SensChirp Playoff Pool

The NHL playoffs get started tonight and even though the Ottawa Senators aren't involved, we can still find ways to entertain ourselves over the next couple months.  For the first time, we will be holding a SensChirp playoff pool.

I want to keep this as simple as possible because this is my first time organizing one of these things.

Think we have reached capacity on the pool. If you have signed up, be sure to get your picks in before 6:00 PM. If you missed the sign up check the comment section below for info on how you can sign up. Had to take the link off the main post because it appeared to be filling up.

And because everyone else is doing it, I figured I would offer up my picks for the first round as well.

Washington in 7/Philadelphia in 5/Boston in 4/Tampa Bay in 7

Vancouver in 7/San Jose in 6/Detroit in 7/Anaheim in 6

Yep it looks good. Found the scoring on there too.
Skaters - 1 point for a goal, 1 point for an assist
Goalies - 1 points for a win, 1 additional point for a shutout

I'm having a hard time finding anything that mentions pick rules. Is this one of those pick every round pools, or are we taking 6 guys all the way to the big show?

Six guys all the way I think. Once the puck drops tonight I lock the pool and the picks are locked in. (I think?)

Damn, all this is just making me more pissed we're not in the playoffs. It's been so long (well, it seems that way) ! We haven't had a decent playoff run since our trip to the finals and it's only getting further into the past.

I've been excited at our D prospects and for the rebuild in general, but this really is a lowpoint in Sens history. The good news is that we probably bottomed-out just before we acquired Anderson.

I'm just hoping we'll have steady improvement instead of wallowing in the NHL standings' nether region for 5 years like the Leafs.

A 1 year rebuild isn't really a rebuild. 3-4 would suck, but I could stand it because it works... if we're not back into the playoffs for the nest FIVE years, well, I don't know what then...

In all honesty, I would expect us to be back in the playoffs in 2 years if not next year. Don't give up hope, it's been a long season with little payoff, but the future is still bright and has already begun. Spezza and the young guys have shown what they can do when healthy, and starting next year they'll have a bit more help.

Random thought instigated by boredom:
When we've acquired 2 or 3 more talented forwards (draft, trade, FA etc), a guy like Butler (who in my mind isn't a real first liner) could stay on line one to keep a would-be first liner on the second and spread out our talents.

That's what I mean - I've actually been staying optimistic because we have a bright future and that's all I've thinking of. I've been finding it harder and harder to ignore our current situation.

It's frustrating (as an impatient fan who preaches patience) to know that what we need now is time; for development, to find a late round gem etc.

We're as far away from a Cup as we've been since around 1996. You can't tell me that part's not depressing. Make a mental graph of our franchise history and note where we are now...

So the Sens have 12 picks this draft. Add to that the free agent signings of Cannone, DaCosta & Wacey Hamilton -- and that's like 15 picks..

Question, if Ottawa is really keen on Landeskog and with all the picks they have..by taking Sens 6th overall -- could you see them adding EITHER Sens 2nd round pick (36th overall I believe) OR Nashville's 1st to move up to 3rd. Would Florida do that? What else would they have to add to entice Florida to do that?

Can someone kindly hash out details of that conditional pick we got for Campoli?

My understanding is that it won't be the Flames' 2nd or the Thrashers', but the Hawks' and we'll have to wait until they're eliminated or win the cup to know what pick we'll have.

Basically, we got a mid to late 2nd rounder (say 47th-50th)...?

Been wondering this a lot too. We all know how teams covet a top 3 pick. Is Landeskog so superior to a Strome or Couturier to give up another first round prospect?

If I were Tallon (?), I would take OTT & NSH two firsts for the #3, but probably not OTT's 1st & 2nd for the #3. If I were Murray, I'd offer the latter but not the former.

I guess that answers your question, in a shitty kinda way.

I must have been unclear. I know that much, but wanted to confirm that in a way, it's no longer conditional; they will pick their own 2nd rounder to trade because the Hawks are in the playoffs while the Thrashers and Flames not so much.

I wanted the Nucks to lose so I don't have to put up with the fans in the city, but I was wondering if I should be conflicted now because they play the Hawks and we WILL be getting their 2nd round pick.

Logical next question - if Buffalo, NY and CHI all go out first round, does the draft order go by points? Playoff record?

I'm a little dizzy. Someone out there has all the answers.

Does this mean we have to listen to comment after comment about a playoff pool that most of us aren't in, and couldn't give a rats ass about...

hope not.

If BM gives up more then our 1st and 2nd for Flordia pick at number three then he is making a mistake. I think Landeskog is the most NHL ready forward prospect but in the long run I don't see him being that much better of a player like Strome or Couturier. I say we stay at six and draft Strome and maybe try to move up with Nasville's pick depending on who is available. Here is a good highlight video of Strome who I have seen play a lot this year.

Seriously, this is an issue for you? People are going to be talking playoffs no matter what. It's nice to change the topic from time to time to avoid our constant repetition over the draft picks and 2011 ufa class. There's only so much to talk about over the next few months, let's enjoy what little hockey is left.

Who said anything about not talking about the playoffs buddy? I believe that is what Mr.Dorkiewicz would call a straw man argument. There is nothing more annoying or uninteresting than people going on about a hockey pool, when around people who are not in it. Pretty much common sense. How could you even possibly argue that fact?

Put a messageboard in your pool, and leave the rest of us alone, heh.

I think the SENS should stand pat at number 6 and number 21(if Nash gets knocked off by Anaheim) - what they should do is package one or two picks + wiorcioch to Calgary for the 15th pick. Calgary might bite they have no 2nd and 3rd pick this year. At 15 you might snag the Swedish forward.

That's interesting. I read somewhere the Calgary has only ONE pick in the first 100. How can a team end up with only ONE pick in the 1st 3 rounds?

Also another interesting article by the Edmonton blogger on that 'site we don't name' -- says Edmonton's 1st overall pick is in play.
He suggested the return could be looked at (as I read it) Parise, Shea Webber, Brayden Schenn or trade down.

So a player who has never played in the NHL - the 1st pick overall -- with no true superstar in this bunch.. could possibly get traded for a REAL superstar? I don't know what that guy is on.. but Parise or Shea Weber... I really don't think that will happen.

Absolutely! The long-term plans for Corey Locke is to get a game or two every season as "thanks for ripping it up in the A, but yeah you still have no shot in the N".

Pretty simple.

I must have been unclear. I know that much, but wanted to confirm that in a way, it's no longer conditional; they will pick their own 2nd rounder to trade because the Hawks are in the playoffs while the Thrashers and Flames not so much.

I forgot the Chicago pick in my post the other day about "what Sens fans should wish for". But since they finished 8th in the West we still pretty much want two bottom feeders in the East final (to push Chicago's pick a little earlier) and of course want LA vs Phoenix in the West final to ensure Nashville's pick gets a bit better while Chicago's does not get worse.

Basically, it would be fine for Ottawa if Chicago beat Vancouver, but we don't want them to make the conference finals.

Picks go in reverse order of league standings (except for the lottery winner) and except that the four in the conference finals pick last.

From wiki:

The 14 NHL teams not qualifying for the playoffs are entered in the lottery, seeded according to regular season standing. The winning team improves its draft position by up to four places, and no team dropping more than one place. The order in the remaining rounds is unaffected by the lottery and is based on regular season standings.

Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the 30th and last pick, while the runner-up is given the 29th pick. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 28th and 27th picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record. Remaining division winners, then wild card teams are ranked next, filling in the 26th through 15th picks. In both cases, better records result in later picks.

Will the site be assuming the mantle of prime cheerleader for Bingo's playoff run? We need a source of timely updates given that radio or paid webcasts may be our sole options for monitoring our other (only) playoff run...

Also, yes, the conditional Nashville pick is for 2012 not this year's draft

One round is fine (perfect actually) - but getting to the conf. finals makes our first round pick worse and def doesn't make it better. Though it does give us a second rounder in 2012 instead of a third.

Correct - 2012 is the third rounder (if they win one round and Fisher plays) or the second rounder if they win two or more rounds (and fisher plays).

That was funny. He gets up like he's an 80 yr old man. In this case though... they got a goal out of it.
But, if the puck had of went the other way though, he would have been really behind the play. I don't think the coach would have liked it too much.
