Here is what Cox had to say...
--The death of the NHL's top heavyweight, 28-year-old Derek Boogaard, was a stunning tragedy for his family and reverberated throughout the sport on the weekend. Answers to how he died could make his passing yet more meaningful to those outside the family.
He was rocked by a Matt Carkner right cross to the button on Dec. 9th and never played again, although it sounds like his training was going well. Sadly, he was challenged by Carkner after landing a good, perfectly legal bodycheck in the open ice on Jesse Winchester of the Senators. That the sick nonsense the NHL needs to crack down on but doesn't seem to want to. Boogaard knew his job and accepted it, but surely the guy had a right to be able to play the game within the rules without having to scrap every single time.
In the aftermath of the tragic death of Derek Boogaard, and only a day later for that matter, Cox had the nerve to draw conclusions between a Carkner/Boogaard fight from earlier in the year and the sudden passing of Boogaard.
Boogaard was one of the NHL's top heavyweights and on the play in question, in no way did Matt Carkner jump him or force him into an altercation. He challenged him and the two dropped the gloves. To imply that Carkner did something wrong on the play is absolutely ludicrous and to have the nerve to tie it to Boogaard's tragic passing was irresponsible and in my opinion, completely uncalled for.
I understand that Damien Cox is anti-fighting but to use Matt Carkner's name in connection with this incident was unfair on the part of Cox. I don't know much about Damien Cox but I sure hope he addresses this is the very near future.
The NHL lost a fan favourite in Derek Boogaard and at the all too young age of 28. That's the story here.
It is an issue in the league, no doubt about it, but no need to drag a person's name through the mud.
R.I.P. Derek
Too many false assumptions Cox is making to point them all out without being long-winded
Cox went way too far. Cox uses the word "Sadly" like the Carkner punch was the beginning of Boogard's downfall. Writers use words like this to hook the reader, just like "tragically" or "disturbingly". Cox knew he was directly linking the two incidents even though he has no proof and theoretically it can't be proven.
He took a common hockey event, linked it to a Boogard's death and blamed it on a guy that was doing his job.
Cox is a Leaf nation ham and egger, nothing else. He thinks himself a reporter and commentator. These comments prove he's nothing more than a wannabe who's totally out of touch with the realities of hockey - or sports in general for that reason.
Are you fuckin for real dude? Had you not notice what the topic was about? You're no better than Damien Cocks. Shame on you boy.
Derek knew his role, he knew Matts role, and he knew he would recover like a warrior. *Sadly* he mixed alcohol with his medication and he is no longer with us. A tragedy indeed but it happens everyday and it doesn't give shithead reporters the right to place undeserved blame on a vaguely connected incident.
To Damien Cox:
Fuck you you lying sack of shit. If you are looking for a job with the Sun media you have earned it and the reputation of tabloid BS that comes along with it. You give a bad name to journalism.
The most glaring questions are:
1- Why was an elite athlete prescribed such an addictive drug like oxycotin? Narcotics are never the cure for any injury, they just mask via numbing. Who prescribed this to Derek (ie was it the Rangers team Dr)? How many other players are on oxycotin?
2- Did the NHL substance abuse program fail Derek? We know he was registered in the program. How can the program learn to help players in the future avoid a similar fate?
Sadly, as long as we have spotty reporting in mainstream media, such as Damian Cox, we may never realize the answers to the important questions.
Instead of giving this guy Cox twice as much publicity as he ever would have gotten for 2 poorly written paragraphs. Talking about (and seeing) Huberdeau's play is actually relevant.
Now to be a Hypocrite:
Cox on Sportsnet this morning regarding Winnipeg season tickets:
"If a city like Ottawa can get a team, with no stadium, and no money, I don't think season tickets sales will kill the deal in Winnipeg"
That said, I agree with him that the fight was unnecessary. I don't know why players feel the need to fight a guy who delivered a clean check to his opponent. What Boogaard did was within the rules, what Carkner did was unnecessary.
However, that said, Boogaard has done this exact same thing too, so spinning it to make it sound like Boogaard didn't do the same thing dozens of times previously is irresponsible journalism on Cox's part. And as it has now been revealed, Boogaard had a pretty serious drug abuse problem, and he met with an unfortunately predictable demise considering what he was into.
THAT'S the story that should be told here. Don't be like Boogaard.
nothing wrong with talking about other topics...i think we all agree for the most part on this cox thing.
by the way..."shame on you boy"? really, who says that....
silver seven seems to think foligno, neil or regin may be the piece used to move up in the draft.
i hope it isnt foligno, out of the three id have say by to neil, smith can fill that roleif need be
As for Ottawa getting a franchise with no arena , etc...he's right again. Ottawa getting a franchise was a shock to 99.9% of the pundits out there.
Cox is a clown worthy of ignoring.
He should print a retraction on his previous story... but he won't.

Couturier performed significantly better against top teams although obviously it's quite a small sample. Huberdeau had 9 points in his last 10 playoff games - aka the games against real competition. In fact even in the 3rd round it could easily be said Huberdeau's team was markedly better than their competition based on regular season stats.
You can go ahead and eat crow now. You claimed Landeskog had a lousy playoffs a few weeks ago despite the fact that his 10 points in 7 games vs. real competition was actually a better result than what Huberdeau has done vs. strong teams over the past few weeks. I told you Huberdeau's stats would drop off when he faced real competition and I was right. The guy doesn't impress me any more than the others ranked to go top 8.
Landeskog actually had 10 pts in 4 games.. he went pointless 3 games in that series
Huberdeau has gone pointless 3 times in his entire playoff run.
Huberdeau's consistency far outshines Landeskogs Pts/G (which is lower than Hubby's BTW)
It's like when Havlat used to drop 4 pts in a game, and then disappear for a week... meanwhile alfredsson (in the same week) would score 1pt each game.
I think we can all agree we'd rather have a consistent player who gives us a chance to win every night than a guy who will win us One game a week and frustrate us for the all the others
He had 12pts in 4 games during that series.. OBVIOUSLY he wasn't going to score 3pts a game for the entire playoffs.
He would have something like 60pts by now!
Lol tyrant, sometimes you're just ridiculous..
Btw, what happened to that "real competition" Landeskog faced in first round? ohhh right, they got swept in the 2nd round.. must have been some reeeealll tough competitors.
Thought I would throw in a little funny today. LOL
Enjoy the long weekend.
What we can all look forward too, is that who ever we draft first is going to hopefully help this team down the road and provide the franchise with a rookie face. Whether it's Couturier, Huburdeau, Landeskog, or what have you. Take joy in that guys ;)
To ME, Landeskog isn't worth trading up to get. I would rather keep my 6th and 21st and get two quality guys, then put all my my eggs in one Landeskog basket.
Who knows? The 6th might end up better! Heck Tyler Ennis was a 26th draft pick. Mattias Tedenby- a 24th.
This is a pretty good draft. I would take advantage of getting as many prospects as I can.
That being said I hope JH still left at the 6th

Didn't know he played with such an edge.
Yes it would would it not?
But they would have to give away a hell of a lot to even come close to that.... and it would hurt them more than help them.
For those who aren't familiar with M Zibanejad. It's a bruins prospects site, but nonetheless provides good info. always great to see a hitting European forward. Sounds like the real deal.

Coming from an unbiased hockey fan, Dany Heatley's really fallen off. Hasn't been a factor all playoffs long. Only scored 26 goal during the regular season [by his standards]=
Should have stayed in Ottawa :S
In hindsight, I think getting rid of that contract really helped the Sens cap wise. SJ is in a world of hurt cap wise, I think, having the big 3 take up 21M all with NTC really hurts them against the cap. So what happens when a young Clowe or Couture comes looking for a big raise soon? Is SJ going to have the room to sign them.
By the way, was Heatley on the 3rd line in the last period. Talk about a diminished role... That will be really hard on his ego.
So Vancouver paid back SJ for taking out those 2 D by taking our Thornton. It will be interesting to see if he is available next game.
Damn the pizza line was a good line.
I hope Murray can nab a scoring forward. Not many too choose from though... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?id=25880
Simon Gagne anyone?
That's what they call karma for being a gigantic a**hole
I'd take Gagne for max 3.5 mil for a couple of years.
First time righter but been following you for about a year. Really like your updates and opinion on stuff. And quick for rumours. Good job. Anyways just commenting on the Mat Carkner and Boogaard comment. I totally agree its uncalled for! When you sign up for professional sports ur taking risks on your life and health. Stuff happens. And Carkner is not the Avery type. He just plays hard and defends teammates. What do you expect from a guy his size? Jeez. Anyways keep up the good work with the site Chirp. I have it for my homepage! Nice new look for site by the way. Take care. Go SENS Go!
