-Quick note from Sens practice this morning. Captain Daniel Alfredsson was back on the ice with the team in Tampa Bay.

-Gotta feel for the team down in Bingo. Already without Wiercioch and Hale, they have now lost another defenceman to injury. Eric Gryba left the game on crutches last night and is expected to miss some time. They are already without Craig Schira.

-On the NCAA front, New Hampshire was eliminated last night, meaning Paul Thompson is now officially a free agent. Quick edit here- Thompson has signed with the Pittsburgh penguins according to Elliotte Friedman.Friedman also mentioned this morning that Da Costa is expected to make a decision by Wednesday.

Will provide updates as they become available.

I find comments like this baffling.

Da Costa is 22.

Thompson is 23.

Does their age really matter when they are just starting their careers? I think perhaps we tend to overanalyze this game sometimes.

Relax guy. Obviously I thought their age was more like 20 and 22, since Da Costa is a sophomore and Thompson is a senior. And ya, that would matter.

It's you that's over-analyzing someonelse's comments, and it's baffling. You could have politely pointed it out. Ya, perhaps, I should have done more ANALYZING, and double checked their ages. Sorry man, I was attempting not to over-anylze it I guess.

Da Costa is still the better player.

Too bad, I was hoping for both Thompson and Da Costa haha wishful thinking I know.

If anyone cares, I read an article on the Pens website... sounds like Sid is nearing a return. Anyone else as excited as I am?

I know he's a huge wien-bag, but he's great for hockey.

If he's the better player, that's fine. I personally have nothing to base that on, because I'm not a scout, nor have I ever seen either of these guys play a full hockey game. I'd venture a guess that no one here has seen them play a full game either.

I was only pointing out that age comparison for guys in their early 20's lacks merit, so why take it personally?

I'd bet MTL is one of the other teams, maybe an actual contender is the third. Apparently, language is still something of an issue for Dacosta. C'est chanceux pour les Sénateurs!

Anybody agree with Travis Yost about Patrick Wiercioch today, when he said he couldn't skate and he was "a giraffe on skates"?

Patrick Wiercioch isn't a good skater? Ya right. Very knowledgeable. Is he Michael Grabner out there, no. But if you're comparing everyone to the fastest skater, I guess the majority of the NHL can't skate (yes, I know he never said that). Based on what I've seen, Wiercioch's skating is above average, and his agility (footwork) is exceptional. He looks pretty smooth out there to me, especially for someone with his height (and he'll only get better).

Has Yost finally put in an appearance here or is his participation on senschirp as mythical as that puck moving dman Bryan Murray told us he had acquired on 1st July?

Yea, I was watching him yesterday, and he does seem to be pretty smooth on his skates, another guy i was watching who I haven't looked at too hard was David Hale, he's also a good skater, it seems occasionally he tries to get rid of the puck too quickly, but he's usually very solid.

I agree with yost on this one. Why would we keep wiercioch if we can move up in the draft by packaging him with our NSH first? Or package him to get the rights to some RFA we'd like to sign?

He really didn't seem a likely candidate to get called up. And Tim Murray didn't look too excited while answering questions about him. Pretty fishy move by the Senators.

I don't think he has a problem with skating, just a bit of an issue with growing into his body. and learning to play the man a bit more. A Wiercioch-Cowen Line would look amazing a few years from now though, so I won't be surprised if we hold on to him til Kuba/Gonchar are off contract.

Certainly don't disagree with that point. It's actually kind of obvious that they might put Wiercioch's name out there to see what the interest is. Go for it.

It's the skating comments that struck me as pretty ignorant. Perhaps it's time to update those scouting reports on young Mr. Wiercioch. Same thing with those that say Erik Condra can't skate... watch the games.

The draft should be really interesting. I wonder what Murray will do with all the picks he has.

Sens need scoring talent. Do you think Murray could trade a pick or two to a team to try to get a prospect that is having trouble getting into the NHL lineup due to no space? I'm thinking about Cody Hodgson.

His back injury has been fixed and he is still a great young player.

Any thoughts guys?

Where did you hear that language is an issue? I just googled it and in 20 seconds found an article saying language isn't an issue because he speaks four of them.

Since before he was a free agent, it was apparently Philly and Ottawa, now some people suggested Boston's entered the mix.

I certainly hope so.

Are there any other UFA - NCAA players out there that would fit well for the Sens?

Also, Ben Blood, Louie Caporusso & Jeff Costello are all playing in the frozen final four in April.

This may sound odd but if I where Da Costa. I think Ottawa would be a much better choice than going to boston/montreal or any other team that has been named, that are interseted in him. I think this mainly because
a) although several of you(above) clearly proved language isn't a barrier for him, but hey if English was my second language and saw an opportunity to speak french and english would come to ottawa too.
b) if he wants solid ice time. we have tons of room here. we will probably give him top 6 forward ice time (not saying we will from day one, its possible) but other teams such as boston are way too deep (look at seguin, he is getting roughly 9-14mins a game, i know that will change in a few years) so if da costa there he would barely get 4th line ice time.

I would have taken Butler over Shannon to play for team USA. Shannon has 10 goals in 73 games and Butler has 7 in 30 all of which came in the past couple months. Shannon may have speed and experience on Butler but Butler is still growing into the NHL and World Championship experience would do wonders for him. I honestly think he would fare much better on the score sheet even at this point than Shannon.

With a larger ice surface at the Worlds, Shannon brings much more to the table. Butler has cooled down some and is a defensive liability is some eyes so maybe that was all factored in too. Butler does not play the PK either (good thing). Having said that, maybe he still will get an invite.
