Melnyk to Meet with Media at 10:00 AM

(UPDATE 10:07 AM)- Melnyk would not provide comment on the future of Cory Clouston although according to most, that decision has already been made.

(UPDATE 10:01 AM)- Eugene Melnyk indicated that he has not made any decision yet and expects to meet with Murray later today. He also suggested that he would like the next GM to be around for more than just a year, something he also hinted at in last night's interview.

Sens owner Eugene Melnyk is scheduled to meet with the media this morning in Ottawa. The media availability is scheduled for 10:00 AM. There is some uncertainty about what Melnyk has planned for this morning but he did indicate that he would be speaking with Bryan Murray AFTER the morning skate.

Stay tuned for updates.

kind of a strange time for a media conference - game 82 isn't in the books yet. Based on that I suspect it's to announce that Murray will be staying on with organization. I'm not convinced it will be in the roll of GM - I think he will be introduced as Senior Advisor to a new GM (to be named at a later date) - IMO

Eugene was at the game last night - I'm sure they've talked. The more I think about it the more I'm thinking the 10:00am is to announce Tim Murray is the new GM - makes sense - sends a message to players before they head home for off season that there is clear direction and BM will feel good about the move and support it 100%

Time to pass the Torch, from Bryan Murray, to Tim Murray.
Our current GM is not getting any younger, but he will remain as Special Advisor to Tim the New GM.

As far as the Head Coach, I suspect that Cory Clouston
will become an Assistant Coach, to a New Head Coach who has
NHL experience. Candidates might be Kirk Muller, Larry Robinson, Bob Hartley, or another well known NHL ex-coach !

Just a matter of time.

The only thing is Cameron won't be available until June because of the Memorial Cup.

So if Melynk wants Cameron as coach, we have CC until at least mid-June.

It really sounds like Melynk is committed to a rebuild...throu ghout the entire organization, I think Clouston and Murray both find themselves out of their current jobs come this summer. I'm indifferent with what happens to be honest. I think Clouston and Murray have done outstanding jobs since the allstar break, but I do also agree with the notion that this franchise needs a clean slate. This new identity is something I think we've got a glimpse of since the new guys have shown up and I'm a big fan of hard work night in and night out.

Did Butler solidify his spot on the RW next season or what last night? I look forward to a 30 goal season with Butler on Spezza's wing.

I dont think a mention of a better return for Fisher ia a bad thing.

I know Murray also mentioned it prior as well...

As long as it isn't brought up again, like they are patting themselves on the back.

If plan next yr is indeed to sign an FA fwd, the treatment of players wld certainly help to make OTT a more attractive org for a free-agent to sign with.

The Fisher trade and the Phillips re-signing go a long way to reinforce that Ottawa is committed treating their players well (esp. those who have committed and contributed to OTT, both at the arena and outside hockey).

It is also great to hear guys like Anderson (post-game int. ww Friedman last night) and Da Costa refer to the warm welcomes and great treatment they received upon arriving in Ottawa as well.

...After the HATEly fiasco, him wanting out publicly without explanation, a certain amount of reparation is required to re-build the reputation of the SENS org.

I believe these are all small steps in the right direction...

Respect goes a long way in this business. I think a GM's respect for players is a very underrated quality in a team's GM. That Fisher deal builds Murray and the Senators up as a good team to come play for.

Look at it this way: Muckler offered equal contracts to Redden and Chara. Chara left supposedly because he didn't like how Muckler treated Hossa with the sign and trade deal that he made. (Not confirmed, but I read that somewhere)

If players get a mutual respect from the GM and aren't just treated as pawns in a game I feel like it creates a more positive environment that a player would want to sign into.

Just a thought..

I can't think of another explanation to call the "Press Conference" - he needs some major training in dealing with teh media or he just needs to know to shut up.

What Melynk said last night makes sense it sounded like he wants a GM that will be here through the whole rebuild process. Why would you want to start that with 1 GM that might want to retire after next year to then have to finish the process with another GM that might have a different view and outlook on the team. Make way more sense to go through the whole process with 1 GM, who knows if BM would be ready to sign on for 3-4 more years. I think BM has said a few times he is thinking of retiring soon.

I see no problem with the Fisher comment, it kind of says to all the FAs out there, that we'll treat you right if you so the same to us. Can't see that not being a positive for any team.

With fisher the community won, fisher probably helped raise money more than any other player in the same time frame. The charities won and probably encouraged others to cheer for the sens and support them even thought they might not have been hockey fans before. Remember fisher got underwood to help him raise money and they had the auction for a dinner with them. I've never seen a player offer such a personal experience before. It was great for the city.

Its not all about the cup when it comes to helping the city and community out. everyone wins and thats nice to see in this current day and age

And even if we could of gotten a better return for Fisher, THEY STILL OVERPAID.

11 points in 25 games on a playoff bound team is nothing to write home about.

Condra has 11 points in 25 games in OTTAWA.
Greening has 13 points in 23 games in OTTAWA.

While I think we all admired Fisher for his character than his actual play, 2nd line center's #1 quality shouldn't be character, it should be offense. And this is all coming from a Fisher fan who was devastated when he was traded.

I still believe there is already a new GM in place via a verbal agreement, just my hunch. I dont think it will be Tim Murray, cuz it would be the same as having Bryan...old Uncle Bryan would always be in his ear as an "advisor"...

If they go with someone new, it will be a clean slate not a Bryan Murray 2.0.

I know Pierre Mcguire was seen in Kanata not long ago on a non-game night and no TSN broadcasts before or after that day either. Also, since late Feb, PM has not many - if any - Sens games or rarely even sits on the intermission panel for there games; yet Gord Miller (his partner) has done games.... maybe I'm just reading in to things too much, but I have a hunch he is the guy or at least in serious running for it.

I think he'd be good too, he knows hockey, he's in touch with youth and you wouldn't see his shtick that he brings on TV...its just a role he plays

Is there a summary of Melnyk's comments from last night? I was at the game and did not see the interview. Both the Citizen and the Sun had brief articles on the 10am press conference. Did they miss anything else?

cheers

speculation is he may have been into the sauce....

sorry meant to attach...

you can skip ahead to 5:10 to the Melnyk interview if you don't want to watch the entire episode

which really does beg the question "then who"...

[quote name="Johne"]I'd love to see a fan movement started to buy out the Habs and Leafs games next season. Local businesses should get involved as well. Those games need to be 90% sens fans, like last night I forgot if we were in Montreal or in Ottawa.

We need to own our own barn.

To be honest our barn is actually much louder (on the Sens side) during Leafs and Habs games compared to say 2 years ago! It could be the younger fans growing up to actually buy those tickets!

Shit guys. Relax. We have an owner who loves his team and is willing to wait out a rebuild, patiently and financially. He has indicated that he wants a GM and staff to take 2, 3 or 4 yrs to build a winning team. Personally I think this staff has done a great job. Look at the team in Bingo and the new kids on the Sens now. We are already on the way to a solid rebuild. And actually the season is not over yet. We have one more game to play and if Eugene has decided to go outside the organization to hire then he must wait. If he goes outside the org then there is some protocol that has to be followed by not approaching certain GM's/coaches until the playoffs are finished. As far as him being in the sauce. Hell, he can do what he wants in Ott or the Bahamas. I get in the sauce sometimes too. I live in Zihuatanejo so maybe it's the Palm trees, hot weather, and bikinis. We will probably have more news next week and now can wait for the lottery pick on Tues.

I honestly can't see why or how we could bring Murray back as GM next year. People seem to forget that he still is the man that brought us to the ground. He's been here for a few years now and this is basically his team.

He made some terrible signings since his arrival. He signed Richardson out of retirement, then signed Jason Smith. He traded Corvo and Eaves for Commodore and Stillman and both of them ended up signing elsewhere.
We traded Vermette for an injury proned number 1 goalie. We signed Kovalev to a ridiculous contract. Only Montreal were dumb enough to offer as much as us and it was justified by the fact that he had a history there. Not us... We then traded a 2nd pick and Picard for Cullen which ended up not resigning as well. We also had 4 coaches in only 4 years.

Murray also made some good trades in the last months but getting rid of players is much easier than building a successful team.
We can blame it all on bad luck and none of these experiences ended up as successful as planned but at some point, someone needs to be accountable otherwise we'll just be a laughingstock around the league. If the reconstruction plan is really going on, Murray needs to go as well. As for Clouston, it's hard to evaluate when he's had to work with an AHL goalie, a lazy team and unmotivated players.
