Hopeful thinking but I'd like our chances. Anyways - looking forward to back to back to back Lehner starts. Here's hoping for a 3 game winning streak.

Sorry but disagree - I thought the Sens came out hard and fast with very good cycling that the Bruins couldn't match until they scored at the 4 min mark. First goal was not Aulds fault - Karlsson was weak on Bergeron, the 2 and 3 were - in the end Auld was their undoing - plain and simple - he SUCKS! We need insurance - I would take a serious run at Harding - don't know anything about this Bishop kid but I would take him and start him blind over Auld - no question. Please Murray make the move Auld has just demonstrated he is not the solution - I don't even know why he started in the first place.

To Mike Bauer,

If you grammar and sentence structure were proofread a little (even just a little tiny bit) you would come off as infinitely wiser. I just logged on and somehow managed to read every comment... At first I thought you were just an ignorant jackass, but as I read further, I found many comments quite humorous, and thoroughly enjoyed some of your statements, albeit I'm not sure if the ones that I enjoyed were meant to be funny. However, grammatically you are an idiot, and it really deflates anything you are trying to say and gives much confidence to the people you are trolling. Not sure if you are aware, but most of us are Sens fans here, and honestly, who the fuck cares if somebody who may not actually know the players in person wants to call them by their first name, or refer to the organization as if it is also theirs. I think that is awesome, and it is a real testament to the care level of some of the fans of this hockey team. So seriously man, if you're gonna be an asshole, at least become a little more wise about everything, and try and add some satire in there as well. In fact, ask Tookie for some tips. He is pretty good at what he does.

Anyway, it was a rough first period. Sens score early, only to have momentum deflated shortly after, and can't get anything going on a PP and a couple of real solid rushes. Then Auld lets a fairly weak goal in, and that was the turn of the game right there. If it is 1-1 in intermission, it's a whole different game. I personally really like Auld, and think he is gonna help us get through til Andy's return, but he has to save those. Especially when he is not making any highlight reel saves either. But in any case, we lost to in my opinion the best team in the league, albeit they may not be right now, and showed we deserve to play with them.

The future looks great, and I'm excited to see what happens down the stretch, whether we make the playoffs or not!

Dear Bretzky,

I wasn't going to come back on, my job here is done, I made my points - you laughed, you admitted you did. But I really didn't realize I was going to be quizzed on my grammar. But maybe you should look at your first sentence...the correct way to say it would be 'If YOUR grammar..... So next time you try and come back at me with grammar burns, proofread your own comments first.

Considering I wrote my material quickly and everything just came up off the top of my head, I thought my grammar was decent to say the least.

Either way, I don't care. Im clearly a cut above everyone when it comes to jousting, including you. Get something better than grammar bashing though. Seriously, that's weak...and lame.

Yes, I agree. It gets bad on here after a loss. PHi/Pit won last nite so we need tonite's game bad. Let's not put all the blame on Auld though because the entire team played bad. Of course we had a couple of players who stood out but we need all of them to step up. We are not a top team yet and we win by playing our top game each and every nite. We all have bad games from time to time and last nite was ours. We can start over again tonight against the Isles.

It must admit though that you haven't seen anything yet. You should check out the comments on Sportsnet about the Leafs loss last night. Grab a coffee or like me a Caesar and have a chuckle or two from the love the fans are giving Burke, Wilson, the goalies and on and on and on.

Relax a bit folks...we will get them tonight!!!

Question.. if Corvo was so badly hit in the head by Turris why did he not go for the 'mandatory' 15 min assessment? Hopefully he will only get a fine. First time offender... but it's Shanahan -- who hates the Sens.

Case and point -- if the Gaustad hit on Winchester.. did not even get a penalty or a suspension or a fine... and Turris does get suspended -- I will be one pissed off Sens fan..

Considering Auld has only played 7 games this season.. was his game that bad last night.. even though he did let in 1 bad goal. A lot of turnovers by the Sens did not help matters.

Going to the game today.. Hoping & praying for a win. Florida/Was/Win n starting to close in on the Sens... Lehner & Lee had better be in the lineup... and Karlsson setting the points record. If Nabocov is in net... it will be a lot tougher game than last time...

Oh -- for just one time -- I would really be interested to see how the Sens would do against Boston if it was Rask in net!

I wonder who is going other way in Bishop deal? My guess is Da Costa and a 2nd or 3rd. Also wonder how this affects Lehners mindset. Clearly the team feels he needs a few more tears seasoning.

I can't believe they are even having a meeting over that hit. If anyone deserves a suspension it would be the Boston announcer who lost his mind and created the propaganda against Turris. Without his comments, guaranteed nothing would have come of the hit. His feet were on the ground and was shoulder to shoulder which caught a bit of head because Corvo was hunched over.
Shanahan had better show some fairness to us sooner or later but I doubt it.

Bishop worth the [second round?] pick. He's a good goalie and one that can backup Andy. This puts the end to Alex Auld. Thank goodness.

Great move by Murray. Subtle, yet effective. Now we don't have to worry about seeing Alex Auld get the nod for any of the remaining games, especially the playoffs.

Agreed.

Its kind of an unfair scenario to ask a goalie with less than 10 games this year to go and pull out a miraculous victory against the defending Stanley Cup team, and a team that has had our number for YEARS regardless of if we have our number 1 in nets.

That game was as close as it was going to get and the team played well.

And we haven't even seen what Lehner can do yet...

That being said, if Murray was going to pull the trigger on a goalie, I think Ben Bishop is the guy. Huge prospect (literally and metaphorically...)

I guess this means Alex Auld got a real shitty deal by signing back in Ottawa. Wow. Spectacularly shitty deal.

Second round pick in next year's draft.

Good trade. He's a good goalie, worthy to play in the NHL, will do well with Andy out and back him up when he returns, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, puts the end to Alex Auld.

2013 2nd pick and st-louis signed him one year contract, one way contract, so ottawa has there back up for next year

One thing is for sure, Bishop's 2.26 and .928 save percentage if far superior to 3.38 and .905 save percantage.

What's with all the Lehner love? The guy has yet to prove a thing at the AHL level (other than a nice run in playoffs). Bishop, like most NHL caliber goaltenders, has paid his dues in the AHL. Lehner needs to do the same

Yeah he's considered the best goalie in the AHL. He's also HUGE at 6'7 over 200 pounds.

The only reason he wasn't playing for the Blues is because of Halak and the emergence of Brian Elliot. Other than that he's an NHL backup goalie.

This is a good trade. Exactly what we need for the playoff push.

I'm sure Burke is pissed that he didn't get this guy looking at his goalie tandem :)

Interesting... Hopefully Lehner can have a good performance today and show Murray that he's also ready for the NHL. I'm still a Lehner fan. I think it's a good hockey trade, No more Auld as back-up. Can't never have to many G prospect.

Sick! Everyone's crying that this is unfair to Lehner, but goaltenders take a long time to develop. He's not having a very good season in Bingo this year. Lehner needs to continue playing every night in the AHL instead of being an NHL backup.

If anything, this is just a good move to bolster our organizational depth in goal. Every team needs a good group of quality goaltenders and behind Andy and Lehner, we had nothing.

Adding Bishop gives us a pretty good 1,2,3 punch now with Andy, Bishop, Lehner and we don't have to worry about Auld anymore.

I guess this means Alex Auld got a real shitty deal by signing back in Ottawa. Wow. Spectacularly shitty deal.

$1,000,000 to play in 14 games. He had 2 wins in those so I don't think he can put the blame on anyone but himself. A 3.35 GAA and an .884 SP won't cut it period.

Lehner still has alot to prove

Ya bingo won last year, but half that team in now in the nhl...and playing on a GOOD nhl team.

Great move

So what? He was hot for a few months and he deserves to be in the NHL now? If you want to talk stats, check his stats this year!

With this logic, Corey Locke should be playing on the Sens' top line too

So based on the contracts we have, Lehner will play today and then drive back to Bingo and Bishop and Auld will cover nets until Anderson comes back?

And then? Bishop will head down? Or will Auld be waived?

My guess is anything can happen. If Lehner plays well today, Auld could be waived/sent down. If Lehner stinks, he heads back to Bingo. Hell, Bishop could be heading straight to Bingo as we speak. He's on a 2-way contract this year so they have a ton of options

Bishop going to Bingo would seem odd. Or else, what was the urgency to sign him, and sign the best available back up? Clearly, he's headed to Ottawa. I think the question is how soon will Auld be waived...

I agree that would be the best move as long as Auld clears waivers (and he will) so he can report to Bingo

All I can really say is wow, that's embarrassing. Seriously who gets wound up and feels the need to get in a childish fight on the internet? Whatever floats your boats I guess. I've made fun of people in the past, but at least I kept the topic on hockey.

I'm not going to single anyone out because it was pretty amusing to read just now, but there's 10 minutes of my life I won't get back. Sad face.
